Always close lid. Never shut down unless I have to (OS updates or something like that)

Shutting down is an abomination. If your OS forces you to reboot constantly you are trotting down the wrong path.

But seriously, rebooting and reloading apps puts more stress on the battery and shortens its lifespan. The same goes every time you have to reload apps. The best thing is just to keep things running in memory for the long run.

This should not even be on your radar unless your OS is grossly unstable.

I tend to just close the lid because it is easier then shutting it down and it is quicker turning on. It does use up more RAM since it is not starting from scratch, but I restart every once in a while when I install software updates, and that helps. I don't think there is a reason to shut down: sleeping doesn't waste a noticeable amount of battery life, with the rMBP and MBA line you get power nap and it starts up again in less than 1-2 seconds.

I use the same practice you do and it works great. Especially now that all my Macs have SSD's. There's no reason not to just let it sleep. Unless of course one is going to let it sit unused for a long time. But mine gets used daily.

I just found out this whole time I've been wasting seconds of my life by clicking the power button and selecting sleep THEN closing the lid.

If I add up all the extra seconds I've wasted a good amount of time.

What's up MacRumors. Quick question for you Macbook users...
When you have finished using your Macbook; Do you close the lid or do click the Apple icon and shut down? I am also wondering what happens if you never shut down and constantly close the lid?
Cheers, all.

I close the lid. I never shutdown except in cases of severe thunderstorms and I want to disconnect my electronics from the wall in case of a lightening hit. Or if I go on extended leave out of town.

I've never had any issues with my methods at all.

Because I keep it plugged into my external monitor most of the time I have to unplug it from the charger, unplug all USB devices, wait a few seconds, then close the lid to make it sleep. Pisses me off to no end to have to jump through all those hoops.

But yeah, I just close it rather than shutting it down. Only time I really shut it down is if I have to reboot it or the battery is very low or something.

Haha, next time you want to put your Mac to sleep without closing the lid, it's also quicker to press the S key while holding the power button.

Haha the reason I said I wasted so much time is I also close the lid after doing power > sleep. I never leave the lid open after putting it to sleep so might as well just close it :p

I close the lid, then unplug it and cover up the light, otherwise it bugs me all night.

It's funny you mention that. Some guy made a thread wondering how to shut it off and got swarmed by people saying it's ridiculous to mind it.

I agree in an extremely dark room that light gets pretty bright.

I WISH I could shut it off, but that's ok. It's the only thing plugged in in my entire room, so yeah, it is pretty irritating to see the light go in and out every second. I could just like, you know, turn around the other way, but then eventually I'll move back anyway while I'm sleeping and then it'll startle me and wake me up.

Gotta put electrical tape over it, doesn't leave any residue and doesn't let any light through, works well

I never shut down unless there is a problem or I am forced to due to an update or something.

I have had this laptop for 3-4 years now, and never once did this cause any problems.

Don't see the need to shut down unless you are traveling and want to save battery.

Of course I have an SSD as the main drive, if that matters.

You should also make a poll to save pages/time.

I don't think I have actually ever shut down my rMBP :) I do restart it once in a while, but it's because of bootcamp

I close the lid and forget about it.

I bought my first PowerBook back in 2005 and a MacBook Air in 2009 and I never shut either of them down. I only ever restarted when I needed to. Everything else was just sleep. Neither of those computers ever had any trouble.

I close the lid when I know I am going to be using it later during the day, but usually I turn it off when I go to bed. The rMBP has an SSD so it boots in less than 5 seconds anyway.

So running bootcamp is an abomination?

This is why Apple will never fix the shutdown bug. Nobody ever notices it but the few of us that have to reboot.

If the laptop isn't going anywhere (like into a backpack for a trip) then I usually just close the lid. If it is going somewhere, I shut it down before putting it into the backpack.

Although it's never happened to me, I've heard too many stories of people closing their laptop without shutting it down, and putting it into their backpack. Couple hours later they take it out, and it's hotter than a June bride on her wedding night.
