I’m torn. The last legitimate post was from 2007. Some of the names haven’t been around for up to 8 years.

On topic, my last house had more of a problem than current. The city would treat the sewers, and 2” roaches would come up the toilet. Not fun.

Only in the old Eastern Europe; Vilnius in Lithuania, and parts of Croatia. An academic in Vilnius blamed the Russians: "It was the Russians. The Russians brought the rats, and the cockroaches and bad language, such as cursing." While I very much doubted this, good manners decreed that I did not contradict her.

Once, while observing an election in southern Croatia, I noticed that the bathroom of the hotel where I stayed had a small espresso cup placed upside down over the plughole of the shower. Puzzled, and more than a little surprised, I removed it, only to discover on a later, nocturnal, trip to the bathroom exactly why it had been so carefully put there in the first place.

I don't think we even get them in GB, or at least I have never seen them. The occasional silverfish though and lots of spiders (Georgian era house in rural England).

In fact, the only time I have even ever heard of them in our part of the world is when some restaurant or takeaway might be shut down by the health authorities on the grounds of hygiene, health & safety.

I've only ever really heard about them on TV shows of US origin, I assumed they must be an American insect, but looking it up apparently we do get a couple of types including some quite big (3cm) ones!

I used to see then a lot when I lived in the South Eastern region of U.S. ...the worst were the water-bugs (bastards had wings and would sometimes fly at you 0_0 ). I eventually moved up toward the Great Lakes region and haven't seen one since :)

If 3cm is the biggest roach you get then it's probably an Australian roach, since the American roach starts at 3cm. The biggest roach I've stomped (chemical free pest control:D) measured 5cm (nearly 2 inches for us 'Mericans). Maybe the roaches are bigger here because "everything is bigger in Texas.";)

There's big ones in the NYC area , too . The last school I taught in had a big time waterbug issue . Every few months they'd get exterminators in and you'd see the carcasses in the halls when you came in in the A.M. . You really didn't want to leave anything of your stuff on the floor by your desk . I made the mistake one time of doing so and when I got home I was greeted by a 1 1/2 - 2" one popping out of my briefcase . Fortunately it only made it to the edge of the kitchen counter before encountering my copy of French & Vierck's Engineering Drawing moving rapidly downward . Last thing I needed was to have it escape under my fridge or range.
