I'm jailbroken and use swipe gestures for a lot of the functions I'd normally use with the home button. However, I wouldn't mind if apple shrunk/redesigned the home button to give more space for a larger screen.

It's way cooler to have an ALL TOUCH device. If the five finger pinch replaces the home button, I'd be completely happy. That just means we are on step closer to having a GUI like in Stark's lab in Iron Man. Boom.

I like the home button in that it gives the device some "weight" and balances out the speaker / camera on top. I would be very surprised to see Apple losing it in the next iteration of iphones/ipads.

The speaker is on the bottom....unless you mean the earpiece?

I dont know. I love my homebutton it's so small but so useful, your iPhone would be useless without it unless there is other gestures. I came from a blackbery tour and already with one button on the front it was hard to adjust so I don't know what I would do without it.

I don't know about you, but I can't get 5 fingers on my iPhone screen at the same time. Seems kind of crazy.

It is terrific, and it is a terrific design.

No reason to change something like this just because it has become familiar ('stale'). That's a good argument to keep it. I'm not sure how they'd replace it with gestures, but I guess if any company could pull something like this off it would be Apple. I'm skeptical of that rumor.

I'm 6'5" with big hands and I can make a five finger pinch just fine.

Leave it. I think it would feel a bit unnatural without a home button.

But the same could be said about buying a phone without buttons, like we did when buying our first touch screen.

What happens if that portion of the touchscreen dies?

Samething when the home button dies. I theorize that apple is looking to axe the home button because people use the "home button death" to exchange a water damaged phone.

I'd still find a touchscreen home button incredibly annoying.

I think it's pretty convenient...especially when you aren't looking at the screen and just need to get to the home section quickly.

How about replace thumb-sized home button with the entire bottom part under the screen as a big home button.

Benefits: looks nicer, easier to press
Downsides: easier to press by accident? I never put my thumbs there anyway while playing games/watching videos, always on the silver bezel part. Some might though.

Just threw in a bigger screen for kicks cause I figured it was more do-able with the larger home button, but I don't think it's very likely anyway. Ignore if you like. The seams would be less visible on the real thing, I just took the standard dark grey MSPaint preset color.

It's not a perfect idea but I think it would make the iPhone much nicer to look at.

I prefer the mechanical button vs gestures or the ps3/360 style. I'd accidentally hit it all the time if it were momentary vs an actual push button. I do however hope they eventually put a motorola/rim style led indicator light on it. Or, let the screen show with a blink etc if you have missed a call or text. I was hoping they would come out with an app that would allow it to blink the screen for you periodically if you set it to notify you of a missed call or text.

Most can, but you'd have to have your other hand free to hold the phone vs grabbing in and one handing it while you have the other hand to still do whatever with.

There should be an LED under the speaker grill that illuminates... like a wii perhaps?

Yeah to me that's the biggest downside. I have no problem with the home button, perhaps it would be better to throw i away on the iPad, which is really rarely used without two hands anyways.

Using an Android device as my temp phone right now, I honestly do not like that touch sensor button and don't think I'd enjoy it as the iPhone's home button. I really like the physical button. And while I really like the idea of the iPad article posted the other day (remove home button and 5 finger pinch as "home button", I don't think it would serve well on the iPhone. It would look amazing with a flawless and button-less front, though.

I dislike the touch sensor "hard" buttons on the Android I have mostly because there is four of them in a row and since they're not always lit and can be confusing at times (granted I don't use the phone much so I guess a normal user learns where they are).

I really like having a home button on the iPhone. Whether it is a mechanical button or a touch sensor I'm not sure I care either way so long as there is a dedicated button and I don't have to use some awkward gesture.

Not sure the screen needs to get too much larger though. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Fascinate and it feels too big in my hand. I like the size of the iPhone's screen - it just feels "right" in my hand (thats what she said!)

As for the home button idea you suggest, it would seem as if it might be easy to hit it accidentally.

A poster earlier in the thread suggested an LED be placed under the home button, and I like that idea a lot. It could pulse/flash/whatever different colors for different notifications.
