Welcome to Apple's amazing feature discoverability! There are tons of hidden features you'll never learn unless you stumble upon someone mentioning them.

Hilarious and so true. I wish they had some sort of a handbook. Stuff like the five finger swipes to close an app or bring up multitasking bar are so useful. But many people just have no idea.

The only i find thumb typing comfortably on the air with split board is with no case, not eve the smart cover as it still adds bulk.

Since using the air naked, i find that i can thumb type on it comfprtably and grabbing it with one hand.

Just getting into typing on the iPad...so my views may evolve, but as of now, I find it tedious.

I use the split keyboard and thumb method. My speed sucks (hopefully it will quicken) and thus I find myself typing shorter responses on forums....probably for the best since I do tend to go on a bit.

iPad Air. I type with my two pointer fingers in landscape. Same way I type on a physical keyboard.

Still getting used to the split keyboard myself too :)

Ill admit,it takes a lot of getting used to, i absolutely hated it at first but one month later and i actually much prefer this method over a one piece, thumb typing on the minI! And this is coming from someone who thumb typed with one piece board on the mini for a full year! The greatest thing about the split board is that there js very minimal thumb travel.

On the air, this is the only way i can thumb type while holding the device in my hands.

I'm ok with the one piece keyboard but agree the split means less finger movement overall. Still can't decide which way I prefer lol.

I prefer finger typing on my ipad 3 as it's mostly propped up on a desk in landscape mode at a nice ~20 degree angle and its as close to typing on a real keyB as one could hope a touchscreen to be. If I'm lying on my bed or someplace else where I can't find a desk, I go back to thumb typing in portrait mode. But always with the full KeyB instead of the split one.

The thing I hate about the split KeyB on ipad is that unlike iPhone, you don't get a clear notification of which button you pressed. Say for example, on the iPhone if you hit the "R" key, a bigger R key shows up above it confirming you've hit the R key. Considering the accuracy of touchscreen typing, you'll always end up hitting the wrong key every once in a while. Especially on a tiny keyB like the one on iPhone or the split one on the ipad. I don't want to keep looking at both the keyB and the screen back and forth just to confirm its registering the keys I meant it to.

I'm not sure how people are thumb typing on their mini. I just tried and it was too wide for my hands. Then again, I have stubby fingers and my 5S is stretching it.
Finger typing in portrait (preferred) or landscape works best for me.
