Yeah no surprise but I'm not seeing a significant (any?) difference.

Interestingly, according to the poll, 45% of people report that the update both fixes and doesn't fix the issue. ;)

lol oops i buggered the poll up. Just shows the amount of immature people on these boards though.

i think some of us would appreciate real responses, try calling people in areas where you dropped calls previously, try speedtest results, internet etc.

I think some have a hard time understanding the difference between hardware and software, that is the only thing that can explain this thread. OF COURSE the software update did not fix the hardware flaw, I don't understand how this is debatable...

I'm updating my iPhone 4 right now, maybe Jobs has a included a magic packet that will magically restructure the phone ;)

no for me...did not expect it to...

but now its even worse....cant even touch the phone without it dropping.

geez apple cant wait to hear this tomorrow...

i have a 32gb pick up tomorrow also...im not doing 4.0.1 to it..

Made no difference, other than the bigger (and less) bars. Still got the death grip :-(

Less Bars

WTF! I now have less bars and now the bars go lower with a bumper and way lower without the bumper Way to go :apple:!!!:mad::mad:

What a ***** crock of poop!

Because they changed how the bars are represented in software. You have the same signal power it is just that 5 bars previously covered ~40% of the signal range.

With the new update you are actually getting a more accurate visible representation if your signal level. If you choose to not update because you get more bars without the update...you will just be kidding yourself.

Edit: Seriously, people did you read what this update and really expect it to fix a hardware design issue? Your signal is not worse than before the update...bars are just an arbitrary way to interpret signal strength. If I patched the iPhone to display 5 bars for 100% power to 10% power it would look like you had full power all the time but wouldn't make your calls any better.

Yes or no.

It's not going to "Fix" any signal issues. All it's going to do is show you an accurate representation of your signal strength. Their current implementation in 4.0 gives you a false reading (in a good way). Basically showing you 5 bars when you really only had 2. Now....It's going to show you how crappy your AT&T signal strength really is rather then lie to you and tell you you're having great reception.

Son do you work for Apple? What kind of crappy answer is that...so I guess it's At&t's fault now and not Apple. Jobs better fix this tomorrow with an acceptable solution or things will get really ugly

You guys are going to make my head explode. I feel like the sales guy in the iphone4 vs htc evo video...

The phone just plain has more attenuation than most phones because of the antenna design. In the previous iOS version you were getting crappy signal but showing good bars. In the new iOS version you are getting the same crappy signal it is just the bars are represented accurately.

It is going to take more than a software update to fix this issue so hope for that tomorrow.

With this update, Apple now uses AT&T's own formula for displaying signal strength. That's ALL it does. We'll see tomorrow what their solution is for the actual reception issues.

"Death Grip" will drop down to 1 bar but will not drop a call.

Yep mine did the same. Started at 3 bars and dropped down to 1 after a few secs but did not drop below that or drop service at all during my 10 minute test call. (To be honest though when I first got the phone I did test the death grip and all my bars did disappear but I actually didn't try calling anyone to see if it dropped the call or not).

One thing I also noticed during my test today is that the phone got really really hot. As I have used a case since day 1 I don't know if that is normal or not?

lol....baba boey! baba boey!! BABA BOEY!!!!

4.0.1 actually made me start having the issue. Could never replicate the issue before this update, now BAM, 20 minutes after updating and I've been on searching for the fourth time.

While you are absolutely on point with your post....the sad fact (as evidenced by the idiocy of most responses on the topic) is most customers don't get it.

And while nothing has changed, other than a more accurate representation of the real signal strength, Apple has conveniently set things up to shift the blame to AT&T. And they are an easy mark, as their network has a poor reputation.

But the core issue of the antenna not obtaining/holding as strong a signal other phones (including other iPhones) is a hardware issue that can never be fixed through iTunes.

I would imagine the prolixity sensor issue is in the same boat.

Here is my iPhone 4 on 4.0 with the "death grip" (home screen and speed test)

@treyjustice

It was a display tweak for the bars. It was not intended to change any "death grip" signal loss / speed test.

yeah i understand that. But supposedly it was supposed to more accurately display how many bars we were "really" supposed to have. Just wanted to show it didn't change anything on mine so I "really" must have no bars! lol
