For me, the iPad is my main home "computer". It is far superior to the iPhone for web browsing, watching videos (YouTube, Netflix, etc.), document composition (Pages on the iPhone is no fun), reading e-books, and a more enjoyable gaming experience on the bigger screen. Plus, I have much less fear of dropping the iPad in the toilet than the iPhone. :)

My iPhone is always with me, it is my swiss army knife, jack of all trades portable communication device.

The iPad replaced my MacBook Pro as my travel and around the house casual computing tool.
I use others machines for heavy lifting, but the iPad does media consumption better (for me) than anything else. I suppose you could huddle around the iPhone for hrs a day, but I would not find it as enjoyable by a long shot.

My wife's MacBook was on its deathbed, and instead of replacing it with a MacBook Air, she decided to get an iPad. 99% of her computing is consumption, web, mail, social media - she could not be happier.
She already had an iPhone 4, but once you use the iPad you realize it is much more than 'a big iPod Touch'.
Everything comes alive, it's a book, it's holding the web in your hands, it's magazines and newspapers arriving for you before breakfast.

I am so glad someone posted this thread. I have a 4S, a Macbook, and an iMac. I find that I talk myself into justifying an iPad, and then I talk myself out of it. My ultimate goal, is to replace my Macbook. It really doesn't need to be replaced since it serves my purposes just fine. I just don't like that it is dated, and most of all, bulky. I will eventually replace it, but with what? The Macbook Air would suffice, but the expense is what's holding me back. Then there's the iPad. Can the iPad sufficiently replace my Macbook? I can't seem to make up my mind. As soon as I choose one, I talk myself into the other.

You already have a full featured iMac to do anything else you might need.
I can't see why you would miss the MacBook unless you need to do a lot of typing or heavy lifting (full Photoshop, etc) on the go. I surely do not miss lugging my MBP around. The downside is that I am tied to a desk when I need to do serious work.

The iPad is very convenient in my home. The wife is in school now and when she's doing homework and needs a reference she grabs the iPad as oppose to having to get up and get on the PC. Our next purchase will be an MB Air so that I won't have to break out my MB Pro at home at all.

I find myself fighting this battle everyday, I want a 32 GB Ipad but then again I just purchased my Sony Vaio laptop last year.

I can see the benefits of using an Ipad though for like E Books and thing's of that nature.

I have the ipad2 with 64 gig and now the 4S with 64, why? Because I really like them both, the ipad is for the house and travel. Watching movies on the plan is the best! The iPhone is for everything else.

To me they are so different and play different roles, the iPhone is a necessity and the ipad is a toy, and for those respective roles I love them.

Now I do have some great work related apps that have been killer on the ipad, I love reading PDFs and use it all the time at conferences and such.

Well i don't have a iPad yet. I do plan on switching back to Apple Completely in the next few months. Money Situation has had me using a PC for the last couple years.

Now that I'm checking out what Apple has to offer. I'm thinking a iPad might do everything I need from a computer. I just use web, email, skype and music.

I own 13" MBP, iPad 2 64GB, and iPhone 4 32GB, and hope to soon upgrade to 4S. I've used Macbooks for years and my husband surprised me with the first iPad for my birthday when it was released. After using the original iPad for a month, I knew I "needed" an iPhone 4 to replace my aging BB. The iPad is my go-to tool for e-mail, online shopping, web-browsing, news aggregation, e-reading, games, videos, navigation, etc.

Is iPad a replacement for my laptop? No. Do I use it more often than the laptop? Yes, almost all the time. My MBP is irreplaceable for Flash consumption, word processing, spreadsheets, etc., but I find that my daughter uses our laptop for schoolwork most of the time while I use the iPad 90% of the time.

Is iPad a replacement for the iPhone? No. My iPhone can do more than the iPad: phone calls, superior texting, etc.

If things got really tight and I couldn't afford Apple's latest and greatest devices, though, I would say I could live with a cheaper PC and without the iPad but not without my iPhone. The iPhone is indispensable because of its phone capability combined with all of the rest of its utilities. Although the iPad is preferable to me for much of what I do with these devices (web-browsing, e-reading, games, videos, news aggregation, online shopping), it is a luxury item. Would I want to do without it? No. Could I live without it if I had to? Yes. Do I think I could live well without my iPhone? No.

Does that help?

