I do, just a plain-label multivitamin and broad spectrum mineral supplement in periods where I know I'm not eating well, say 1 or 2 weeks in every month... that's about it. So it's not every day and I do try to eat a lot of raw foods now and again...

But Hilary Swank also takes supplements, 45 tablets a day.

And I've recently been looking at ads on the trains on the London Underground, some for the most pseudo-scientifically named supplements that claim to do all sorts of magical things for eyes, skin, hair etc... have we gone too far?

...along with that pizza, eh BV ;) ?

Hilary Swank apparently needs to take more of those IQ increasing supplements, lol.

Everyone told me for all kinds of viruses, if you take Echineacia early on, you will either get better right away, or the symptoms of an illness would be reduced. I tried that nasty tasting stuff for several years, did not seem to make any difference I could tell.

Btw, the infomercial says P-diddy, Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys all got rid of their acne toote sweet, with Pro-Active designed by leading dermatologists, physicians. Must be great stuff with testimonials like that.

I take a generic-brand multivitamin everyday.

Me too, at least I try to, because I don't eat a good healthy meal everyday..but I notice zero difference between now and years ago when i was in college, at all kinds of junk, pints of B&R I.C. were scarfed down (not appetite enhancing drugs taken at the time ;) ) at the university cafes, slices of pizza, I could eat anything I wanted, never paid any attention to my weight...age catches up with your wasteline, lol.

Hmm... I'm just waiting for the body building types to list their supplements ;) Surely there must be 1 or 2 here on MR :D

OK, I'll confess. I'm a gym rat and lift three days a week. When I started, I took protein supplements and limited amounts of creatine. I take neither anymore, since I reached the goal I set for myself. Now I just lift to maintain.

If I know I haven't gotten enough calcium during the day I'll take a calcium supplement at night. I'll also take a multivitamin in the morning first thing before I eat anything. Considering how some vitamins/minerals block the absorption of others (i.e. too much calcium prevents iron absorption) I'm not exactly sure how much of it actually gets absorbed into my system. We've been trying to eat more veggies and fruits to help ensure we get our daily requirements.

I just started taking magnesium oxide and B2 (riboflavin) for migraines. I'll have to see how they work.

Since my marathon days in the 80's, I've bought in to the antioxidant, water-soluble thing and have taken 1000 mg of C, 400 I.U. of E d-alpha and a Centrum every morning. Aside from having some of the richest urine in town, I've had few colds over the years, and nice joints. :) :p

Do any of you find they actually have any effect?
I always like Australia's own Pan pharmaceuticals. Pan Pharmaceuticals was an Australian company and one of the largest contract makers of complimentary and alternative medicines in the world (which includes multivitamins). It supplied around 70% of Australia's demand and exported everywhere under dozens of different brands.

For months, if not years, for hundreds of their products they didn't put in any of the active ingredients, too much in others, or just made each batch up as they went along. Our therapeutic goods administration eventually caught up with them and kicked their butts, but over that time period not one single customer ever noticed anything. Their immune systems didn't shut down without their supplements, they didn't lack energy, they didn't become anaemic. Even without the active ingredients the pills still had their main effect - making people feel pro-active about doing something 'good' about their health.

not exactly a body builder but i do hit the gym 3x a week. currently i'm taking multivitamin+minerals w/o iron. i also take fish oil and drink a protein supplement called muscle milk light.

i must admit that i've been looking into additional supplements. that is because despite my nutritious diet, it took me more than 5 months to gain 9 lbs (which i'm struggling to keep!). however, it'll take me at least another 2-3 months to find a suitable supplement, cos i like to find out how the mechanisms work and what the effects are.

Yeah, my mummy used to give me orange-flavoured Vitamin C tablets. :D

Ha ha, I've been addicted to chewable vitamin C tablets since I was a little kid. To this day I keep a bottle of them on my desk and whenever I feel like eating candy or something else of questionable nutritional value I pop one of those instead. Sometimes I find myself taking 10-11 per day...
My mom works part time at a health food store (just so she can get discounts on her supplements!) And she told me about monatomic mineral supplements from Harmonic Innerprizes. They have several different products and each one produces different results. I included the URL because the company that makes them can explain what they do way better than I can. I've take Etherium Pink and am now taking Etherium Gold and I have noticed a shift in my moods since I've been taking them.

mmmm... Vitamin C tablets FTW!

I take calcium supplements since I'm lactose intolerant it's sooooo hard to get my daily dose especially since I'm lacking it so much.

Nope, I get all my vitamins and that. But when I get mouth ulcers or a sore throat I take a 1000mg Vitaman C tablet and that sorts it all out!

Runs in a family that little trick.

If you're not already, try to eat a jar of natural peanut butter a week. It'll supply you all the calories you need to gain/maintain mass without using expensive supplements. Make sure it's 'natural' and not full of sugar and salt. Great in milkshakes and home made protein bars.

Dammit I've got to get in on scams like this;

Harmonic Innerprizes, Aulterra; The DNA Activator 240 - 300mg $99.95! We believe the discovery of monatomic gold and the platinum group metals by David Hudson are rediscoveries of an advanced science understood by ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Israelite priests. Some physicists refer to it as "exotic matter"; monatomic gold has both superconductive and anti-gravitational properties.
A jar of antigravity! Scientists! Mystical cultures! And then the good old disclaimer;

i.e. they do bugger all. We'll make all the claims in the world on our product and it doesn't do anything. But we'll charge you $99.95 for it.

i think someone told me the same too, but i just munch on 1/2 - 1 cup of peanuts every night before bed. i'm kinda lazy to grind up stuff in the middle of the night and do the washing afterwards...

the same laziness will probably prevent me frm making my own protein bars, but how do you make them? (i just take promax honey peanut bars... they taste gooooood.) :)

my metabolism's a bit messed up so I have to take some supplement called eutroxig or something. blame it on my brain tumor. Plus i take a centrum every day that i remember

I tend to just try to maintain a stable and balanced diet, however.

Oh come now, you make this too easy sometimes. ;):p:D

I don't take vitamins or any other supplement on a regular basis. Other than a doctor's order, I will not go out and put minimally effective supplements in my body simply because there's an industry around to convince me I should. I asked my doctor about it, he said it's really just a comfort thing for people and that I am best served by the fruits and veggies I eat on a regular basis.

Do any of you find they actually have any effect?
Definitely. The last time I took a vitamin (more specifically, AirBorne) was a few years ago when I started getting a cold. Took the stuff religiously as per the instructions; within a few days I was bedridden with the flu. I've never felt sicker in my life. ...Haven't touched a vitamin since.

You know the saying, "if you cure it, it lasts 7 days; if you don't cure it, it lasts a week."

Took your bloody time about it.
Pick up the slack, people!

I think the only reason I still take vitamins is because they're Bassett's soft&chewy orange flavoured ones anyway. They remind me of being a kid.

I always heard it was the other way around. ;) :p

Seriously though, all that Airborne and stuff is junk. If the best of medical science can't cure a cold, what makes anyone think a school teacher can?

Well I just saw this thread now! Jeesh! :p:D

Vitamins aren't what I would call random crap. ;) Over-the-counter and certain (not all) prescription drugs are random crap.
(Even though your quote is about vitamins, and not herbal supplements, I never miss an opportunity to preach...) ;)

In many cases, "100% natural" herbal supplements are more dangerous than doctor prescribed prescription medicines.

I'd take a prescription drug (prescribed to me by a certified doctor, of course) before I'd take an herbal supplement any day.
