Not switching any electrical device off at night that isn't essential is irresponsible and wasteful in todays world!

While a solitary computer sipping power at night is personally very minor, collectively if all computer users globally share the same mindset it's a different story.

Just switch it off!
I somewhat subscribe to what you're saying there.
When I go to sleep, everything in the house goes off. Even my routers (this is best for my kid also, because when it's time for sleep, there is no Internet access anywhere - he doesn't have a phone, so we speak of his desktop computer). I have hardware switches on all the plugs in the wall basically, so even the electronics with no Off button (like the TV), will be turned off. Many of them are time programmable, so I don't have to go and click the entire house. Usually around 23:00 everything goes off.

Ontopic: no, I don't keep it on.

Think harder then. You know we’re in a Mac forum here right? The average user can’t open most Apple computers. The 27“ iMacs were in part glued shut, as are the 24” iMacs.
Ok I’ll think reeeeally hard. You know you‘re in a thread posting about not cleaning your Mac mini’s and making the dirt somebody else’s problem right? How do you figure you’re an “average Mac user” or human being if operating a screwdriver is beyond you? Holding a vacuum cleaner up along the air intake holes under and behind an iMac once in a while requires above average intelligence?

Whew, that was exhausting, I do believe I’m gettin the vapors…

Try harder next time. If you don’t want harsh responses avoid insulting people like in your original post in this thread. How do you figure the average poster here doesn’t clean their houses? Your supposedly snippy retort falls flat as using a standard home vacuum cleaner to clean PCs is generally not recommended. Vacuum cleaners can produce static charges that can kill electronics.

Your reading comprehension seems equally lacking as I provided a source for my argument that the majority of users can’t open their Apple Macs. A screwdriver isn’t enough to open most of the recent Macs (Desktop and Laptop) as they’re glued shut.

I shut down the Mini (and the MacBook Pro) every night.
Going further than that, I then turn off the power strip to which the Mini is attached, removing it from "the mains" altogether.

In the morning, turn on the power strip, then press the Mini's power-on button.

How difficult is that?

I still usually shut down my machines when I'm not using them out of habit, startup time for the M series Macs is barely a few seconds anyway.

But I don't feel bad about leaving them on overnight sometimes like I would with a desktop gaming PC.

I don't think it really matters whether someone decides to leave it on overnight or turn them off completely. The Mac Mini is not like an XBOX Series X or Playstation 5 where they draw insane amounts of power even if they are in suspend mode.

You overvalue your opinions. You’re talking about dumping your filthy junk on buyers here, and you’ve reduced your defense to nonsense trying to weasel out of it.

My Mini draws around 0.6W when sleeping, 2.9W idling. My fridge consumes more energy by orders of magnitude. I would assume my electric kettle consumes more energy if I make two cups of tea per hour.

I do the same, also to be on the safe side from failing power adapters possible causing fire hazards …

Quite frankly that's a stupid way to view energy consumption/conservation!

It's about making as many small, almost insignificant changes to the way we consume that adds up to a massive difference globally. The 5 Watts of power your computer needlessly consumes every single night while you sleep is justified by the fact you fridge and kettle uses up more energy in your world of one.

I don't understand anyones reluctance to make a difference but first world problems. "The power switch is such a stretch and so hard to reach. And those extra 10 seconds waiting for my machine to boot is killing me...."

100% Agree.

My partner fried my Mac Pro some 10 years ago by vacuuming around it and then running the vacuum over the rear…

Yeah. I was not happy.

No chance of anyone bringing a vacuum cleaner near any Mac of mine.

To be honest, you don't know me, I don't know you, so why so harsh? What if the energy to drive my appliances at night comes from a battery that is charged during the day by solar panels?

No harm done :) have a nice day

I think the only people who turn computers off at night are those who don't know how to use them, those who are like 50+ years old now, or those who live in high-storm/surge areas.

EDIT: The 50+ comment refers to people who are used to having power hungry beasts. With most modern Macs, that's really not an issue.

I will say I just dusted out my Mac Mini after about 5 years of constant on and well let's just say I should have dusted it out sooner based on the giant cloud of dust that came out the rear end

Oh geez, give me a break....why did I know there would be someone to tell us how irresponsible and stupid we all are.

I leave my computers on 24/7......several computers as a matter of fact.
I also leave my refrigerators (yes 2 of them) on all night along with air conditioning or heat for the house and security lights for my safety. I also heat and cool my workshop 24/7......My choice and my privilege.
How shameful......

I pay for it out of the money I socked away working for 38-years and now retired......it's a luxury I earned and will continue no matter how many of YOU people try to preach to us how sinful we all are.
What a joke.....

Not switching off entire power to the house at night is irresponsible. Turn off that gas furnace at nights too. Hope you are responsible. I would go further, you should turn on the power to entire house only when needed.

Every couple years any actively cooled device should pop up a message that says ‘hey, check my fans’

I normally turn my M1 Mac Mini off after I’m finished with it -- whether that’s at night before bed or sometime before then.

It starts up quickly so it’s not really annoying to start it up each day that I use it.

NO....you were and are out of line, period.
Stop preaching to people and take care of your own little world.

We're not the one's calling people stupid and irresponsible....
I would be ok if the person preaching lived in a cave or in the jungle with no electricity or drawing no power at night.
