I think you only need 16GB if you want lots of music and movies on it. If you don't have alot of music or movies, or are content to only keep a limited selection on your iphone, 8GB is fine. In terms of applications, I've found they take up hardly any space at all. I think it actually would be impossible to put enough applications on the iphone that would exceed the 8GB memory, since the iphone limits you to I think its 8 pages of apps. Unless they start making alot of really large(100mb plus) apps, app space should not be an issue.

32GB would be great because then I could put ALL my music on my iPhone. Currently though my 16 gig 3G only has 90MB of free space.

Thank you! I think my question has now been answered. My original iPod, from about 4 years ago (the only iPod I own), only has 2GB of songs on it. Based on everything I've heard from this thread, it seems like the only reason anyone would want the 16GB is because they spend their paycheck on buying new songs every week. I don't buy that many new songs. And with a camera that is only 2MP, 8GB can hold A LOT of pictures! So really, Apps are the only thing I would need substantial memory for, and it sounds like 8GB will be sufficient. Thanks guys! :)

The only thing that made me nervous about the 8gb phone was the possibility of some future fantastic gps/mapping application that included offline maps that might take up loads of space, but current applications surely don't come close to the 8gb limit, and even with offline maps i doubt any gps program will be too large for the 8gb.

Also my 160g classic is always nearby if i want my music!

Depends on your finances. If you can afford it, go for it - it's so easy to find >8GB of things to fit onto your iPhone.
I'm sure 8GB owners are reassuring themselves of their purchase as much as 4GB purchasers did.

16Gb is useful for storing large amounts of video and application content, but If you don't watch videos, or don't need the extra 8GB, you'll be quite happy with 8GB, I'm sure.

Another reason I chose to jump to 16GB over 8GB is, I would be more inclined to buy the next model, if that model was 32GB, if I had 8GB, as it would feel quite small.
Jumping to 16GB, and looking at the same situation, Ok, it's twice as much storage, but I'm now content with 16GB for the time being.

Currently I'm using 10.2GB out of 14.6GB (the actually formatted capacity of the 16GB model)

i actually ended up getting the 8gb because i wanted black and the 16's were out. at first i though it would be a problem, but i previously used an 8gb nano, so the mp3 switch was easy, and i dont really watch movies on it because it drains the batteries quickly and i dont like having it out in the open on the subway anyway. i'm still considering trying to switch it out for a 16 just to be safe, so if i were you, i'd just get the 16 and have some peace of mind.

I've had my iPhone 3G for nearly a month now and i still have 7.08Gb free with 2 pages full of apps and many songs and ringtones. I found that I get bored with my mp3's and I create a stream in Pandora.
Streaming is the way to go for me..I don't have to keep them on my iPhone, but I can usually find my favorite tracks on a Pandora stream.

Edit: I may retract my statement above when I get into podcast and movies..

My iTunes Library weights almost 11 gigs and I still got a chunk of cd's to transfer - 16gb is actually too small for my needs.

I hardly use my phone as an iPod; can probbaly count on one hand the times I've seriously used it to listne to music since I got it (July 15th). Also, I have hearing issues, so I can't tell much between bit rates, so most of my songs are encoded at 80 kbps., so I can fit tons of stuff on my 8 gb.

I wouldn't worry too much about that - I had a TOMTOM Go and the entire mapping data for the UK came on a 128MB SD card. For substantially larger areas, I'm sure there would be a way of selectively loading maps for an area

8GB is perfect for me. I'm happy i didn't spend the extra $100 since its not needed for me. When i had 2 movies, my music (i dont have a lot of music, but its def. my iPod now), and about 1 and a half pages of apps downloaded, i still had a good 4-5 GB's left so I'm very happy with 8GB

Unfortunately, you have to get out of the habit of carrying all your music around with you and start using playlists to selectively load up the iPhone

14.6 GB capacity, less 5.2 GB free means I've already used 9.4 GB...

I don't think it's fair to say that one CAN'T be happy with 8GB. As many others have posted, it's all in how you use the iPhone. If you don't take advantage of the iPod feature (which I do), you'll probably have scads of space available on an 8GB iPhone.

I won't be getting rid of my 40 GB iPod anytime soon. For longer trips, it's handier to have that plugged into my car stereo than the iPhone (besides, it charges from the car...).

But for daily back & forth to work, it's simpler and easier to carry just the one device. Well worth the extra $100 to me.

Using it as an iPod DOES affect the battery life quite a bit. I find that by the time I get home at the end of the day, between periodic e-mail checking, the occcasional game of Mahjong, and 6 hours plus of iPod use, I'm in the 30% remaining level by the end of the day. But most of the time I'm home, it stays docked, so it gets a charge right away.

400 songs, 10 movie videos, about 10 apps= about 3GB left from my 16GB iPhone. When they say an iPhone comes with 16GB, they don't say how much is actually used by the software and what not. 16GB is only really about 14.64GB.

Do the conversion yourself and see.

1 music file=7.5MB for good sound quality
1 movie file=900MB for good quality/sound quality
1 app installed=17MB for a usual free app

Now that doesn't include bookmarking, contact list, photos, etc.

