I'm writing this on my iPhone 4 as we speak.

I'm still nothing but impressed with my iPad screen.

Will have agree to disagree.

So you honestly don't think that the typefaces for reading eBooks are a bit grainy/jaggy and would look nicer if they were smoother?

I really hope that they improve the display. It's one of the areas that they can really improve on. It's a bit too pixelated.

When the iPad first came out, people raved about the excellence of the display. Now that we all have iPhone 4's, we want more out of the iPad.

Nevertheless, I hope that the next iPad has a higher density display. I know it would take huge sums of money and a very powerful processor to get a Retina Display on the iPad, but I think we can do better now, within the marketing profile for the iPad.

SOME people raved about the display.

Or to put it more accurately some people removed their brains and said it was the best thing on the planet ever. Whilst other more honest people (even from day one) said it was nice, but it was a git grainy for text.

1024x768 is not that detailed a screen, say what you like, and it's not enough to be able to smoothy render small typefaces without zooming in to make the font larger and hence use more pixels.

That's not an opinion it's a cold hard fact.

It's Ok, it's Adequate, but it could be better.

I'm pretty sure that the retina display in the ipad can be done, however, it most likely will become an issue of efficiency. Figure that after 1 year of full blown production of the ipad at the current pricing levels would drive economies of scale in chip production, tooling, etc. to bring the overall cost of production way down as the R&D budget is covered through sales. This will allow additional pricing leeway to allow for more expensive components to be used and to keep the price point static (or slightly increase).

Apple has proven that the retina display can be manufactured in quantity with quality. One could assume that the technology would scale and allow for the production of physically larger panels with the same quality and quantity. Again, adding in expected volume, these would come down in price dramatically on the 6 million - 8 million production number per year, to be feasible for the ipad.

The main issue is efficiency. I believe the current GPU couldn't drive the number of pixels on a 9.7" panel. So, option 1 would be to boost the output of the current chip to those levels (not sure they could). option 2 is to revise the GPU with new tech (not sure the time frame works). option 3 is to utilize parallel processing with multiple GPU's. If Apple could use 2 or 4 GPU chips to slice the screen into sections with each GPU taking the processing for that section, that would most likely allow for the larger screen.

But alas, the decision will most likely come down to: Can any of this be done and IMPROVE battery life. If they cannot extend the battery life, a more dense screen won't make it off the drawing board.

I'd say perhaps a higher res screen will come in iPad 3. They kept the iPhone's resolution for a long time, I can imagine that they will do the same for the iPad. I remember seeing on a website that the ppi on the iPad is quite a bit lower than even the iPhone 3GS. If it can get at least to the 3GS ppi, then it'll be much better. Reading text on the iPad vs. the 13" MBA is a huge difference.

Ipad resolution

I honestly think the Ipad is a dream to read on. I hate reading on my iphone4,
too small to read on and having to changing the page every second and a half. Could the resolution be better? sure. Does it need it? Not really. I know many of you will think this blasphemy, but, I think the ipad is not grainy or pixelated or jaggy. Unless I am using my Iphone and my ipad together and comparing reading, I would never think about the difference in resolution.

On another note, I wish people would stop talking about retina display, like it means something, it is a marketing term made up by Apple. It never existed prior to the Iphone4 coming out.

Sense.

Agreed, I also feel the same about "FaceTime"

It's video calling as have been around for years and years on mobile phones. Nothing new at all.

I agree with a lot of the posters above that the iPad display is very good right now. I would say they would probably keep the same screen for cost reasons and perhaps push it up to be able to display 1080P for movies.

I'm a bit split on the what I want the next gen iPad to be - I'd like it cheaper to recommend to friends and family but for myself I'd like it to be faster and more features.

It would be great if they had the lower model at $350 price point, plastic unibody case, same specs display and for us apple fans, the real deal with glass/aluminum case, higher res display, cameras, faster processor, etc for the usual apple tax prices which I'd be willing to pay.

Exactly, let the low rez crowd stick with their fuzzy and jaggy screens, but let the rest of us get what's really worth having.

Plus, i know that if they bump up the resolution, my current games will be obsolete and the devs will want me to buy new versions that support the higher res screen. That's exactly what happened on my iP4.

I think the screen is fine for the viewing distance. Yeah, sometimes i hold it closer than normal and can see the pixels, but so what.

So they shave $5 off their costs and drop the selling price by $150? Brilliant marketing move.

I don't think you realize the hardware and software and cost implications of that. Yes it would be great if they could feasibly bump up the resolution, but this would create immense headaches for hardware engineers trying to make panels with good enough quality control to keep whiners at bay, make a graphics unit that could power the display without melting the case or cutting the battery life in half.

Then developers would have to deal with making apps for that big of a resolution (pain in the butt), while keeping them a reasonable size (not going to happen with 4x the pixels, assuming double pixel density)

The display is already a good bit of the iPad's cost, as IPS panels are pretty expensive. Try doubling the pixel density and think of how expensive that will be. Price tag would easily triple or quadruple.

My point is that you can't simply throw money at something and expect the quantity of cash to equal perfect product. It will take development. I honestly wouldn't look for a higher resolution iPad for a few years.

That's what Intel have done for years.

Intel sells a commodity. They create their own economies of scale. Apple has to rely on 3rd party suppliers and, in case you haven't noticed, the dollar is once again in decline which means that any economies in scale that Apple has realized from volume sales are disappearing (and manufacturing costs are also rising). I just love how everyone is an armchair CEO.

I think Apple will increase the resolution of the screen.

Hitachi have shown a 7" screen with 1600x1200 resolution to give 302ppi. And Casio have displayed a 4.8" 1920x1080 458ppi screen. The race is on to provide high-resolution-density displays in various sizes. Apple cannot be left behind after trumpeting the benefits of the retina display.

You go to the Apple store and the iPhones pop out at you and the iPads do not.

I don't think there is a choice now but to retinize the iPad.

I pad screen looks good

I don't think the graphics look bad at all on the I Pad. I was going to hold out for next generation but I just went ahead and bought the cheapest I Pad. Sell it before the 2nd Gen comes out. The I Pad is awesome. Plus if you have a I phone 4 you already have face time. So who cares if your I pad has it?

I completely agree with you.

Also It's only just been out over 6 months in the UK so it's funny to see people clambering for an upgrade. It's a beautiful device as a whole and Im more than happy.

Also considering the galaxy is the 'competition' ( or the most compared at any rate) I was under the impression the screen wasn't as good. In fact is there a tablet out right now at a similar price with a better screen? Is the rim tablet going to sport a better screen?
