Yes, have had had Wi-Fi since March 2007.

Now I run a DGL-4500 which prioritizes traffic for all internet and provides hard wired connections for the XBox 360 and iMac. The 4500 provides Wi-Fi for the PS3 and iPhone. Hooked up to the 4500 is an AirPort Extreme which is configured wireless 'n' only for the two MacBooks, and with a Belkin USB hub, provides wireless printing for computers on either network as well as wireless back up to 320 GB drive.

All of that running off of this connection:

Must have gone wireless in 2003. Before that it was a 20m ethernet cable that ran one length of the apartment to the other :) Sitting on the balcony in the sunshine, drinking a beer and surfing away seemed incredibly cool at the time.

I hope the new title of the thread is better.

Cool, I guess I shouldn't really assume everyone has wireless! Should be interesting, and it was a suggestion btw not a command:p

Channels 1, 6, and 11 are spammed to death around here.

I'm thinking about moving my phones to 5.8 GHz to help alleviate the problem as well.

Yep, same. I think 5.8ghz anything is illegal here (except processor speed:p) , although we do get up to channel 14 on the wireless. I guess those channels must be the manufacturer's defaults?

I think I moved to wireless in 2001, before that I had wired networks. I've had cable internet since 1999, dial-up for ages before that.

We had wireless in our old house since December 2007, but then we moved, so in our new house, our wireless network has been up and running since August 2008. I use Wi-Fi for my MacBook, iPod Touch, Wii and 2 NDS's.

Our router is an AirPort Extreme Base Station and yes, it's password protected, MAC restricted etc. If it wasn't for that, everyone would be using our connection since the network stretches to half of the street!

I've had it since 2004.

Started with a Belkin wireless extender with my old Netgear router, then had a Linksys WRT54G and I've now got an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

I've used password protection since day 1.

Yes. I got it three years ago (Linksys router). That died in June, and I got an AEBS. I use WAP2, with a 63 character password, and MAC address filtering. I know, I'm paranoid. Now imagine how long it took me to enter the passkey on my iPhone:eek:

Don

i think we got wireless internet when we made the switch from dial-up back in 03 i think? we got the verizon DSL and a linksys wireless router. i'm on my third router now, so i guess 2 years isnt that bad for the lifetime.

2003 - D-link G router.

Now AEBS with AExpress throughout three stories. World without Wi-fi? Can't imagine it...

I was actually wireless networking (it was admittedly terrible, and only for an awkward area to cable) before 802.11b using one of the proprietary systems around before b took off. 1998, something like that?

Yes but I don't like it. We can't have a wired network here, not without a massive upheaval, so we have a wifi router in the middle of the house but it's fairly big. So my computers in the corner of one part of the house gets a terrible signal. It's so bad I can't even get my DS to connect from up here

Good part is that we don't need security on it since the signal cuts off as soon as it hits the outer brick wall. And this (supposedly) is a far reaching router!

Yes, I have wireless at my house. Have had for a long time; I can't remember when I first set it up, had to be about 5 years ago. I use a Time Capsule now. I have 4 laptops actively using it now.

Mine is unsecured, mainly cause I didn't want to mess with security, and there are no houses close enough to me to connect.

I seem to remember a specific mod having issues with wireless.

I got WiFi in my house about 3 years ago.
We only had one desktop computer in the house, so that always used Ethernet.
Once a Gateway laptop came in, I needed to get WiFi going in my house.
So, it's been wonderful. It's great not to be glued in one spot hooked onto Ethernet.

On my network connected is the desktop, the Gateway laptop, my MacBook Air, 2 iPhones, and a Wii.

I've had wireless since 2001 when I bought an Airport along with my Titanium Powerbook. I slowly added two Airport Expresses to my network, and then swapped out the Airport for a Time Capsule so I could upgrade the network to 802.11g. The Airport is still working, AFAIK, for a friend of mine.

I had the second wireless network at my apartment complex, the other was also an Airport-based network running on the first Apple Airport; I had the second "Snow" version.

Yep - since 2001.

When we got our first Mac (a Summer '01 'bubble' iMac G3 running OS X 10.0.3), I set it up to share our dial-up connection over its built-in 802.11b AirPort. We had an ad-hoc WLAN between the G3, a PC and a cranky Dell Inspiron laptop whose hinges had a tooth-loosening screech from the day it was unpacked. Back then, WEP encryption was the only game in town - but even then it was known to be insecure. I had the iMac run a script every week that'd auto-generate a new WEP key, print it out, and set the network to use the new key.

I put together a little web site running on the iMac with some buttons to hang up and dial the modem. Quite nifty, for the time. That was for the folks to use whilst I was at university where we had our stunning 512Kbit cable broadband - shared between 8 people. And we thought it was fast :)

Nowadays, I've got two AirPort Expresses (802.11b/g only - none of my Macs have N) running in WDS. We switched from cable to ADSL2+ last year - the cable line was technically 20Mbit/sec, but the provider was so oversubscribed I was lucky to get 5Mbit. At least on ADSL2+ I get the full 10Mbit that my line's capable of.

I'll be moving soon. I'll need to decide if I'm going to save for a new unibody MBP. If not, I'll buy an Airport card with 802.11n and fit it into my current (old) 2006 MacBook Pro.

I got WiFi right before I moved away to college. We had only had desktops at home before that, and WiFi was a great idea. It made things more convenient since I had bought a laptop for college.

ive had it since early 2006 right after we got broadband..
started with a linksys wrt54g..it crapped out so we got a belkin N router.. but it didnt work that great with my Macbook so we got another wrt54g and it works fine..
but im looking to get a time machine so i guess ill be using an apple router..are time machines decent routers in a pc/mac house?

We got Zen wireless in 2007 and were originally intending to use with the 360 and then realised that:

A) The wireless adaptor for the 360 costs a fortune (I was originally due a cheap one from a friend!)
B) The router would be best placed in the same room as the 360

It doesn't matter though because, although the 360 and husband's Windows PC are wired, my iMac and MB are merrily wireless which is handy, as the iMac is upstairs so wires would've been a pain. It's proved pretty useful for the iPhone too.

Recently got an AirPort Extreme for our 3 computers plus HDD. To paraphrase Kraftwerk, "It's fun to compute in bed".

I had wireless internet in 1999 when I bought my first clamshell iBook. Admittedly, it was still dial-up but not being tethered by a cable was a revelation at the time. The novelty of sending emails on the toilet using a computer that looked like a toilet seat took a long time to wear off.
