Not. My photos are around 2TB, then there are the movies, the music....etc. I would not fit on a 3TB spinning drive...much less a 1TB SSD.

On my rMBP's SSD I have boot/OS/apps, and the minimum data for email and safari. I have no need to travel with data that can sit easily on a RAID pair at home where it is backed up. The rest of my SSD space is used for photo collection during 2-3 week trips. Once I get home and complete the culling and editing, the finished photos are move to the external drives to make room for the next trip.

But I only have a 147MB of photos...so it's not a problem for me.

Congrats. The you many not need an extra data/library drive. Just be sure to use Time Machine to backup your only drive to an external drive and/or cloud storage system.

I got rid of my iMac a couple of months ago, and now run my 13" rMBP alongside the Monoprice 27" monitor and M-Stand from Rain Design. I do plan on getting another iMac, if/when there is a refresh this year

Yes. I have 2012 MBP 13" and a 2013 rMBP 15" as my system. I use my 13 one as my workhorse for torrents/tunes/various other stuff. second monitor etc. 15 as a video editor and main screen.

Hope you have those external drives backed up too. RAID isn't necessarily backup.

Fully understood. RAID 1 is for high availability (protection against a disk crash). It is definitely NOT a substitute for backups. Both my internal SSD and the external RAID set are backed up by Time Machine. When I am on the road I backup to an external 1 TB SSD. The external SSD has fast I/O speeds and eliminates the risk of a crashed HD.

Using rMBP as a desktop

I've been using laptops-only for almost a decade now, and haven't ever needed to attach them to a screen or anything else.

Time has come where I actually do need a screen and got that new LG one. Anyway, I'm curious to know if the rMBP is capable of running an external screen 24x7.

My understanding is that the dGPU is used to power the external screen. Which creates heat, which then affects all the other parts.

Does anyone here use the RMBP as their desktop workstation? Or do those people go for the MP's?

The rMBP has more than enough juice for me to do everything I need to do, including portability which is huge, and the ability to work during power outages too. I don't want to give that up, but also don't want to kill my rMBP by using it as a desktop 95% of the time with the dGPU running the external screen.

Any thoughts on this? I'm sure it's pretty common. Guess I just need some reassurance this won't kill my 3000 dollar computer :\

You can certainly use a MBP as a desktop-replacement, running it most of the time with an external display. You just need to remember to run on battery regularly, to keep it healthy, as it's bad for a battery if you leave your MBP plugged in all the time. You're not going to harm your GPU by using it, as that's what it's designed to do.

I use my retina MacBook Pro as my primary machine and it's certainly capable, even with the built in display thanks to the ability to change the resolution to just about anything you want. Whilst I do usually run it in the 'best for retina' mode and resize things as I see fit, it's certainly nice to be able to run it at what looks like 1920x1200 for example.

I have ran the machine with an external monitor on a few occasions, but the retina display is so nice I'm put off it a bit haha.

Yeah, me too. I haven't had a desktop in years. They take up too much room which just doesn't fly anymore. These laptops are so powerful now too. I donnish a monitor either, just my MacBook Pro!

I like having an all in one device. I'm a big fan of that. In fact I have started a thread on here discussing whether or not the late 2013 MBPr 15" with 2.6/16/1TB could replace an Xbox One.

We had concluded that the Xbox One is better for gaming graphics wise which to me is the most important thing when it comes to gaming which is why I'm sticking with my 13"

Point is, if I could use my MBPr as a TV, computer, and Xbox One, I would be the happiest man ever. I just love the idea of an all in one device.

Well obviously rMPB is very very far from competing with gaming desktop PCs, but I doubt it's worse than XBOX given the fact that XBOX runs most games at 1280x720 and many of them capped at 30FPS. The only thing possibly stopping from using it as a substitute to xbox would be poor game engines optimization for windows.

I tried. didn't work out for me. Got a nMP as a desktop because I need to Facebook on my bed as well as when I'm sitting down doing work on the desk. So lazy to reconnect to my monitor and placing on a book arc. :(

The games that are at 720 definitely run at 60 FPS. Also, Xbox One is getting updated to the same MHz as PS4 so it'll be almost as good as the PS4.

Dude are you serious? You are one lucky guy. I wish I could justify a nMP for Facebook

When you use it closed, aren't you afraid of messing the display? Cause of the heat.

No. This was originally a concern of mine but after doing the research of a Ph.D I found out that the head comes from the hinge so does not touch the screen.
