i have a first gen iphone and was wondering if the 3g phone has a better speaker for voice calls. im not talking the bottom speaker but the one on the top of the face of the phone. i honestly cant hear a damn thing out of that thing. i mean the main objection of the thing is a phone what good is it if i cant hear. im about ready to ditch this thing for a bb but im going to hold out a little while longer i keep hearing of an update coming out in the summer sometime so if its any better then ill upgrade to that otherwise im getting a bb.

Works good for what I want it to do... Like last night I was putting my new computer desk, chair and dresser together and I was listening to music via the iphone on the dock... worked good

I agree with the OP. My curve's speaker blows away my iPhone 3G's speaker. There is definately room for improvement.

While on the subject, the blackberry also has a far superior notifcaction profile system. You can set whatever sound you want, how many times that sound will go off, how many times the phone will vibrate, for each type of notification you get. Not only that, you can make different profiles, so you don't have to constantly change stuff for whatever the situation may call for. Have a max loud for the car, a profile for when you're in the office, for when you want vibrate only, for when you want no notification of any kind, etc. The possibilities are endless.

On the iPhone, it's non existant. You get a few stock ringtones and can add some through itunes. A few text tones, none can be added. One sound for everthing else. Gay.

Judging from the beta 3.0 threads, we are still waiting for a solid notification system on the iphone. Good thing we can jailbreak. It's nice to be able to tweak, the email or sms tones to my liking. Or making the vibrate length longer.

Ummmm,

1. Actually, for their price-bracket BOSE do make high quality speakers. Do you think that in the overall scheme of things, BOSE prices are high?! Haha, I guess you've never heard really high-end speakers then.

Ummm....no they don't. Bose sucks, period.

I dont think its "great" but I dont think its bad either...somewhere right in the middle. Its better than my touch's(2G) speaker, which is bassically useless...

wow you guys are freaking whiny

since when does apple claim to make high quality AUDIO PRODUCTS

if you buy a set of apple speakers because you think they make high quality speakers, then you are an equal moron as the person who thinks Bose Makes good speakers just because they are overpriced

When designing a product there is always a trade off, apple made a size-weight/sound quality compromise. Honestly I'm glad they did.

Connected to my speaker system at home/Headphones the iPhone sounds great.

1. We are not being whiny, we like to comment on the speakers and try to see how good they are and how they should be improved

2. There are no such thing as individual Apple speakers for sale.

.....see how good they are
For quality sound reproduction - they're not - and were never meant to be!

.......how they should be improved

They can't be! If you want reasonable quality, as has been said before, use a proper set of headphones or connect up to a decent system.

You can't possibly have a conversation in a moving car with the speaker phone. This is going to become more important as more and more states become "hands free" states.

I can't have a conversation while driving when I'm holding it to my ear, I can't hear anything on the other end.

If that new 3.0 phone isn't louder I'm selling my 1.0 and getting a blackberry because this thing is worthless.

I mainly use the iPhone for texting - if I had to make lots of phone calls in different environments then I would've ditched it long ago.

The iPhone speaker is poor. I can't hear my phone ring when it's in my pocket and I'm walking along next to a busy road.

It's way to soft. But I can't see the iPhone getting any thicker so I think I'll trade the speakers for the slimness of a supermodel.

As long as Johnathan Ive can fit all the updated hardware in the same or slightly slimmer design as the iPhone 3G...I'm down. But thick and clunky Nokia n95'ish styling...no thanks, we've already got Nokia to do that for us, when we want style we're supposed to turn to Apple. However, at the rate in which technology advances, there shouldn't be any reason why companies couldn't continually upgrade their components with each new generation of their product.

2. What does audio-output to speakers have to do with the speaker on the iPhone itself? You are just waffling verbiage for the sake of it.

Dude, let me intervene for a moment and speak from true experience, OK? I've got 5200sq ft home with a 46 speaker BOSE lifestyle home system professionally hardwired through out the rooms in the house, seamlessly built/wired into the walls...speakers outside, each room with the ability to control its own music, hard drive....the whole 9 yards....

and even I agree that BOSE is nothing special at all. Neither are those silly beats by Dre headphones. Total crap. As far as headphones go, there are only 3 companies you need to know; Graddo, Sennheiser, and AKG. For home audio go with Bang & Olufsen...I wish I had.

The thing is, Bose speakers aren't terrible ( you can't sell terrible) they are just too expensive for what you get ( you can spend the same money or less and have an incredible sound system)

I hate having calls over speaker phone, any speaker phone. My problem's never been so much with the speakers though as the fact that the person on the other end can never hear me :( My dad makes loads of speaker phone calls on his Blackberry though

This thread made me realise that I don't think I've ever heard my 2G iPhone "ring". Mine is constantly set to vibrate, and I only ever hear the ringer if I'm listening to my iPod when someone calls.
