Do you lock your front door while you're in?
No, never... no point really, area I live is the country... at uni I have no say in the matter, it locks regardless... oh the amount of times I have locked myself out while drunk :(

I live in a small condo complex, quite safe. I generally don't lock my door during the day when I'm home.

I must say, however, reading this thread has made me reconsider this practice. I believe this is still a safe community - but better safe than sorry

Used to here in Texas we would leave our backdoors open. All of our friends did it and so did we. If a friend needed something they could simply call and then walk in and get it.

Now with crime and hate to say it but a certain hurricane that hit Louisiana and moved people here we always lock our doors even when we are home. I even unlock it, let the dogs out, let them in and lock it right back.

I can't even understand how you feel safe living in a house without fences around it, but maybe that's because where I live things work a different way. I live in a fifth floor apartment, and always lock my doors (have two)...

Is wary of the implications of posting in these 'do you lock *' threads. Some of us have the username as an internet identity.

After saying that, my doors lock themselves when they close.

I always lock my doors. There is always a weapon within reach in any room, call me paranoid, but if you are crazy enough to walk in my home, you are crazy enough to hurt me or my family.

I always lock the door, but not for reasons of safety. I live in a 25 storey apartment complex, I think a much more likely intrusion would be someone absent-mindedly (or drunkenly) getting off on the wrong floor and attempting to enter what they think is their unit.

I've never grew up in a house that never left their doors unlocked. I live in the Beach Cities, a somewhat affluent part of LA County. There hasn't been much crime here, if at all. I lock my doors. I have an alarm system with a vibration sensor on the windows. Fake cameras, but I do have motion sensors that let me know if someone or something passes by or is at my front door. Hearing that in the middle of the night usually scares me but it's always been a cat. And the cats (I hope) keep setting off the vibration sensors.

So, yes. I lock my door. In, out, all the time.

My front door is bulletproof but it's not your usual front door (bullet proof aside), houses here don't have fences or a big lawn in front, it's usually the garage in front and walls end to end instead of fences, so you have a wall all around your lot, some houses use those walls as well for the structure of the house (ours doesn't because it's not concrete but 100% hard wood so you need space to give it maintenance), and if they have a lawn it's usually in the back, or to the side if they have a wide lot.

Most of the houses in small or really narrow lots have a garage door facing the street, with the garage door having the main door.

So we have two front doors actually, the one in the street, and the one that goes from the garage to the actual house, the one in the actual house is usually locked, but if someone were already there it means they jumped over the street facing wall onto the roof of the garage and down into the garage, or someone left a garage door opened.

I keep my doors and windows locked at all times plus the house alarm is on at all times when I am home. For me, I do not care if I am home or out the doors and windows are locked and the house alarm is ON at all times.

Most doors in this country have locks that will automatically lock the door when they shut. That said, my parents (and most people I know around home) leave their keys in the front door during the day/evening. They live in small hamlets/villages in the country though.

I wouldn't in my flat in London though.

I grew up in the country in a small village. Had to walk across a field to get to the nearest neighbour! When it was warm we would leave the front door wide open, people could just call out "hello" when they arrived. Some neighbours didn't even lock their door when they went out if it was only for the day.

Now I live in London and I wouldn't do that. I'd leave the door unlocked (but not open) but for the latch being temperamental so best not to fiddle with it!

Yes, always. I also always keep a loaded gun in a drawer close to the door. I've shot through the door twice before, because I thought there were robbers in front of it, but it turned out that it was the mailman and a neighbor, so yeah. Better safe than sorry!

Besides locking my doors while I'm home, I keep my alarm set to "stay". I also keep a loaded 12ga shotgun under my bed just in case. I read about home invasions happening more and more, gets me a little nervous..

When I'm home, I keep the doors locked...if only to make it harder for the kids to escape. :D

At night, doors are locked and my alarm is on. I'm in the camp that it's better to be safe than sorry.
