it's a computer and it is a tool for education, having fun, and making the world a better place. why would you name something that is not living?

Same reason you use a psuedonym for your online persona....unless your name really is Five D. Foot-Long...

I haven't named any of my Apple computers.

But I heard someone who worked in a Mac lab at the university I attended for graduate school call one of the 24" iMacs "The Big Mac Daddy." I thought it was funny.

@Shambo I worked my ass off to get my 13" uMBP. But I just find the naming of things that dont live ridiculous. Like when people name cars I dont get it, I just think its an idiotic and stupid practice.
I just feel that when almost EVERY post you make mentions your "BadBoy," it gets extremely annoying, and the fact that you have to brag about it everywhere. I mean I am really happy with the investment I made into my MBP but I dont obsess over it on every post. I actually try to help people and just say "My BadBoy Pro is perfect I have no issues" or "My BadBoy Pro is future-proofed" which is impossible because in 6 months there will be a better MBP and I don't care if yours is matte or not.

The reason my username is prodigee is that at camp when I was younger I was called prodigy by the counselors because I was so good at baseball, the reason it changed to prodigee is that on many sites and on game usernames prodigy is taken so I changed it to prodigy, does that make sense? I hope so now I have explained myself.

Ok my rant is finished.

Because young teens have nothing better to do but name inanimate objects.
No kidding.

It's threads like these that forced me to hide my laptop under a Speck case in order to disassociate myself from the looney mac fringe here.

I'm a closet mac user and will never come out lest these people find me.

to make it easier what's is what on the network. yes, i name every computers and iphones in my family.

iPod video 30GB = scratchy ass (due to lots of scratch on the back, used to be "black ass").
iPhone 3gS white = whiter
Macbook pro 17" unibody = The Beast
Macbook Air rev B/SSD = The Air
Macmini = Media Center
sister's Lenovo = Lenovo

For network identification:

MacBook Pro - Silvester J. Pussycat
Desktop - Wile E. Coyote
Desktop 2 - Road Runner

I don't give mine nicknames either, rather, I give them names to help identify them on my network like the other users here.

MBP - Helios
Mac Mini - Virtue
PC 1 - Pandora
PC 2 - Princess
Laptop - Lappy

Guess which two my wife uses ;)

I've also been using "Pandora" on my network far longer than that music service has been around.

People name their cars all the time. It isn't motivated by some wild belief that their car is alive. People like to finalize ownership on things that are valuable. It's not a whole lot diffrent than the saxon folk concept of deadnaming. And the MBPs cost more than some people's cars!

Really, I'm less worried about the crazy mac fringe and the habits of the modern teenager than I am about this stark, absolute terror response people seem to have to anything they think is a little bit out of the ordinary.

Well said. It's also shocking how they want to force their opinions onto you and bully you into following their belief.

I name mine because it makes networking a lot easier, I also name all my Hard Drives/Partitions, again for ease of finding stuff.

I name one computer Stewie, and that has hard drive partitions - Brian, Lois, Chris, Peter.. no love for Meg ;)

Another is named Bender, and hard drive partitions Leela, Fry..

.. you get the idea!

NO.

The only computer that I have ever known to have a nickname was my buddy's old toshiba back in college. It was really slow and awful so we made a joke about it. We called it "Socrates" since it spent all day thinking :D

No name for the Mac Pro but I call my Macbook Air 'Penis' because when I whip it out the girls love it.

You people don't date much do you?

Those 3 made me laugh

It's like you typed out what I had in my head all this time.

Sorta like you telling people that if they don't have the matte option then they couldn't afford anything else? Really? Hypocrisy? Surely not...

Using my awesome powers of creativity I call my current MacBook Pro: MBP :D

Given this thread perhaps I'll think something else up.

\People like to finalize ownership on things that are valuable.
That's why normal folk speak in terms of, "My macbook", "My car", "My Toaster". Try it... people will understand that it's yours.

Really, I'm less worried about the crazy mac fringe and the habits of the modern teenager than I am about this stark, absolute terror response people seem to have to anything they think is a little bit out of the ordinary.
It's one thing to "name" your devices - no big deal. But do you people realize you're actually talking about them now? With feelings?

Mrs. "Richard1028" is a psychologist. She would have a field day with this thread.

Sorry, but you're all looney. :D

My machines all have distinct hostnames, as is normal for any computer, especially those on a network.

However I don't refer to them as their names generally, as they are inanimate objects, not people or pets.

Only a 12 year old does stuff like that.

Well i was doing a video shoot and my laptop was in the scene and she refereed to it as little-silvy. So now its name is silvy.
