People use cases?
Those who like to keep their phone nice for re-sale & don't like blowing $180 on an AppleCare+ replacement do.

So do these same people who rely on Applecare to 'protect' their phones rely on their auto insurance to protect their cars from their own carelessness or stupidity?
Maybe both?
It's not like you could simply put a protective case on a car to protect it from a 65mph crash. With iPhones you can and that's why for some people it makes the AppleCare insurance cost a 'waste' compared to simply buying a $15 case to keep it in.
Applecare doesn't protect your phone from dents, scratches, or scuffs.
Why do so many people think Applecare serves the same purpose as a case?
I don't use a case because I don't like covering up the beautiful design. It gives me the freedom to admire it whenever I want to.
Before 3 years, Apple replaces the device with a new one if the the sleep or home button wears out. Although, if the screen is damaged you still have to pay $79. Without AppleCare+, they'll replace the device for worn buttons for free within your 1 year warranty
I understand that, but that still doesn't answer my question.
If you end up in the position where you have to make an Applecare claim to get your phone repaired/replaced, it's already damaged. If you had a case on it, there's a possibility that damage could have been prevented in the first place.
Yes Applecare is a good thing, but it doesn't protect your phone from physical damage, accidental or otherwise. It just makes it cheaper to repair.
Yes, the phone is beautiful caseless. But it gets dinged up and scratched without one.![]()

Not for free. They don't care if the device gets damaged because AppleCare+ will give them another one.
Neither does Applecare. Applecare may provide an easier, less costly path to replacement in case of water damage, but an iPhone with Applecare is no more waterproof than one without Applecare. Also, typical cases don't protect from water damage.
3 years?
Can anyone else confirm this for the U.S.? I thought it was 1-year warranty and after that you are on your own.
3 years with AppleCare+, 1 without.

Pretty sure in the U.S. that AppleCare+ only gives you 1 extra year of warranty (beyond the year of warranty you already have) for a total of 2 years, not 3.
The points are:
- water damage without AppleCare+, buy a new phone with money saved from not buying AppleCare+.
- water damage with AppleCare+, replace phone with money saved on not buying a case.

+1 I made the mistake of not using a case before. Seriously, I still haven't figured out what scratched my 4s. It was just in my pocket and a hairline scratch appeared out of no where.
Yes but at this point, who cares? And I mean that as non-confrontational as possible... I was just telling my wife today as I traded in the old old 4 that had been passed around like a swisher at a snoop show... It seems so silly now to have been so worried about a little ding or nick. It's gone now...
If the plan was to keep the phone, maybe.... But even then, I reference my 100% flawless iphone 5 that is now a very slim and elegant paperweight on my desk. Sure I'll use it as an iPod still. But it'd still make a good iPod with a teeny scratch on it too!!
Point is, don't sweat the small stuff because before you know it, that won't matter anymore!!!
I find myself constantly removing my protective case to admire my iPhone naked.
This is especially true with my newly acquired iPhone6 but even with my iPhone5 I would probably take it out of its case once a week or so and enjoy using it in all its beauty.
Anyone else do this?
