while everyone is talking about securing your phone just incase it was stolen.. how secure is this pin lock? I know it's nothing like the BB. Also couldnt the person just sync it w/ itune to retrieve the contacts informations?

I also use 4 hour lock to hide SMS previews. The only time I have to enter the code is when I wake up in the morning.

I use an exchange account, so if my phone is ever stolen I can remote wipe the data anyway! :D

1 hour lock for 2 reasons...

1. for the sms privacy feature

2. incase i lose it or gets stolen... it would be locked with in an hour....

i tend to use my phone alot more than once an hour or atleast play with it so i hardly ever have to input the password... just once in a while... not so annoying as having to input it every single time.

i tend to password lock mine as i travel on the train a lot and there are some right characters on there in the morning...

although some times i do feel that the password lock is false economy, and yes i know what i am about to say is proberbly a VERY rare chance of happening BUT heres why i think its a false sense of security.

if your carrying sensitive info on the phone its pretty easy to get it back from a stolen OR second hand phone.

if its stolen simply put it into restore mode flash 1.1.4 back onto it, and use the freely available tools out there to read the contents of the flash memory (been as apple do not securely wipe this when you re-flash the phone)

or if its second hand off the net and its pre-installed with 1.1.4 again even if the previous owner has restored it, use the multitude of free tools to recover any data from the flash memory again.

there is a lot out there regarding the fact that even a restore does not clear the flash ram so that a second hand one can contain a lot of private info from the previous user.

anyway please correct me if i am wrong at anypoint as you only learn from mistakes, but i get the feeling this is pretty accurate info about the phone.

I guess you are right, but i think its best to make it as hard as possible for the thieves to get access to your data....

...But If it's a tech savvy thief you've had it :D

I'm testing exchange use of iPhones @ work.
Seems via iPhone exchange they are able to enforce a mandatory 7 character minimum passcode with 1 special character in it. This over rode my lockcode settings
Working good so far, haven't really tested the meeting accept/decline and scheduling thing

Absolutely, I like having privacy on my phone I hate people reading my texts without my permission. Also the satisfaction of knowing if it's stolen they can't use my phone.
I can be a pain though when there is no one there to read my emails and no chance of it being stolen to have to put in pass-code. I know if I took it off though I'd forget to put it back on.

four-hour lock. I usually need to type in my code (which is "Bosco") once or twice a day.

uh yeah!

I've got mail, social networking apps, ebay/garagebuy app etc. on the iPhone. I can't imagine the damages if ever my iPhone got lost or stolen.

You do realize that even a pass coded phone can make calls to anyone?
try it!
slide the slider and press the emergency call button and enter ANY number and press call
:D
yeah its a worthless phone till they can get it to an iTunes machine to remove the lock code.

I know I should, but I don't.

I would LOVE a feature where it only asks for the code if I haven't touched the phone in more than 30 minutes. I'd use a passcode if that were an option.

EDIT: This inspired me to look...that IS an option.

Ok, thanks, thread! You made me look at it. I'll use it now.

Exactly. All the passcode does is create a false sense of security, as well as an annoyance of constantly having to enter a code.

Lol, yeah best to just have it on and leave it on a certain timer.
