I have been taking guitar l lessons for about a year and a half now but am still struggling to make my fingers do what I tell them to do.
Eventually I do want to start on drums too.

Great thread, - thanks for starting it, OP - and some fascinating posts.
You're welcome! :)

I'm a drummer as well! Incredibly cool - when I read your post I was enthralled with memories of when I first started playing; I've been playing for about 9 years now, though I haven't touched a kit in a while - about a year. Coincidentally, it was Rock Band back in 2007 that REALLY skyrocketed my love, passion, and involvement for and with drumming through the roof - and it's an incredible practice tool. Really, really helps you get the syncopation and different styles of rhythm and beats down. Definitely give it a shot if you haven't already.

I have a practice pad that I still practice my rudiments on, however - traditional, marching snare grip usually in the left hand for this, but sometimes I'll switch back over to matched - Traditional grip is *SO* fun - almost impossible to learn, but once you finally crack it it's very, very fun to play with.

Would love to get an actual kit again; I played the actual drum kit in my high school's Steel Drum band - had live concerts in front of hundreds of people and I was rocking the kit leading the group of about 40 melodic steel pan players on stage - including my drum teacher himself.

Probably one of the greatest time's of my life.

This thread is awesome - keep drumming man!

That is awesome! I have always wanted to play the drums, I just had to get the guts to sit in front of the kit (cause it sounded like a 2 year old playing when I first started, lol.)

I got my singles and double strokes down pat on my practice pad, still working on the Paradiddle's. I play in German/American grip, and I havent tried to attempt traditional. It does look like a blast to play that way, though.

I'm a pianist.

As I compose music for films and do a bit of EDM here and there, I play a lot of other instruments on the keyboard as well :D

...Also I've always been into Metal, so a couple years ago I bought a guitar and started playing with it... Not that easy when you're used to a keyboard but eventually I'll get there! Guitar is really more a hobby for me...but damn it's fun! ;)

...Cool thread indeed! :)

Actually, while I have achieved much of what I had dreamed of as a child, or teenager - (traveling a lot, becoming a published author among others), one of my childhood, or teenage dreams - or fantasies - that never happened was learning to play a musical instrument.

I greatly admire those who can.

I play both the piano and guitar, although due to lack of time I don't practice enough these days so no longer play as well as I did. Amazingly I do still remember a lot of the music I learned to play though.

I've always wanted to learn the violin, but given the time issue it's unlikely I ever will. Not to a standard I'd be happy with anyway.

Started on trombone, added baritone bugle when I started drum corps halfway through high school, added tuba and contrabass bugle my second year, and parlayed it into a military music career.

Drum corps is still the genre I enjoy the most. Drum corps is to music performance like cyclocross is to bike racing.

I could point you guys towards any entrance to the youtube drum corps rabbit hole. Might as well start here:

Pre-show warmup from the Bluecoats of Canton, Ohio. The instructor is playing trap because contest rules have recently prohibited amplified metronomes from being used in warmup areas -- so these guys decided to be creative and add some fun to it.

Played the recorder in elementary school, baritone in middle school, and trombone in middle school and high school. Since I left school I've learned piano, and am currently learning drums.

Well, I suppose this is necroposting, but since I've found this thread, I might as well share. I play euphonium/baritone in marching and concert band. I also play piano. Also a big drum corps fan, like the guy above.
