Hey guys one thing I've noticed lately is that there has been no mention of iPhone firmware 2.3... not even the beta. Could Apple be holding it back or are they preparing something with new features for tomorrow?

Would they have to release it early to developers to test their apps on? Or should there always compatibility with future iPhone OSs?

**Finger crossed for Copy+Paste***

It might be possible that Phil announces 2.3 and gives a release date in the future, but I don't really see it being released tomorrow. Mainly because there hasn't been a peep anywhere about a 2.3 beta being distributed to devs. Unless the NDA finally managed to keep a FW beta completely under wraps, which I highly doubt, there won't be a release at Macworld. There is no way Apple would push out a new firmware without going through a couple of betas first.

I agree with John Gruber. Based on the fact that no one has heard anything about 2.3, they're probably done with version 2 and are now working on 3.0, but it won't be out tomorrow.

We may get a peek at it, but that's it.

Who says that there needs to be a version 3 being worked on right now? I suspect one more update for 2 and then an upgrade to 3. But what could go into a new iPhone to warrant version 3?

I suspect that we're getting close to needing a new organizational structure beyond swiping pages. With the number of apps people are downloading, something has to change.

This is just my guess, but I think that something that changes the iPhone interface so drastically will warrant the "3.0" number all on its own.

That's possible. I think we're bound to see more UI changes now and not so much fundamental changes in the device.

2.3 may end up being released on when the iPhone goes to 32GB's, which is most likely February since that's when it got it's last capacity bump.

I could see this happening. But what new features? Copy and paste? Video? Stability is pretty much there...

Copy/paste, flash, Push (not that "push" they've been giving us), and a little more stability is always good (even if not needed).

Well, actually copy/paste and flash seem more likely for the 3.0 update.

No, first betas go out, then the actual thing. I can see 2.2.x (where x stands for a number from 1-9) to add stability to the OS.

However, a surprise would be nice like having finally native video recording

2.3 hasn't been released as a beta to SDK developers. We won't be seeing 2.3 tomorrow.

They'll probably talk about 2.3 tomorrow, and release it in February/March.

It might be announced, but I highly doubt it will be ready to go tomorrow.

Are you visiting the same websites that he is? It's not always the browsers fault you know.

A friend was checking his facebook tonight under safari, it crashed three times. It even crashes under the native facebook application. Next excuse?

Facebook is filled with tons of code.
The apps for websites are made to be watered down and not take up as much ram.

It is advertised as the 'real internet' not the 'watered down' internet. Next.

The native facebook application is a facebook problem; not an apple problem. I concur on that note.

To stay on topic, I would love to see a 2.3 preview tomorrow at the very least. Hopefully copy/paste and stability included.

NO. The app.facebook, one in the app sotre, is watered down.
I was saying that's why the facebook app doesn't crash as much as when you go to the facebook website.

I have actually found Safari to be very stable, maybe you could provide additional examples of sites that are crashing it.
