I plan on keeping my 3GS too, unless there's some super high quality feature I cannot live without the new iPhone I won't be getting it if it looks like the prototype. If it ever dies I'll just go and buy a out of warranty replacement.
Hmmmmm so you're not diggin on the new design. I think it's a major improvement..... an A+ improvement you might say ;)

Since you have a 3G, you'll probably qualify for the full discounted price of the 4G when it comes out. Best thing would be to upgrade to it first, and if you don't like it, sell it (it will be in hot demand). You'll make more than enough money to pay for a 3GS.

My prediction is: you won't sell the 4G once you've tasted it's screen, speed, size, ...

Good point. And if anyone thinks they are NOT eligible, double check at http://www.ATTwireless.com. They have been rolling back upgrade eligibility dates. I wasn't supposed to be eligible until Sept, but now it says July. Others have reported June.

Yeah, god forbid an iPhone owner can't get the discounted price even though they signed a contract. AT&T must of learned from the last few years of bed wetting whiners, crying because they have no clue what a contract means. It was funny the last 2 years with the 3g and 3gs seeing all the posts about not being able to upgrade for the lower cost.

It's like car (or office equipment) dealers, buying out a lease. Sometimes, it's better to lock in their customers and recognize revenue sooner, and hold off on any competitive pressures. For example, if Verizon were to get a version of the iPhone before the holidays, or if Windows Phone 7 or Android devices on Sprint/Verizon start to look good, AT&T will want to have locked us in. It's good business.

And shaving 3 months off my upgrade eligibility doesn't effect my 2 year contract.

What

the 3GS isn't gay! not that there is anything wrong with that. :D seriously wait till WWDC then hopefully you can decide on your own, without asking a bunch of people you don't know.

You make an excellent point. I didn't think of that. That would be funny if I ended up liking it although I really think the 3GS is the best phone ever of all phones and even though it doesn't stack up to other phones on paper like the droid incredible and nexus one, it definitely beats those phones in other ways.

I think Apple is most definitely complicating the iPhone 4G & OS 4.0. Folders? No need.

I think the 3GS is the perfect blend of effecient performance, easy to use OS but very functional with tons of easy to use and uncomplicated features, & style.
