In its current iteration, I can't see the iPad replacing the standard desktop. I think the device will really need to step up it's computing power before that happens.

I tried to use my iPad2 as a replacement for a laptop during business trips but I found it didn't have enough processing power for some of the things I need to do, so went back to traveling with my MBP. I really use the iPad as a media consumption device - but hey, who knows. Things are changing all the time.

Yes it has meet my personal needs at this time for it hold's my music -library of book's & dvd movies & games on it when i travel . Here is my reason why i say it does everything i need to do .It the perfect sized travel unit to answer my emails or send a email or surf the web or play a game or listen to music when i have down time from work and it does not take up so much weight & space in my luggage when i travel .

I just throw the bag with the ipad and it accessories in the carryon sized bag i use to carry my cloths & shaving kit for work travel .It easly on and off the plane when i'm traveling and having not to carry both a laptop bag and a carryon bag togerther is nice when traveling intoday way of having to go through a airport and it security scans .

I doubt the ipad will replace it altogether, unless you are one of those people who buys a laptop simply to watch movies while sipping on your coffee at starbucks. :p

I can safely say this, is that my iPad did replace over 85% of my time on the computer. For most things yes, but for some things, no.

Video editing, Mac
Internet, iPad
Long keyboard sessions, Mac
Facebook, AIM, Skype, iPad.
YouTube, iPad
Shopping, iPad
Work/School, iPad (Web apps)

Only when mac os and ios merge. It will be one big cloud-oriented os with possibility of some sort of bootcamp. Although imho i think win will also have some sort of cloud-oriented os. So, you will have possibility of runnig all apps you want - all you need is log in on winCloud or macCloud.
This will be the day when freedom in the internet dies. You will be able to run only "approved" apps (it will a LOT wors then today's appStore), all your posts, searches etc will be tracked, as well as your gps coordinates 24/7. This will be perfect opportunity for OPA. 60-90% of world websites will be closed. Macrumors want be exception (rumors, forums, blogs, opinion in general will be considered as evil).
There will be one internation organisation for controlling and registering websites. Opening site will be more expensive and more complicated than opening small business.
Your devices will replace your payment methods, and eventually your id.
By that time all physical information-carrying devices will be illegal (hdd, sdd, clean cd etc). You will have instead your personal/education/work cloud server that will be an object of harsh censorship and penal code.
As the result, the art in general will die. Musicians want be able to promote their music. There will be one online music store, you want be able to record your music on cds and make demos, all public concerts will require licence (harder then medical licence). Same thing with cinema. Same thing with books. I doubt they will censor beatles-elvis, or old movies. But no new such talents will appear.

That is when ipad will replace home computer:) i would give 10 years, 15 top

Nope, software development and graphics are still part "full computer-only", and will be for the next couple of years.

Perhaps in a decade or two… but not as things stand right now.
For a start I need something to store my music and movies and such (and no the f***g Apple Cloud is not up to scratch).

And games?

So no. Not a chance for quite a while.

Of course I am quite sure that *OTHERS* will disagree… ;)

I do disagree....Technology moves so fast and improvements are coming our way and 1 to 2 decades is just plan wrong.

I'd say for some, right now the iPad is a desktop/notebook replacement, and in about 5 yrs at most in my opinion, the iPad or other tablets will be replacing a whole bunch more. Get SIRI to improve over the next few years and we will be talking to our tablets to do things that required a mouse or keyboard.

Decades.....No. In a few years like 3/5 and yes, more and more of use will replace our desktops. For the business man/women than perhaps 5/7 yrs and for the CAD workers and such, maybe 10/15 yrs. Just my opinion based on how fast technology has progressed thus far

Not until it supports flash and has at least a 500 GB hard drive.

Do none of you have families? I and many I know have multiple desktops and laptops in their homes. In the future we'll only need one desktop/laptop and the rest can be replaced with iPads.

(Also giant LOL at 'anything the iPad can't do' = serious work and 'anything the iPad can do' = casual work. Nerds will hang on to this distinction until the end of time, no matter what the iPad becomes capable of.)

