Hi,

As I suspect it's probably very simple, it's driving me spare but I can't find the darn(!) setting which is causing my dock to display in the wrong place. I'm also unsure why it changed (probably user error!).

I use a Mac Air, and sometimes use an external monitor. Nowadays, the dock is always moving to my external monitor (where I'm often using an app in full screen mode).

Please, how do I restore the dock permanently to the Mac Air and never show the dock on the external monitor?

Thanks!

I'm not connected to an external at the moment to make a full step by step walkthrough, but here are some places to look.

Apple Menu -> System Settings/Preferences -> Displays

You should see a panel that allows you to rearrange the displays. I believe you will have an option in the Displays preferences to choose which is the primary display or possibly drag the dock in the arrangement pane from one display to the other.

Another tip: In Desktop and Doc in System Settings, under the Mission Control area, you can choose Displays have separate Spaces. I believe this allows the Dock to appear on both displays and will allow you to switch spaces on each display individually as well as opposed to both at once.

Hope this helps.

When the dock is at the bottom of your display, it should appear on whichever screen has the menu bar. Since the menu bar follows you from display to display as you work, so does the dock. I don't think you can change that behavior.

To move the Dock, put your mouse pointer at the bottom of the display where you want the dock, and move the mouse down.

It’s rather irritating that it’s so simple to inadvertently move it to a different display… been like that for years, though. The only way I know to freeze the dock location on side-by-side displays is to move the dock to left or right edge.