Heh, our house is bursting at the seams with iPhones and iPads.. We have 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, and my MBair. Oh and countless other yucky PCs. (Only 2 adults and one kid in my house!) I'm thinking of selling one phone and one iPad, and just buying a mac mini. The iPad, iPhone, and MBair are overkill for me.

ETA- I think my 5 year old might KILL me if I sell the iPad.. :-o

Because one has a much bigger screen than the other?

Because you can't talk on the one with the big screen.

Because you can't put the one with the big screen in your pants pocket.

Obviously, you need both.

I got an iPad 2 when it first came out, and absolutely loved it until the minute it got stolen. It's the reason I got an iPhone 4s. I will get an iPad 2 again later this year. I liked my iPad much more than the iPhone 4s, mainly because of screen size, and the ability to read my magazines on it.

I own both an iPad 2 and an iP4S. Both are used for essentially the same functions but the iPad is a lot nicer for movies and reading that the phone. The phone is competent at both tasks but the much larger screen of the iPad makes it a much more enjoyable experience.

I have both, the beauty of ios is it can be easily tailored tow what u use them for

Mac pro: heavy duty photoshop, media server, command line fun times, and teaching myself why I need to know for work

iPad: media client, ebook, magazines, av controller, some communications

iPhone: phone, reference when I'm out, emails, killing time, iPod

iPad = presentations for work, all work files/ flyers, etc and when I want to take a larger screen with me anywhere, or sit on the couch and surf while watching tv without having to worry about moving my laptop, plugging it in, etc.

iPhone = everything else. Phone, text, email, all personal files and apps, some games, camera, etc.

Granted, I did get my iPad from work for free....so I'm not sure if I would shell out the bucks for one otherwise, however it does come in quite handy.

I own an iPad 2, iPhone 4S, MacBook Pro. I mostly use my iPad when I'm too lazy to turn the laptop on. Sometimes when I go to someone's house I carry it with me, cause I would feel awkward bringing my computer. HD apps are cool, but it's just a bigger iPod Touch, it won't change your life.

I use my iPhone when I'm out, my iPad when I'm lounging around my house and my MacBook Pro when I'm at my desk. It's the perfect in between device for me.

Nothing beats the iPad for reading the news in the morning and laying on the couch browsing the tech sites in the evening. I mostly just use the iPhone for calls and texting.

I have an iPad because it's much easier to carry around the house and browse the Internet in bed. It's perfect as a cookbook for a bachelor like myself. It's much more normal to carry my iPad over to my friends than to carry a laptop every time. I haven't owned a game console in years and never really felt like getting back into gaming, but the iPad has gotten back into gaming, something I definitely have never been interested in on a laptop or desktop. there a host of reasons, but I think we all get the point.

I have an iPhone because I have an iPad

I am just curious. I have been wanting to pick up an iPad for awhile now but really cannot justify having one as I already have an iPhone. So I am curious, those of you that do own both, what do you do that you would need both.

This is not me trying to justify buying both (maybe it is just a little!) I just want to see what you guys are doing with them.

You could also ask why would you need an iPhone and a MacBook air/pro.

My iPhone is what I use for quick searches, emails, ect. When I want to read or plan to be using the device for more than a couple of minutes I go to the iPad. I use the iPhone 90% of the time and the iPad 90% of my time. I can spend hours at a time on the iPad and minutes of my time on the iPhone. I use my Mac mini once a week when I have to do serious work.

I have Netflix on my iPhone, iPad, and apple tv/46" samsung. Each setup gives a different user experience. Would you not go see a great movie on an IMAX screen because you can watch it on your iPhone?

I own an iPad 2, an iPhone 4, a 13" MBP, and a 27" iMac. It's slightly overkill, but I do use all of them for different things.

The iPad 2 is great for reading, watching videos/TV shows, and general web browsing. The iPhone is great in a pinch, but the screen real estate is just so nice on the iPad 2. I probably didn't NEED one per say, but I am really happy with my purchase and it is fast becoming my "go to" Apple product.

iPad is the ultimate couch, plane, vacation device. iPhone is great for everything else.

I don't like watching movies or reading websites with a lot of reading content on a small device.

And I don't like pulling my iPad out to make calls or find quick directions, or check my email at work on the fly, etc etc

I think this guy put it best. Especially about the Swiss knife for the iPhone, and the iPad for the ultimate "consumption" device