Nope...

Gaming and the joy of a big screen.

Ergonomics for long term use...

USB ports.

Disk drive for movies when I am away from home.

That's a hard one, I have a MP with a 30" display making it nicer to do more intensive stuff. The iPad replaced my couch surfer and I have no worry about it being my only computer access when travelling.

Yeah, I can't see this current or near future generation of tablets replacing other computers in my house. The iPad is an awesome supplement, but it's just too consumptive of a device and not very productive.

Beyond computer power being an issue, I'd need a transparent file system, blue tooth mouse connection to do proper editing in word documents, and a USB plug with regular access to the file system. Even then there is a hurdle in not having enough screen real estate. I want to eventually have three 24" or bigger monitors in front of me for my digital work environment, so aside from HUD glass displays, the iPad isn't going to cut it.

What I would love to see from the iPad though would eventually be able to "flick" or otherwise move content from the iPad to the desktop without having to go through email/dropbox/etc. If I could find a URL on the iPad and be able to send it immediately to my desktop firefox browser without needing to do anything else then that alone would be huge.

Another way of looking at is is how in Avatar one of the scientists picked up a "monitor" at a station and it was immediately it's own tablet computer that was completely integrated with the rest of the system. No siloing.

Nope. The only way my iPad could replace my Mac, is by becoming a Mac.

i.e. adding a large external screen, a real fullsize keyboard and mouse/trackpad, ports for external peripherals, far better performance etc..etc..

yes,

In reality, I only use my laptop and desktop computer for four things.
Printing Checks, World of Warcraft, CS5 Photoshop, and as a place to hold my media for apple TV. As soon as Apple can arrange for me to print checks and CS5 equivalents and allow my appleTv to become a media server. I will drop all my computers without ever looking back.

It may not replace it for content creation, but for people who buy a whole computer just to go on the internet, a tablet will serve their needs just fine, I believe.

Even watching new kids shows that "look towards the future" such as Jessie on Disney Channel, and A.N.T. Farm all show people using tablets for general computing. (Rebranded iPads to boot, or iPads in cases).

I don't take much from these shows, but if anything I consider them to be accurate on tablet usage.

Yes and I am very much looking forward to it. It's only a matter of time before the iPad is every bit as powerful as a MacBook Pro and with every iOS update it becomes a more and more capable OS. I feel like it's about 80% of the way there for me right now. I think that last 20% is the most difficult part though. It's hard to imagine a Pro app coming to the iPad any time soon. A lot of things need to change. Maybe an iPad Pro or something like that will be the answer. I want the power of my Pro apps with the immersive interface of the iPad. I hope it's coming!

I assume almost all of us are using a MacBook, iMac, or whatever computer of your choice happens to be in addition to their iPad. Do you see a eventual point in time where you'll see the iPad completely replacing your home computing needs in total? Picking a iPad OVER a laptop rather than in addition to one?

Yes, within the next 2 years.

Think about it this way, by 2014 the iPad will be 4 years old. Extrapolating vaguely, it will have about 128-250GB storage, a many-core CPU and roughly the horsepower of a 2010 MacBook Pro.

Looking at the numbers, there will be roughly 200 million of them in circulation — about the same number of iPhones, iPads, and iPods combined in circulation today.

Well, let me tell you something.
I just sold my MacBook pro today, so starting from tomorrow, I will have no laptop, whatsoever, until the next refresh of iMac or Mac mini.
If I find myself to survive that long, I might even think about living with my iPad only! (although not being able to play hard core Starcraft will be a huge bummer for me.....)

Once I get a hi-res 13" full OS iPad that can be easily docked to connect to my keyboard and a larger display at home - maybe

The keyboard and larger display parts can already be done.

Bluetooth and next generation WiFi technology will eliminate the need to use a cable to connect the iPad to a monitor and other peripherals. I give it no more than a decade max before I'm lugging a tablet everywhere as my main device and, when I'm at work or home, have it "docked" wirelessly to a large monitor (or two or three) along with a nice full sized keyboard and a mouse.
