The phone has tap to wake (iphone 8 doesn't)... so contact with your skin through your pants pocket is making it think you're trying to wake the phone. Hence me telling you to put the phone in your pocket facing out or getting a sleeve for your phone so there is a thicker barrier between the screen and your leg. Apparently your pants pocket material isn't thick enough to prevent inadvertent touches.

Solved for me. Mine was pocket dialing emergency contacts. Look for “Emergency SOS” in settings.

So I returned my Max and got the Xr. Restored from a backup so all settings are the same. Didn't change my habits at all.

I haven't pocket dialed once in the last month.

Weird.

Turn off tap to wake so the display isnt turning on every time it's bumped; and make sure screen timeout is set to a time and not forever keeping the phone unlocked.

But it's pretty impossible to input a PIN or use Face ID without touching the phone or taking it out of pocket. A capacitive screen cannot register through cloth.

It's literally impossible to pocket dial an iphone using biometrics.
[doublepost=1560867408][/doublepost]You really need to remove the word literally because that’s not true . In the past hr my phone has dialed all by it’s lonesome three times . My iPhone XR iOS 12.3 was in my cargo pants lower front pocket facing out but Not upSide down. I’m working then all of a sudden I hear ringing in my AirPods . Nearest Apple store is almost 2 hours away. Oh facial recognition is on alpha numeric passcode .

My XS Max just started doing this within the past week or so. Last week it pocket dialed 3 different people (one of them twice) within 4 minutes. Did it again today.

I’ve also discovered the phone on and playing music after being stored in my pocket for a few minutes after exiting the car, where it had been plugged in and playing through the stereo.

I have an Apple Watch Series 4, if that means anything.

I’ve never had an iPhone do this before, and the XS Max had never done it until very recently. I always carry the phone facing in, top down, and the screen is off before inserted into the pocket.
[doublepost=1563054383][/doublepost]I went into Settings, “Face ID & Passcode” and turned off “Return missed calls” in the “Allow access when locked” section.

Hope this solves the problem.

I sure do especially if I put my phone in my pocket without hitting swiping up and closing the screen and pushing the side button to the screen off. I call those on my favorites all the time.

If it was that easy to break into an iPhone just by putting it in a pocket & walking around for awhile, Cellebrite would be out of business and iPhones would be getting hacked open all the time. Neither of those things are happening.
Although you may not think so, you're locking it wrong before putting it in your pocket. (It's not getting locked before you stick it in your pocket)

thanks for the replies. Seems like I'm a bit alone here.

Phone has been reset a couple times (for other issues).

I know for a fact the screen is locked when I put it in my pocket. I started making totally sure after it happened a few times. The last time it happened I could hear the typing through my AirPods. Took the phone out of my pocket and I had inputted 2 numbers at the passcode screen.

"Auto lock" is set to the minimum 30 seconds. I always thought there was a "lock immediately" option but I don't see it.

Raise to wake is on. I guess I'll try to turn it off.

I'm not inclined to put the screen facing out when in my pocket. Cant risk breaking the screen if I bump up again some plumbing or whatever. Ive already cracked 3 Apple Watch screens in the last couple years. I can be hard on my devices.
[doublepost=1563309485][/doublepost]HaHa!
i was looking for this problem that other people might be having! found it.
when im wearing something without pockets, i would snug my iphone max on my hips facing skin and pants- I make sure phone was locked, to mke sure im not pocket dialing, random texting, etc!
Phone would unlock when im doing phone on skin contact... i guess i would a way to break into iphone max!

Update. I got so tired of this happening I switched back to my old (cracked) iPhone 7 Plus. Problem went away.

I just bought an 8 Plus off Swappa. Plan on using it for as long as possible. Long live the home button! :)

I'm glad it's not just me. I just swapped my XS Max folio case for a thin cover (so the screen is no longer covered when the phone is in my pocket). Walking home from work today, I somehow managed to activate airplane mode whilst the phone was in my pocket. Then when walking my dog, took phone out of pocket and not only was the compass open, but I'd zoomed in the screen (I have the accessibility function of 'tap with 3 fingers to zoom' option switch on). I know the phone was locked when I put it in my pocket (upside down, screen inwards), so have no idea how anything opened.

Have pocket "Called an Uber" in sweaty gym shorts. Didn't know until the guy showed up at my house. Had to pay the $10 cancellation fee. :(

I receive these kinds of calls 3 - 5 times a week and send a few too - usually 1-2 times per week

Sometimes I send - just setting my phone on a table activates it - perhps a touch while setting the phone down etc ??

You might think that....But you would be wrong...
My iphone XS Max does this ...crap all the time...at least daily.
And it is always screen locked when it goes in my pocket..always
Daily, people tell me about when I was having a conversation with X, Y, or Z when this things pocket dials.
I'm turning off Face Id and trying that..even though obviously it ain't my face turning it on

You have no idea what you're talking about because this is happening to me daily. I can program in 3 languages..do you think I don't know how to lock the phone...That's why this is a thing..it's happening often to many XS Max users for sure and maybe others.

I turned off Face ID and Password AutoFill...if that doesn't work, I'll be doing the same as you did with the older phone.

Ive had the FaceTime call twice.

Its good to know I'm not actually alone!

This is happening to my husbands brand new phone. Did either of you ever find a solution? He went to Apple and they had no record of this issue happening to others! It’s super annoying!

Not sure if I am missing something but I don't see how an iphone can pocket dial even if it accidentally wakes up since you still have to slide open the lock screen, then either have face ID recognize you or put in your passcode, then open the phone app, and then pick a contact. How does even the lock screen open up in your pants pocket? I can see how bumping the screen may keep it turned on, but for it to actually open the lock screen? I don't get it.

Seems to me that if this is indeed happening, there is some other bug or something going on.

I had this happening a lot recently too, with the phone locked in the pocket requiring face id. I think it's "Accessibility->Touch->Tap to Wake" that wakes it up, so turn it off. Could also be Raise to Wake but it's pretty useful with Face ID so let's see if I can leave that one on.

As for the dialling, I already had almost everything turned off from the lock screen aside from Wallet, but I did have Siri Suggestions on Lock Screen on, so it may have been that. Hoping for better luck with this setup... and maybe put the screen facing out in the pocket.

This has never happened to me. I've used folio cases on my iPhones for the longest time, though, so that might have something to do with it.

This thread has been interesting. I managed to pocket-dial on my X and now also on my 11Pro. always when I have my hand in my pocket, touching the phone. I’ve never worked out how it managed to do it - obviously it wasn’t a Face ID and not being possible to unlock with the PIN. Perhaps it’s the emergency numbers thing for me.

I have never pocket dialed on any device ever. Don't see how it is possible unless you either voice activate or accidentally dial your emergency contacts somehow.

I have a bad habit of not turning off the screen but sticking it in my pocket still on. Because of this, I do pocket dial. I can bend over and hear start ringing. It is usually to those in my favorites.
