I live in a fairly busy house in a very nice neighbourhood so it's usually unlocked, but I always lock it when I'm alone. For the light hearted reason of not wanting people to sneak up on me when I've got the surround sound turned up to max, and the more serious reason of being robbed.

My parents were out one evening and I happened to be upstairs playing the Xbox online talking to some friends over the microphone. Had a phone call from my mum telling me they would be home within the next 5 minutes. I heard the door open and my natural thought process was, it's only the parents. I'll walk downstairs and greet them.

Turns out it was a man in his late 40s at the bottom of my stairs asking to sit in my living room after he had just escaped from a mental hospital.

Cutting the story short, I kicked him out swiftly and nicely as possible, locked the door, grabbed a cricket bat and rang my parents. Turns out my father used to be friends with the psychotic-drug taking-mental hospital escapee.

Now I always lock the door, whether I'm expecting visitors in an hour or two or in 5 minutes. Better to be safe than sorry.

Oh hell yes I lock them. There is real random evil in this world... why take a chance on leaving the door to your residence unlocked? Doesn't make any sense to me.

Only if any of us are alone or all together. And of course at night. First floor apartment, college town, good area.

I lock my doors all the time. Heck, I even lock my car doors when I'm in the car. Force of habit, plus, why wouldn't you do it? It takes what, maybe half a second to lock/unlock the door when you get in or before you leave?

Same, I wish my car did it automatically. I've seen too many police chase videos where the escapee gets another get away car becasue the door was unlocked.

Yes! Locked all the time - house doors and car doors. You can never be too careful in this mad world we live in now. Maybe in the 1950's one could leave his or her doors unlocked, but I sure wouldn't do it now.

I lock it before going to bed, but not during the day if I'm home. My apartment's in a pretty good neighborhood. I lock my door when I leave.

I'm the same way. Only when in bed, or when I'm away.

even growing up, our family never locked the doors. my wife was all about locking and dead-bolting. f' that.

Forgot the locks, you need to take that dog for more walks!

Always lock it.
And recently managed to get hold of the money i needed to change my front door from a "normal", weak door that could easily be kicked in to one of those "hi-securty" doors that lock all around and have steal bars inside to reinforce them (dunno specific name for it in english).
Houses been getting robbed all around where i live, specially since last November. You can't go 1 single day here without hearing about another house that got robbed. The cafe that is about 1 minute walk time up the street got robbed 8 (yes, eight) times since last November.
Don't have a dog to "protect" the house when i'm not around and altho i do have several guns and the proper training on how to use them (work related) what's he point when i leave home at 6am to go to work and i'm only back at 8pm?

Everything is locked when i leave the house, even when home both of the front doors are always locked.

When i go to bed, everything is checked before sleep. Including the outside gate.

there is no handle from the outside, so technically it is locked from to the outside automatically.

otherwise, I don't lock it when inside and double-lock it when I leave the building.

he's still growing. his mother was 200 and his dad was 250.

I was not referring to the Saint Bernard. I was referring to the golden retriever who, unless you were just averaging for effect, should not (generally) be 100 pounds.

English Mastiff's are pretty big.

Yeah but your retriever is about 30lbs overweight and is at risk from joint problems and diabetes so.....educate yourself!

Can't be too careful. I live a very quiet neighborhood, never had any break-ins or problems or anything since I've lived there, but I still lock the front and back door even when I'm home. Car sits in the garage and is locked with the alarm set all the time as well. Better overkill on security than lack of.

You're right. But still, if the overkill becomes too much of an inconvenience, I will be more lax.

My house was "broken into" because the "man door" of the garage was left unlocked by mistake. We never locked the inside door to the house, until then. Now, not only do we lock that door, but I've rigged up a backup for the other door. So far, I haven't been too inconvenienced to stop using it (just over 5 years now)
