Lots of great responses here. I do have Apple Care Plus since I'm on the iPhone upgrade program, so worst case I pay the fee if I break it, and then I get to get another new phone in a year. I might order a really cheap case just to have, but really thinking I'll try going naked for a while. I did watch a durability test on YouTube and the iPhone Air was VERY rugged.

For a long time I was a caseless person, then one day, I had an oopsie moment, and the phone landed directly on the area where protection is its flimsiest. So now, i always use a case. Even if you are very careful in how you handle your phone accidents still happen. Sometimes a chain of events is set in motion, and through no fault of your own, damage is done.

So while going without a case is certainly your prerogative, and I’m not here to tell you are wrong, and should definitely use a case, **** happens.

Everyone is different. The last time I dropped a phone sufficient enough to merit replacement was May of 2022. More than 3.5 years ago.

That was a drop from chest height on to solid concrete. Phone landed on it's back and the Apple employee remarked that he'd never seen such a shattered back before. Impact was so hard that it cracked the screen from the inside.

Despite that, here I am 3+ years later with the replacement phone never having been in a case and no damage.

As I indicated above, both times I had to replace a phone I had a runny nose and was using Benadryl. I won't say that I have never dropped a phone outside of those two times, because I have. But in general the rules I have for myself protect my phones.

For you that one drop was sufficient to warrant a case for any phone you use for the rest of your entire life (I'm guessing). Not me. Both times for me were aberrations and not a sign that the universe says I need to use a case. ;)

I haven’t broken a smartphone in the 18 years I’ve had them, some day one of my frequent drops will break one but then I’ll just get a new one from insurance or on my own. Making my user experience worse (bigger and heavier phone) for years just to not have to replace it on those rare occurrences seem ridiculous to me.

Agree. Only time I put a case on is when I’m traveling somewhere that immediate replacement options aren’t a given. Like into the wilderness or overseas.

I put my Air in a glasses pouch whenever I’m not using it/putting it down. That way I can enjoy it unadulterated, but it’s at least SOMEWHAT protected when not in use.

I did debate it because I’m not clumsy and I don’t drop phones but the side rails will eventually get swirl marks up with daily use and taking in and out-of-pockets because they’re highly polished so I’ve put an Apple silicon case on it. It hardly adds to the bulk
That's what I've done also. The Apple silicon case allows you the appreciate the weight and beauty of the phone without the risk of going without a case. I would not be happy with even small scratches on the phone or titanium sides.

They make a silicone case for the air?

Also, if you can’t see the sides, how will you know if they’re scratched?

I'm going to be upgrading to the iPhone Air in a couple days once I'm eligible through Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program (which includes Apple Care Plus). Since I have always been a case user, I'm afraid if I try to use the Air naked, that I'm going to drop and damage it. I don't drop my phone very often, but when I do, I'm very glad I have a case on it.

So how do you caseless people deal with a drop or accidental damage? Do you just make a claim with Apple Care Plus and pay the fee (I don't even know what the fees are since Ive never had to use it).

Or maybe I just get a camera lens protector and a magnetic ring/stand for the back since I love the folding magnetic ring that's part of the case on my current iPhone 16 Pro Max. Then a super minimal bumper type of case, just not the Apple bumper, that one doesn't intrigue me one bit.

Idk what to do. I dislike the idea of getting a super slim phone, then bulking it up with a case and screen protector, but also don't want to ruin it.
iPhones have tolerated drops very well for years now. I beat on my iPhones Pros pretty hard and they do just fine caseless, averaging a drop to concrete at least once a month. It looks like Apple did a good job of making the Air a durable phone, like a thin iPhone 16 Pro with its elegant titanium alloy frame.

I have a 17 Pro Max in Silver. I love the way the phone looks and feels without a case. I'm pressing ahead with enjoying the phone caseless, and have no plans to buy a case.

The smooth corners make it so nice to hold. There is no phone case that can continue to offer that experience.

Anyone else planning to roll caseless with the 17 PM?

My coworkers 16 Pro was bumped off her regular height desk, hit a pergo floor, and the back shattered...

So for me, I'll stop using a case when Apple stops using glass.

lamerica80 may be exaggerating -- but not by much, if at all. You may not have seen someone say his exact words, but there have been plenty of people in this thread who have made it quite clear that they place all of their faith in AppleCare -- at least one of whom has expressed the apparent willingness to commit insurance fraud to get a new phone, if he happened to scratch up his phone badly enough. Here is just a small taste of those commentaries:

There are of course plenty more comments in the same vein -- but I'll just stop there, as I doubt that anyone else has managed to top the shear audacity of hch720's posts. 😲
The assertion was that people think they can get a new phone every time they get a scratch. None of these quotes say or imply that (with the exception of hch720 and possibly RRC).

I don't think that having faith in AppleCare implies that either. I have AppleCare for all my major devices because it is insurance and if I accidentally do something boneheaded I am covered.

So far I’m caseless except for a screen proton the front and a glass protector on the back. I did order 2 skins from QSkinz because I like to change the color of my phone.

What's a good case for the blue phone?
I personally love the blue techwoven case. Amazing fit, good material that doesn’t show fingerprints, great color 🙂

I don’t like scratches or dings on any of my tech, which is why my MBP is covered with a dbrand skin and all my iPhones use a screen protector plus some sort of thinner case. That is up until the titanium 16PM which has been so nice to use mostly without a case, but with a Suti phone back here and there.
But if I end up getting the 17PM it’s going back in a case mostly because of how much softer aluminum is over titanium. I might change my mind when seeing what people report after a few weeks.

I have a silver 17PM and have been caseless for a week, while waiting for my Alpine Orange Süti phone back and skins from QSkinz. I have a glass protector on the back covering the camera plateau and the bottom portion of the phone. I’m also rocking a screen protector. I have been extra careful in how I handle my phone and where I sit down, especially because it’s now aluminum and not titanium anymore. So far no scratches *knock on wood. I also have AppleCare+.

I think I’d go with the Techwoven case this year if it weren’t like putting a sweater on it. No, I’m going bumper case to maximize the vapor cooling on the Pro.
Interesting, I looked on Amazon for “17 Max Bumper” but could hardly find any of them that leave the back exposed. The few that do seem to have terrible reviews. Is there a bumper you recommend / are using for the Pro series? 🙂

Do you carry it in your pocket or a bag?
