Again, there is no point to the dock since being able to move the icons around. With that said, they need to get rid of the dock.

Dear Almighty Steve Jobs! Who cares? If you are so upset with it, go here and get what ever freaking dock you want! If Apple gives you an apple, people are stupid and ask if they can have a green apple instead of a read apple. Jeez people, Arn should just rename MacRumors to "Come Whine About Apple Here.com".:apple:

How did you add those shortcuts?

Once you've bought the $20 upgrade, and installed it successfully, simply goto Safari, type your favorite site in, hit the + button at the bottom of Safari, and Hit 'Add to home screen'. Safari will create an icon to the home screen which acts a a shortcut for that page. Safari will also remember the section or sections of that page you were viewing.

Just wanted to mention that the dock does still serve a purpose, in that it remains constant throughout all of your home screens. So as you are scrolling through them, you always have access to the items in the dock wherever you are. I believe you can have up to nine home screens, or so I've heard anyway(could be completely incorrect).

Yea, the old dock was much nicer. Even though the new one isnt THAT bad, I still prefer the more futuristic reflective look. Also, on another note, people are complaining about all of this and how the update is terrible. It may be nothing special, but in about 2 weeks we are going to be showered with applications from very very creative developers! Sure, they might charge for some of them, but there will probably be a bunch that are worth it! Cant wait for the SDK in February!

Hi

They changed the dock because the old one was supposed to reflect the icons! Now that we can move the icons, the springboard would need to reset every time we moved the dock icons!!!! Apple could have added in some other features that allow it to display a reflection right away, but to have that constantly running would drain the Touch's lousy battery before you could say 'cool dock' :):):)

Good point.

I think from a software development/maintenance perspective it makes perfect sense. Why have two slightly different versions of the same software when you can have a single version and just turn on and off certain pieces of functionality depending on the device? Really it's going to be a good thing, we'll start seeing the same features show up on the Touch the moment they're available for the iPhone (hopefully).

Now this explanation makes the most sense of them all. This one, and the fact that once your home screen is full, it'd be hard to distinguish what's in the dock and what's on the screen. I personally like the new dock style. The old one was cool too, but the new one isn't so bad. But this new update really has me fiending for a 2nd gen iPhone!! (3G, video recording capabilities, etc.)

But again the dock is now pointless since we can move the home screen icons around.

It took over 2 years but finally the old 3D style iPod Touch dock is now back, for the iPhone with OS 4! I guess Apple was listening.
