I'm just arguing that a phablet isn't something that you throw in your pocket without thinking, like some apologists are trying to demonstrate.
Yes, a Note 2 for example won't fit any pocket. But it's not quite as big as most think either. Like I said it slips nicely into the breast pockets of my jacket, and those aren't particularly big. It fits in all my pant pockets as well though that does become uncomfortable after a while, and I don't want my pants to stretch in the wrong places.

It's a trade off, as you said.
But I can't just live with a phone that big every day.
Most of the time I have no problem, but there are days when I just go "jeans and tshirt" and a phablet could be a problem.
Indeed, this is when it really becomes a tradeoff. On a hot summer's day, I need either a simple textile bag or a jacket with buttoned or zipped pockets that I can sling over my shoulder or something. Of course many don't want to have to bring anything like that along. For me personally it's worth it because of all I do with that phone, and I tend to always have a simple bag, jacket or backpack with me anyway.

The one hand operation is another issue for me, there are tons of occasions when I'm quite busy and I need to take the phone from my pocket, unlock it, do something like a call or message, with a single hand.
I tried with a Note 3, a Lumia 1320 and an Lg and I can't do something like that with one hand for sure.
And I'm an absolutely normal guy, with average hands and toes.
Here I am with you completely. I am actually very disappointed that Samsung (or anyone else for that matter) have really come up with any truly useful solutions here. The Note is still useful enough to me that I don't mind using it with two hands 75% of the time (one handed is quite possible for somet things), but one handed use could be made to work.

For most of these worries though, I think Apple will have the best solutions so far, if they do go for a 5.5" phone. They won't release it without a very smart one handed solution, that I am confident about. This might be based on sensors on the chassis telling the phone to which side to direct the controls or something like that. Probably it will also sync very well with the iWatch, so that you don't have to take the phone out of the pocket to answer calls when you're already wearing earphones or just to check notifications. And, they will probably make the thinnest and most pocketable 5.5" phone yet.

So - all the more reason for iPhone enthusiasts in general to not cry their eyes out because Apple is going big. ;) Many of those who whine today will embrace the larger iPhone when it finally arrives. And the rest can happily continue using their 4" iPhones, because no way in hell is Apple going to abandon that form factor.

Indeed and for many of us a device the size of a Note is impractical. I carry my phone in the front pocket of jeans and trousers I wear, so a huge mobile phone would just be uncomfortable and look silly IMO. I demo'd this with a friends Note 3 a while back and it literally looked like I had a roofing tile on my thigh. If Apple produce two phones in differing sizes, the smaller option will win every time for me and I would bet my life savings on the smaller being the bigger seller of the two in the long run. It will be nice to have a choice for those who like huge phones though :)

I used a lot of different smartphones the last three years. iPhone 4/4S, Samsung Galaxy S2 & S3, HTC One X, iPhone 5...

To be honest, I think 4" is large enough, 4,7" might be a bit too big (except, with a very thin bezel, so the overall size would not increase too much).

I preferred the 4,3" of the S2 the most.

I think that the smaller will be the 4.7" device and with a physical button for TouchId it will basically be like a 5" device, a little bit too big for me ...

I can't imagine myself not buying the next iPhone, but if rumors about dimensions and increased price are true, I would jump the ship ....
Especially the price: I'm not going to pay more than the 729€ I paid for my iPhone 5S.
Do you realize ? 729€ is something like 1000$ !!! I paid 1000$ for a smartphone and I'm not going to pay more than that!!!

I post this again .... and again ... And again ...
If you can't see how ridiculous this is, you are in denial

This IS NOT what pocketable means in my world.
Those are not miniature pants or shirts, nor little men.

I must be in denial. Are the pics pointing out you can tell there is a phone in people's pockets?

If that's the case I guess I don't care. If someone is that petty to judge something like that it's not likely a person I care what they think (I'm assuming it would be a high schooler, or shallow adult?).

I'll probably go for the sweetspot 4.7"
As already mentioned in this thread, I wonder how many months we'll have to tolerate apps which don't fit the screen? That will be awful :-(
There are still plenty of apps which aren't updated to iOS7 aesthetics, these changes don't happen overnight.

