I am wanting an Apple Watch, but I understand sleep tracking isn't great on the device. I wear my Fitbit to bed each night to track sleep AND to vibrate me awake in the morning. These two things are important to me.

Do any of you utilize your AW this way? If so, What sleep tracking app do you use? Are you happy with it? Also, do you use the AW to vibrate you awake in the morning?

When do you typically charge your Apple Watch if you sleep with it? Do you charge it every day or every other day?

Thanks!

I sleep with it (S3) nightly. The sleep tracking is not as good as it was on my Fitbit Ionic, but with AutoSleep and AutoWake it comes close. I charge it during showers and then either when I am having my morning cup of coffee or in my car on the drive to work (30 minutes).

Do you have the Apple Watch vibrate you awake? how is that function? Do you regret not sticking with a Fitbit device?

I do have it vibrate to wake me up using AutoWake - the Ionic never woke up me up vibrating so it is a improvement there. There are times I miss the Ionic, but overall I enjoy the Apple Watch more as it is much more capable for different things.

The Ionic was more comfortable to me to wear with their sports band and I think the Fitbit handled some things better: dashboard/website/app is much better than Apple Health and the auto fitness detection was better without requiring you to start an activity. Otherwise most fitness things are about equal.

Yeah I am in the process of trying to determine if I go out and get the newly released $150 Fitbit Charge 3 or a 44mm Apple Watch. I know it's Apples to Oranges but I need to figure out if the AW is going to be worth it. I prefer the look of the Apple Watch hands down, but the battery life, sleep capabilities and price of the Charge 3. Decisions, decisions!

I was on the fence after wearing the Ionic for a year and using other Fitbits for years before that. I think the AW is worth it (though I decided to buy a S3 on sale a few weeks before the S4 announcement and do not regret saving $$ in doing so). I am still getting over the steps not being the main data point anymore - but overall I am happy making the change. Everything is not all neatly wrapped up into a single interface and it takes a couple/few apps to get it done. But the functionality is heads and shoulders above where Fitbit currently is.

I wear mine to sleep... but I have 2 (ok... now 4 since I still have my 2 series 0). I wear one and the other is on the charger. in the evening I switch them out.....

I charge as soon as I get home in the evening.
It takes about 60- 70 min usually.
I use Pillow app with premium purchase.

I sleep with my watch and charge it once I’ve completed my stand achievement early evening. It takes less than an hour to top up and then it’s good to go.

Once I get a new watch, I’m currently using an Apple Watch 3, the older watch will become my sleep monitor.

OK so quick question... is there a definitive best sleep tracking app? How much do most of them cost? I take it none of the good ones are free?

I've been fairly happy with an app call SleepWatch. I find the results to be close to what I'd expect. There is a free version with the option to upgrade. I tend to charge first thing in the morning while I get ready for the day but may go to a two watch setup when my 4 arrives.

I also use SleepWatch with my Series 3 Watch. I charge in the morning and can get 2 days + on a charge (I don't use LTE much and only monitor my walking, not my pool exercise, with my Watch). I can easily charge my Watch while I shower or drink coffee or read MacRumors.

As to its usefulness, I found the SleepWatch graphs of my sleep illuminating--and concerning--as they showed all of the periods and episodes of wakefulness I was experiencing in graphic form. The graphs were helpful to my primary care physician and I'm having a sleep study this week.

I have an LTE Series 3. I had to buy an app (AutoSleep) to get sleep tracking but I love it. I’ve never used a Fitbit so I don’t really have that experience to compare it to, though. But the alarm vibrates in the morning and that is actually enough to wake me (before I press snooze 2 times lmao). I charge my watch while I shower and get ready for work in the morning (about 45 minutes) and when I shower at night after the gym, though I’ll usually let it charge until full at this point. I’ve never had it die on me or even get a low battery notification, I honestly don’t even know what that notification looks like. Lol

I also use Sleep Watch.....uses only 7% a night on my S4. I usually take my watch off when get home from work, and put it on the charger with my cell phone. So it's 100% when I'm ready for bed, down to 93% in the morning, then a quick top off back to 100% when I'm in the shower and getting ready for work.

I charge mine when I shower in the morning and usually throw it on the charger an hour or two before bed. One trick is to put it on theater and airplane modes when you go to bed. Theater mode keeps the screen from coming on during sleep so it doesn't disturb your partner and saves battery, as does airplane mode. No need to receive notifications while sleeping :)

Thanks for the tip. And hello from Cincinnati as well :)

So which sleep app detects when you actually fall asleep on its own... in place of you actually hitting a “start” button ?

It doesn’t take long to charge up with AW3 and AW4 these days. I put my AW4 on the charger late in the evening and let it charge whilst I do the bathroom things, a pre-bed drink etc. Then back on when I’m ready to sleep. In the morning, on the charger on waking and back on the wrist when getting dressed for the day. All good.

Mine is charging right now. I will put it on when I go to bed. I use AutoSleep, but have been getting some really off readings since loading iOS12. Hopefully, it will settle back down again.

I usually charge my S2 while watching TV in the evenings.

ETR: I don't always use the alarm, I am retired!

I wear my series 4 for two days and then stick it on the charger before I go to bed. I like to read for an hours before sleep so by the time I’m ready for sleep my watch is charged and I put it on again. I use the inbuilt sleep function in the alarm app. Works pretty well.

I have a FitBit Alta that I was wearing at the same time as my Series 2 (1 on each wrist). I upgraded to the Series 4, and once that arrived, I retired my FitBit Alta. I wear my Series 4 during the day, while the Series 2 is charging at home. At night, I charge the Series 4 and use my Series 2 for tracking my sleep. I have the alarm that is set on my iPhone to go off on the Series 2 to wake me up. Both the phone and watch go off at the same time with the alarm, and with the Purge tone I use there’s no way I can oversleep. I use Sleep Watch by Bodymatter to automatically track my sleep. Here are a few screenshots from today’s reading.

That's where owning two AWs comes in handy.
Agree. I bought two series 4. I have A-Fib and my only hope of ever getting off the blood thinner (Eliquis) is to show the cardiologist a solid year of no off the chart readings. My maximum heart rate should be 152 for a 68 year old male. Up until the beta blocker kicked in I've had readings as high as 191 at rest.

SleepWatch does... I have only have issues maybe once every 2 weeks where I know it was completely off...(falling asleep at 3am when I know it was closer to midnight).
