My iPad 4 have never been plugged into a computer, don't see a reason for it. I sync mine with the cloud.

I have an iPad 2 and have only backed it up before doing updates that I had to plug into iTunes to do.

My iPad is a computer by itself. I sync my files and documents to PDF Expert using cloud services but do not actually sync anything with iTunes.

Never, I actually never even synced my iPhones back when there was no iCloud. I never had problems, even back with an iPhone 3G never syncing.

I do due the the fact that my internet is capped at 4GBs so backing up and syncing apps through iCloud would use a lot of my limit.

I do, sometimes several times a day. I have he same iTunes library file copied onto two MacBooks so that I can sync between them and not lose anything. I sync music and apps on one and pictures from the other so each has backups.

To the OP: thanks for this poll, it's produced some interesting responses.

Since I use mine for a variety of purposes I sync it every time it's used without even thinking about it.

With two iPads and an iPhone I tend to sync both with iTunes and in iCloud...... When I get notification of a bunch of app updates, I first download into the computer, and then I sync each device individually (usually wirelessly). If I've added a bunch of new music recently I also will sync the old iPod Classic that I use primarily in the car, too. After everything has been synced with iTunes in the computer, I then also sync/backup to the Cloud as well. Covers all bases!

Not at all. Just use iCloud backup.

The only critical things are photos, contacts, emails, and notes. These all either sync to iCloud or MS Exchange. Since iCloud backup will automate re-installation and organisation of apps into folders on a replacement device, I have no worries.
