I had never seen a cockroach at all until I went to Japan. I'd see them all over there, but only twice in my apartment (which I kept clean). Still have yet to see one anywhere in Salt Lake. Of course there were a lot worse creatures than cockroaches in Japan...

Down here in Florida, we have more roaches than old people. And we have a lot of those! Both wander in and out of my house regularly. Spray usually gets rid of them. But I have to call the exterminator for the roaches.

;)

I do run across the odd german roach. I do not particularly care for the big flying ones (B-52s). I usually take a slipper(flip flops) to them.

Roach + fire =:). Roaches don't really live here... at least in my house, but I'm never taking a walk at night again. Although once a roach scuttled out of a bag of pretzels at my friends house: roach + pretzel = :(. I tend to get little fluttery brown moths: moth + anything = :). As well as some mini ants. But the best thing is the japanese beetles in the garden: japanese beetle + BB gun = :). Yes, I kill them with a BB gun, but have gotten rather attached to them... kinda.

Well the idea is to hit them mid-flight; bring down that high altitude bomber crashing to the floor with a barrage of anti-aircraft slippers.
I'm not too keen on any type of flying insect (particularly moths ..) so I hide .. until they have come in to land ..... then strike.
Unfortunately this usually leaves a trail of death and destruction about a foot long ...:eek:

Not to go off topic, but these bugs (Cicada) hurt when they hit you -- especially when they hit you in the face.

In that regard, I much prefer a cockroach landing on my face as it is merely annoying but doesn't hurt. I've been hit hard enough by a Cicada to break (small cut) the skin of my forehead.

Back on topic, on YouTube there are videos of cockroaches coming up through the storm drains in Tokyo. Many roaches. I would hate to see what it looks like underneath to cover.

June bugs are friggin' scary. They came every June back where I used to live in Newfoundland. They're big dumb flying bugs that ram themselves into windows in the evening (making loud "plonk" noises) and latch onto any fabric or hair they touch. And if they latch on, they'll lose their legs before they let go.

My stepmom got attacked by them a few years ago when she was picking some vegetables in the greenhouse. She happened to have a large knife (like a machete) handy, and started swinging it wildly to protect herself...she actually cleaved one in half in mid-air. True story.

EDIT: Here's a link.

Yeah we have June Bugs here in New Brunswick too, they're nuts! You can see hundreds flying at your windows all at once, and it makes camping interesting because they keep flying at your camp fire and then fly into the light and burn alive. It would be entertaining if they didn't blow up due to the heat and splatter on your food.

I actually live in downtown Fredericton, but I've never seen any in the city (I was in Freddy all last summer too). As much as I love living in the middle of nowhere, city life does have its advantages ;)

in my town theyre called palmetto bugs because they hang out in the palm trees and they are EVERYWHERE (except my house, of course :)) i usually see 25-50 when walking downtown at night.

I was about to say the same thing. We call them Palmetto bugs here also (Charleston SC). It kind of makes them sound less dirty. They are everywhere outside and come in when it rains alot. They are not the ones that are around because of food / messes though. The ones that you have to look out for are the smaller brown roaches and the ones that stick their butts in the air when they are smaller. Those are attracted to food scraps. I hate seeing the palmetto bugs when they crawl up the wall and walk across the ceiling. That is when I whip out the bug spray.

The big ones that fly(roach) creep me out....They always seem to be around the trash shoot.

June bugs are crazy....they will headbutt you...what really get to me is this thing

Bless

Sorry to go OT, but while cockroaches are a pest and are just plain nasty, and Cicada's are a pain in the butt, these guys actually scare me a bit...

And yes, I've seen them up close (no that is not my hand). They are huge and look very menacing. Note, regular hornets and wasps don't phase me at all, but these guys do.

You can see them in this video Hornet's from Hell

Goodness, people, this is for discussing cockroaches and insect phobias/eradication methods. Not posting hideous, frightening photos of them.

I get them all the time.

Well they are in a tank and are my 'pets'

2 Madagascan hissing cockroaches and 2 other smaller cockroaches. Along with two stick-insects.

Isn't that a Colorado potato beetle? It's a notifiable pest in the UK.

Do you see the German ones in Hawaii, San Francisco, or both? I very rarely see them in SF -- just the occasional little bugger that crawled out of the sewer and wandered along the sidewalk.

I saw a few of the big, flying ones when I went to Sydney, Australia. Yuck. They're enough to make me stick to the cooler climates, thanks.

Come to think of it, I haven't yet seen a roach here in San Francisco. Hawaii's another story altogether although I imagine the weather has a lot to do with it. That or maybe the high cost of living in S.F. is keeping them at bay; which I guess could be same said of Hawaii, lol.:p

My neighborhood is littered with them at night. Especially in the hot humid nights of summer. There are some spots where it looks like a carpet of black on the sidwalk only to get closer and you see hundreds of roaches.

That said I get a few roaches in my apartment a year. I also live in the basement, which means I get other wicked bugs as well. I cut down on the amount of bugs in the last few years by getting a new window and really plugging up all the little cracks and holes everywhere. But these things can squeeze through pretty much anything.

And yeah I'm completely terrified of insects so when I do find one it is a big ordeal.