What a change from the iPod mindset! ;)

My library is too big for either the 8GB or the 16GB iPhone also. I have 8GB, and I manage just fine, but my iPhone has been essentially full from day one. If I had 16GB, it would still be full but I'd have more music versatility. If I had 32GB, I think it would have a moderate amount of space left (I don't really have videos, and the old 30GB iPod Photo I use in my office isn't full on the sync-everything setting).

i agree with what the other guy said..i was a first gen. iphone user with an 8gb iphone..this time around i got a 16gb ..8gb will go fast not to mention all of the apps that are going to keep comming ...i have 49 videos on mine 1000 songs a couple pod casts like 200 photos and i have like 5 gigs left and i will add videos and more music and podcasts and apps so yeah just my 2 cents :)

$100???

I dont think thats a good investment i have an 80 gig ipod thats nearly full and i see it like this neither phone can hold everything so why waste the money. As long as i have room for applications and photos im good. Ill just make playlsts for the stuff i do listen to and swap playlist from time to time. While i do understand double the memory for only $100 is great how about double the BATTERY LIFE:mad: ide pay the extra$100 for that anyday. Seriously you could have 16gigs of music and i have 8 gigs of music we can start listening at the same time and we would have listened to the same # of songs and ill have $100 in my pocket. So if your like me and dont need to have the bigesst everything to make up or your P***S size just get the 8gig spend the exrat $100 on assecories

I have the 8 GB 3g and so far I still have more than 3 GB left. I have my complete music collection in it and pretty much all the apps that I like. I don't think I'm going to need 16 GB anytime soon:p

Plenty

I own Mini (4GB) and also Zune (30GB) and Iphone 3g (8GB)

I'am used to managing music on my mini (4GB). I fail to understand why anyone would need to have all their music with them. Most people would only actively listen to 200-300 songs at a time, the rest of it is simply a dead weight, it makes you feel good that it is there, I guess, but you end up never listening to it. On my Mini (4GB) 30% of the stuff got only one listen perhaps in the last 2 years. Just a dead weight. My Zune has over 15GB of music in it, but I really don't know why I put it there, there is no way I need to listen to all that at the same time.

I currently have about 250 songs and 3 full-length movies on my iphone 3G, plus about 50 photos. I am about 5GB in (including systems files) so I still have 3GB to go. 8GB is plenty for me for my immediate needs

for me 8gb is plenty. used to have a 16gb ipod touch that i could fill up easily with various tv shows and movies but then realised its actualy pointless and a waste of time to watch them on the ipod/iphone (for me).

I had over 15gb of music, i went through it looking at what i had never listened to, what i hadnt listened to in ages, what i will likely never listen to and deleted them from my library, and got rid of the bad songs from some albums etc and managed to get down to about 8gb of music (not aiming for that).

Then i used some smart playlists as to sort out the music i didnt want on the iphone, like music that i would only listen to when having parties and before a night out. And one playlist that with that sort of music for the gym.

After all the sorting out was done i ended up with 1134 songs which is 6.1gb of music on my iphone. With one music video on there.

I have then installed the following apps, Facebook, spinner, shazam, auroa feint, monkey ball (truly awful btw), remote, google, crash kart.

Already have over 1000 texts on there.

About 30 photos taken on the camera, and 2 synced from itunes

With all of that and the firmware i have used 7.1GB of space with 549MB left.

So do i believe that 8GB is enough? Yes... if your the sort of person that has music to listen to and not just to say i have more than you etc and never listen to most, and if your not overly interested in watching movies on there, i stil have enough space for afew tv episodes which cud be updated with new ones automaticaly daily.

Btw i am a music enthusiast and am never not listening to music throughout the day normaly (student :D) but am fairly selective with what i listen to, ish.

Hope this helps you

i got 16GB, i have NO VIDEOS about 2MB of pics, and like 4.4GB of music...so for me 8GB is PLENTY, and i think apps only take like 1MB on your iPhone, i would have gotten 8GB, but since the 3G came out, my cuz gave me the 16GB that he had(EDGE only version), and im happy because i got it for free :D and its the highest space model

i've had 4, 8, and 16gb iphones. seeing as i travel (in the air and car) for a living it's nicer to have more space so i don't have to constantly update it. i have 50gb of music and about 15gb of movies and shows. rather than carrying my full sized ipod, i just bring my iphone. can watch movies on the plane and listen to music in the car. people make a big deal about 'when would you possibly need to listen to that much music?' the truth is, when you're in the mood for a song it's nice to be able to listen to it and not think, 'damn, i didn't put it on the playlist today'. that's extremely annoying.
i'm not upgrading to the 3g until they release 32gb version.

Personally, I think 8gb is the way to go. I can't justify spending 50% extra just for more memory. Also, I think that it's just inspires laziness as well. You're probably plugging your iPhone into your computer everyday so why not swap out the old stuff for some new stuff now and then? I have 234 days worth of music on my laptop, and that's still just 5.91gb.

may be some want to have their ENTIRE music collection with them. They dont want to decde how they will fell in the feature. they want to have EVERYTHING with them

thats why they have larger HDs;)
