After the announcement of the 3GS this forum was ripe with "it's a minor upgrade" comments.

    Does anyone still believe that?

Superficially, yes. Under the hood, no. It is new hardware (much like the 1st gen iPhone was) that can hold up for 2-3 years.

The iPhone 3G is, in my opinion, was the minor update.

With doubling the previous highest storage capacity (16GB) to 32GB and doubling the processor speed, no, it's not superficial. It's not the google MyTouch with is purely superficial.

I am fully with this. The iPhone 3G was the baby step, the 3GS the big push forward in architecture.

it depends who you talk to. if you have the 3G i think its a minor update. the speed is nothing to be like "OMG" its so much much faster" and i could careless about a camera that is barely any better than the 2.0mega pixel andthe video and compass are not worth paying a new phone.

if you have a 2G then yes it is so worth it!

Not enough of an upgrade to move from 3G to 3GS IMO, I'll wait for dual core, background apps, maybe oled, better camera, who knows what else, but I'll wait.

    iPhone to the iPhone 3G:
    -3G
    -GPS
    -Slightly larger camera lens
    -Updated proximity sensor
    -New, tapered body

iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS
    -Support for faster 3G bands
    -Digital compass
-3 megapixel camera with autofocus, auto-white balance, and auto-exposure
-256MB of RAM (up from 128MB)
    -600MHz processor (up from 400MHz)
    -32GB model
-Voice Control, accessibility features, video recording, and video editing (more software than hardware, though)

Honestly, I think the 3GS was a bigger, more important update compared to the 3G. But the 3GS lacked a new form factor, so it seems like a minor update.

I don't say that it was a minor upgrade anymore, because that obviously irritates a lot of people, but I think it was a very standard upgrade. Meaning, a faster processor, improved software, larger hard drive are all great upgrades; but, those are the upgrades anyone would expect in a computer , phone, etc. I mean, they have to change something worthwhile for people to upgrade.

People on here seem to really rip on those who complain that the design wasn't changed, usually implying that cosmetic changes aren't very important. Let's be honest, aesthetics are a very large part of modern electronics (and especially for Apple). Plus, these changes sometimes do add better functionality/performance.

People usually point out that the only upgrades from the original to the 3G were: 3G, GPS, and new design whereas the 3GS boasted many more new features. Having 3G compared to Edge and GPS over what was used before are major upgrades for me that I wouldn't want to do without. The 3GS might offer more upgrades, but the only one that carries similar weight (for me) to 3G and GPS is the speed bump and maybe the camera/video. The other upgrades are very nice, but major? I don't think so much.

it annoys me when people don't realize that from a 2G yes it is a big update, but 3G users were happy, because we finally got 3G. apple won't even have the faster 3G bands everywhere until the new iphone is released prob lol

For me, the 3GS was HUGE improvement over my 3G. Being a techie, I can't stand slow electronics and the 3G just couldn't cut it.

I still think adding GPS to the 3G and bumping the cellular 3G speed were major update that trumps anything on the 3GS. And we also got the App Store when the 3G first came out. Nothing significant like that happened with 3GS, except maybe for push notification, but that should've been out before 3GS anyways. But don't get me wrong, I love all the features in the 3GS and have no regrets in upgrading.

Ditto. The slow/laggy nature of the 3G was very apparent to me and it is gone on my 3GS. even jailbroken and fully themed - no lag whatsoever

So the only new hardware feature in the 3GS is the compass. The rest is just improvements to existing features - decent improvments mind you.

The same could be said about the 3G, with the GPS being the only new feature.
