Yes, a Note 2 for example won't fit any pocket. But it's not quite as big as most think either. Like I said it slips nicely into the breast pockets of my jacket, and those aren't particularly big. It fits in all my pant pockets as well though that does become uncomfortable after a while, and I don't want my pants to stretch in the wrong places.I'm just arguing that a phablet isn't something that you throw in your pocket without thinking, like some apologists are trying to demonstrate.
Indeed, this is when it really becomes a tradeoff. On a hot summer's day, I need either a simple textile bag or a jacket with buttoned or zipped pockets that I can sling over my shoulder or something. Of course many don't want to have to bring anything like that along. For me personally it's worth it because of all I do with that phone, and I tend to always have a simple bag, jacket or backpack with me anyway. It's a trade off, as you said.
But I can't just live with a phone that big every day.
Most of the time I have no problem, but there are days when I just go "jeans and tshirt" and a phablet could be a problem.
Here I am with you completely. I am actually very disappointed that Samsung (or anyone else for that matter) have really come up with any truly useful solutions here. The Note is still useful enough to me that I don't mind using it with two hands 75% of the time (one handed is quite possible for somet things), but one handed use could be made to work. The one hand operation is another issue for me, there are tons of occasions when I'm quite busy and I need to take the phone from my pocket, unlock it, do something like a call or message, with a single hand.
I tried with a Note 3, a Lumia 1320 and an Lg and I can't do something like that with one hand for sure.
And I'm an absolutely normal guy, with average hands and toes.
For most of these worries though, I think Apple will have the best solutions so far, if they do go for a 5.5" phone. They won't release it without a very smart one handed solution, that I am confident about. This might be based on sensors on the chassis telling the phone to which side to direct the controls or something like that. Probably it will also sync very well with the iWatch, so that you don't have to take the phone out of the pocket to answer calls when you're already wearing earphones or just to check notifications. And, they will probably make the thinnest and most pocketable 5.5" phone yet.
So - all the more reason for iPhone enthusiasts in general to not cry their eyes out because Apple is going big.
