I think its best to buy a new laptop every year

Trade cost of apple care for depreciation of old laptop and a little extra for the new one

I have a personal policy of purchasing Apple Care each time I buy a new Mac. It's great to have if you need it, especially now that Mac laptops are more like sealed appliances.

I don't mind paying for it even if I don't use it. Finally, it's good to have when I give away the computer to family or friends. Upgrading every eighteen months, I go through a fair amount of new Macs.

iPhone's, iPads and other purchases I make without buying Apple Care.

Can I ask how places like amazon, and B+H Photo are able to sell applecare at a discount? Does apple really accept this? How do you link it to your notebook serial number after you have bought it?

Likely it's a loss-leader to get you to their site and/or they buy hundreds of units. Consider Office 365 - $99/year for Home Premium, or $99 via an in-app purchase through one of the apps and then Apple gets their $30 cut, or you can buy a SN via Amazon for $67.

I bought a "box" from B&H six weeks ago - the instructions to tie the AC SN to my rMBP were in the box, and in under 10 minutes my rMBP was covered for an additional 2 years. $244 instead of $349, and I'll do it again.
