I think next year you will see it more and more. My company is using them now! We have to downloaded the RSA security fob from iTunes and use enhanced passwords on our iPads. So if the 3 adds more features by next year it will be the norm everywhere.
I think about this if you go to a Verizon store at least here in Dallas they use the iPad. And both the GOP and Dems are using The IPad to swipe donations. So yes is my vote

iPad as an add-on to my Mac? It's become the other way around.

My Mac is an add on to my iPad. I use the iPad for most of my daily tasks and my Mac mostly for work now.

First I said no, then I said yes, and now I say maybe.

When I got my iPad, my laptop, tower, game consoles, TV, and even my iPhone got a lot less of my love. I have no more magazines laying around my house because I'm subscribing to everything on my iPad now. I get better quality sleep at night because instead of falling asleep in front of the TV and then having to wake up and go upstairs to go to bed, I just do whatever I need to do on my iPad in bed and just set it down when I want to go to sleep. I was able to sell my laptop because I simply didn't need it anymore. I could also do without my consoles if I had to since I barely have the motivation to play them anymore.

For awhile I was thinking I never needed a full blown computer again--hell I could even do my job on an iPad if I had to. But I have this old Windows 7 tower still running in my basement. There's a very important reason why it's still around, and it's something that I don't think an iPad will ever replace. I have TONS of content that needs to be backed up and needs to exist in more than one place at all times. iCloud has taken care of my music and photos I suppose, but my wedding video, videos of my kids, important documents, etc. are invaluable to me. My computer runs backups to my 3 TB backup external drive every night. If my house were on fire, I could grab that external hard drive and leave and be perfectly confident that I have rescued my entire digital life.

An iPad just can't do stuff like that. Computers are still needed for specialized things. Tablets and smartphones can handle pretty much everything else. And if I had started my digital life with these types of gadgets, I probably WOULD only need an iPad. But I am not young enough where everything I've done in my life was done within the Apple ecosystem. I'm sure that teenagers and 20 somethings right now probably only need something as simple as an iPad and iCloud to keep all their stuff safe.

Why not replace your iPhone as your home computer? It's a mobile device.

And they're bound by the same limitations.

For example, I can't attach anything to this post.

The bigger screen of the iPad makes prolonged usage easier on the eyes. And means that you don't have to zoom in as often.

You can attach files in iCab:

This is something that I've been wondering about for a while, ever since I read this ( OK, it's not about an iPad, but it's still an interesting read ;) ).

To an extent, my iPad has replaced my MBP; I use it to VPN into work, admin servers / write code ( Panic's Prompt ROCKS ), and create documentation ( Pages, Elements ).

The only caveat to this, though, is that I have a Mini running Lion Server for webdav shares, and serving media.

Not for me either....The iPad is an addition, I can't use it as a SOHO device. It's a great device, but it's an extra, not a complete solution.

I agree. The iPad is great, but there are currently inherent limitations of the iPad, which, compared to a computer, make using the iPad cumbersome compared to using a Windows or Mac computer.

For example, I'd like to see the iPad being able to download most files and keep it in some form of Downloads folder, with built-in extraction support for compressed folders, and with that being able to open the relevant file within whatever app supports that file, as happens if you download a document via Safari right now.

I see. I'm respectful and appreciative of the iPad and the forums. I find going back and forth through different apps hard work, myself.

It's close to a PC though, almost like a new age PC.

Did you know that you can just copy a link of a picture from google, or other websites, and post it on this forum? I do this a lot. Take a look at my post about which iCarbons skin is better.

I know I can do that. You know...that's obvious. But when I want to make attachments on something other than pictures on somewhere other than a forum... then well.... You know.

Well, yea, I know that happens when you try to attach something else than pictures, obviously. But if attaching is what you do most of your day, then I dont know what else to say.

You can do this now with GoodReader.

The current situation with iOS reminnds me of the early days of Windows. A lot of stuff we take now as granted as being part of the OS needed to be done with 3rd-party utilities. For instance, zip/unzip functions were initially not provided out-of-the-box with the OS.

I once typed an essay on my iphone. Not even with a bluetooth keyboard.

Not saying it is feasible, but it can be done. :p
