The Fitbit Surge has a GPS built in, gets a week of battery life, is waterproof, and is less expensive. Apple better figure out this who battery ordeal, especially since we are not getting a GPS.

I don't think the trade off solely because GPS is battery inefficient. If anything, looking at how the components are crammed together, I think it's because including the hardware for GPS squeezes out just too much space for the battery, or more than Apple was willing to give up. Not only would the GPS use additional battery power, there would be less in the pool overall, causing performwance problems on other aspects.

GPS does require a LOT of power to monitor accurately. Not only for the once a second radio contact but also for the DSP error correction and data processing. On the Fitbit Surge you can get UP to a week of battery life but NOT if you use the GPS. GPS will suck the battery life down quickly. Just a guess but you are probably looking at 5 hours or so of GPS tracking. Just for comparison my Garmin 620 is rated for up to 6 weeks but only up to 10 hours (and it's more like 4 to 6 hours) with GPS.

That's why I said solely.

Can someone with # i⌚ confirm that it can trace a perfect 3D path just using the built-in accelerometer (with no tether to i# )?

They can trace a path of where you exactly have been.

The add the starting/ending point, and you have a perfect trace.

BS... source?

Map/location data is done through the Internet, not GPS.

Phone for that.

No.

Show me your Apple Watch... you see to already know everything about the Apple Watch, including contradicting what Apple says.

I am curious to see how long it takes before customers become more demanding, if they ever do. Having to expand the number of devices carried daily with the iPhone, Apple Watch Combo is not only not efficient, it can be very annoying for some of us.

Yet Apple followers are very quick to do as Apple says they should do. A very large number even buy into the belief that Apple knows what's best for them. It's a rather bizarre display of dedication.

No you can not, without my iPhone the distance can be way off too. In my first run with my :apple:Watch I did 12 miles. However my :apple:Watch recorded it as 9 miles (pre calibration). As pointed out in this thread by may people (including me) Tanegashima didn't know what they were talking about (notice they are Banned too).

Also Apple doesn't even offer mapping abilities even if you have your iPhone with you.

EDIT: Just to add, once you get it calibrated it can be reasonably close. Yesterday I did a 10 mile (10.09) run and my :apple:Watch recorded it at 9.68 miles.

Still there is no substitute for GPS and if you what mapping you MUST have GPS since the :apple:Watch is only counting steps to estimate your distance.

They said that you need an iPhone to use the watch, but do you need it at all times??? Could I go for a run using my watch and keep my phone at home??

I really hope so because I hate running with a phone

for what's its worth you can purchase using Apple Pay thats in the watch w/o the phone.

:p
