I just Siri almost everyday, especially in the car because I get a lot of messages during the day as I drive. I also use it as a calculator, it comes in very handy.

I use it for reminders, figuring out traffic, weather, dialing, texting, and a couple of other things. I'm amazed at how good it is at transcribing text to speech, but is anyone else annoyed that you can use it only to reply to new (unread) text messages?

Not once. Its too obnoxious and doesnt interest me in the least.

I view it as a worthless gimmick that most probably appeals to those who think its cool & like to show off. Siri makes them feel special & important.

Kind of like seniors you see walking around with a blue tooth earpiece on. it's a damn joke.

hmm interesting. either way i feel its a gimmick as well. the only thing i would use it for is to call someone. but i just turned it off because there is no sense in it taking up cpu cycles just for being able to call someone or play music with my voice.

I put my phone in airplane mode and siri won't even allow me to speak.

Maybe it will work differently with no signal, rather than connections off.

Thats correct - Siri needs a data connection of some sort, eithor 3G or Wifi as it interacts with the Apple servers to determine what you are saying and thus what you want. No data connection means no voice control at all

yea so useless for me 8.5 hrs/day 5 days a week

oh well, the improved camera and speed still make it one hell of a phone

It's biggest problem(I use siri on daily basis) is that it needs to realize that for simple stuff, it should not try to connect to siri database(wherever this is being ran at) and run from it's iOS 5 within the phone.

Simple **** like " call my wife " should not need internet connection.
That really is piece of **** design.

Apple is really great and superb at lot of **** but some of the stuff they do, you wonder they have some stupid ass XXXX sitting in the back and making decision.
How do you drop a ball on stuff like this?? Text message should be instant action.

It clearly saves time for you if you want to type long messages. For example if you had to text something like "Meet us at the restaurant at 6 and don't forget the present" then Siri will make sending that text a lot easier.

Plus this is naturally the only way people should text while driving. Everyone at one time or another has composed a text while at the wheel. There is really no excuse not to use Siri for this.

true but what if you are in an area that doesn't have data signal but has voice. she then can't connect to the servers to transcribe your message but you can type it out and send it.

also i think the connections to the servers go against your monthly data access and for someone without unlimited data (which thank goodness i have) that would be a problem

i'm not saying siri isn't awesome. she is really cool. but the practical application isn't there. she is useful for responding to a text while driving or making a hands free call. but just to check the weather. i'd rather just click on the weather button than ask my phone and her basically pull up the weather app. or for a web search just open safari or go to the spotlight search than say: bing bing "search apple iphone" and then her pull up the list of sites that i still have to click on.

I use Reminders and set app appointments every day.
Also use Siri to see what she will say next few times a week.

Yeah I sometimes used the voise control to play music before at work. Alas the steel, concrete and wires here wont allow me to get a signal, so while at work I cant use voice control at all.

I wish that it defaulted to the old control for basic stuff when there is no signal.

Siri is fun to use but it does give me a lot of trouble. For example, can any of you dictate the following:

(6.33 grams)*(1 mol/180.02)

(13.3 kJ per mol) * (6.022*10^23/1mol)

I have a difficult time getting Siri to recognize exponents. Also Homonyms give siri a hard time also:

Patients
Patience

Things like this.

Also, one thing that Siri Can't do is turn all recurring alarms for weekdays or weekend ends. It can only turn on a single alarm. For example, M-F I have 5 recurring alarms set going from 4:45 to 5:15. Weekends are from 8:45-9:15. Sometimes I turn off a some of these alarms, but need them to be turned back on. I almost wish I could put Siri into a learning mode to type or tell it specific things to learn.

Agreed. My wife is sick of me being a spelling Nazi and now using Siri I'm a shocking speller. "I'm going over their to see them to. By" Argh. It can only get better, and I guess it will learn as we go on, as the English language is horrid compared to others.

That would be perfect. Adjust pronounciation, teach it additional words etc, all local, but maybe they get passed to Apple for final approval and addition to the full Siri system

^^

For me the big thing here is that I live in Hawaii. Siri has a hard time understanding almost all of the local words that are used here (like names of places or locations). Unless I speak extremely slow and stress certain syllables, it won't pick it up

Try asking Siri to find some Pho (pronounced Fa). That was a fun yet frustrating experience that resulted in me just asking for Vietnamese food

Be interesting to see if this is a novelty or if it's the next big thing.

Primarily for texting the wife while on the road. Sometimes I use it for dictation when I'm too lazy to type. ;)

searching the web? really? but she doesn't read out the results so whats the point of that. i guess other than not having to open safari and type

Nailed it. I'm driving, need to google something. It's much easier to search without having to input text on my own.

I think "practical" is in the eye of the user in this respect. Every feature isn't going to be useful 24 out of 24 hours a day. I mean, there could be 4 days I don't use my camera but it doesn't mean it's not great to have with me when I want to use it.

And I think that Siri will get better...especially if we think of Siri as new with the ability to learn. I don't think anyone can understand, no matter how simple one may think it is to themselves, every one even in their own country. I mean, really, how many know what Pho is...I don't even know what Pho is.

I think that as more people use Siri it is going to just grow. I'm looking forward to getting 4S soon, in the mean time I'm just reading about everyone else getting to use it.

daily for reminders, appts, making calls, web searches and some general dumb questions because I like playing with Siri.

I think Siri's usefulness really depends on your location: In the office - hell no, people will think you're a tool. At home - sure, the kids love it! In the car - absolutely, to do all I can while traveling.

I actually had no expectation of using Siri given the fact that the last "Voice Command" feature Apple rolled out was an utter joke. However, in the car while driving, Siri is indispensable.

I use a bluetooth in the car (since it's the new law) and I find now I can read my texts (or have them read to me), reply to text, send a new text, send email and make calls without removing the phone from my pocket. It's awesome! Best part is, it actually works! I honestly never thought I'd use Siri but she's proving to be a great companion in the car.

i get that. but once she pulls up the browser you have to pick up your phone and read the page while driving. rendering it useless. i do see the use in dictating text and calling people. especially since i have bluetooth built into my car.

one problem i've found with siri is that i have preview turned off for my texts. siri will not read my texts to me with preview turned off. thats a flaw i never noticed before

i didn't think id use it at all, but find myself using it all the time.

i just don't use it in front of people, i feel pretentious doing that. but i use it in my car to send/read texts or to call people, at home to set my reminders/alarms, and on my desk to text/call people