That's a price I'd be willing to pay as crappy as it would be.

I couldn't care less about other's judgment ... The pictures are pointing out that a 5+" device is extremely uncomfortable in a pocket ...

I actually think my 4S' 3.5" is perfect... It's weird when I use my dad's 5S.

Is that the new iPhone in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?

I actually think my 4S' 3.5" is perfect... It's weird when I use my dad's 5S.

I also think the 3.5 inch screen is the perfect size for one-handed control and operation. In addition to the 4.7 and 5.5 inch iPhones with reduced bezels, Apple should sell a 3.5 inch size. Steve Jobs and Apple researchers found that the 3.5 inch screen size is the perfect size for one-handed operation with your thumb. I agree with their findings, and thumbs haven't gotten any bigger. I found the 4 inch iPhone 5 to be a bit too unweidly for easy one-handed control. And I had to constantly adjust my grip on the phone in order for my thumb to touch the opposite corner of the 4 inch screen. The 3.5 inch screen is really the perfect size.

In addition, I liked the rounded edges of the iPhone 2G/3G/3GS more than the boxiness of the current iPhones because the phones fit better in the hand. I am glad some rumors include rounded edges for the iPhone 6.

Mangomind, Thank you for your comments. I agree 100%. I have longer thumbs and digits, so I would vote to stay with the iPhone 5 configuration. Extending the useable screen to the bezel would be great as well as incorporating the home button into the screen so as to not loose horizontal width.

I have had every iPhone from the original to the current 5s. I have a 5s for work and 5 for personal use. I have never owned an android phone but the bigger screen has a big appeal. I picked up a Galaxy S5, really because I wanted the gear fit, last week. The screen is great, the phone is light but a bit tough for me to operate on handed. The battery stinks and charging times are so long, especially via USB.

Still deciding if I want to keep it. The only reason is the screen. It is much better in my opinion and when the eyes start to go, it makes it easier to read.

But, once the iPhone 6 comes out with the assumed bigger screen size, I would be back to the iPhone.

The funny thing is I am trying to make the S5 look and feel like the iPhone. But, no matter how much I try, it is still not any iPhone.

a 4" iphone feels really weird in my hand. it's like holding a banana. horrible proportions for a phone.

What exactly are you going to jump ship to? Low-end iPhone or low-end Android? The iPhones are the only high-end phones under 4.7" right now.

4 inches is a large as I want to go with a phone. Now for a mini-tablet that I don't carry in my hand or pocket, sure, I'd go larger. But in that case it doesn't need to be a phone.

Also, as a developer, if I have to start supporting a third iPhone resolution I'm going to cry.

iPhone 6 4.7" rumor is everywhere. I prefer 4.0" screen because it's convenient, I don't carry a bag so 4.0" is easier for me. Maybe women like big size since they usually carrying a bag?

I am curious this Tim Cook just planning to do change screen thing in his whole CEO period?

What makes you think 4.7" will require a bag? I see people carry Galaxy notes in their pocket....

A bigger screen doesn't necessarily mean a bigger iPhone.

If only DAT bezel could be eliminated!

Do you like a 4.7" screen iphone or current 4.0" screen?

I've used the very first iPhone, in fact I have it stored in its original box, all the way up to my current 5s. I've also used android for a stint with the Razr Maxx, Galaxy S3, S4, and S5. I liked the customizability of android and the apps were fine but not as robust or refined as iOS apps due mostly to the fact that there are more developers for iOS, hence more options and arguably better quality because of a much bigger customer base. I liked android but kept coming back to iOS because it was easier to use and the apps seemed better. Look at the current Starbucks app on both platforms. What kept drawing me to android was the bigger screen size. It was nice when watching movies while traveling and also consuming data via Facebook, Pulse, Whatsapp, tapatalk, etc. The problem was when sitting on a chair at home it was great; however once you're on the move walking or driving (don't do this) it was harder to interact with the phone single handed. Even just to send a short text message or check the calendar. That being said the Motorola X is a perfect size with a 4.7" screen. It was not much bigger than a 5s, but I wanted to stay on iOS. If Apple could use a virtual home button with Touch ID, they could easily make next iPhone about the same dimensions on the Motorola X. If this happens then watch out android!
