Yes, and I often use a nickname as well to make it easier to use Voice Commands.

So could you put the nickname "Mom" and just say that than her actual name?

I only ever use the first name, normally followed by Mobile or Home.

I'll use both if I find myself with two people with the same first name, but i'll only give the latest addition the surname.

It's primarily down to the fact that up until I got an iPhone, no phone I had would let me put in full names.

Me too, for whatever reason, my defaulted way to search people is by their last name. I know everyone's last name by heart.

I use both first names and last names too. I used to have it so that some people had initials while others didn't and eventually my OCD got to me, so I finally had to put last names on everyone's contact in my phone.
