Does airplay work on iPhone 3G?

If I install iOS 4.2GM on my iPhone 3G will I be able to use the airplay functionality with my new apple TV?

It seems like airplay is something that may run in the background, which obviously the 3G is not able to do.

Why not just wait until Apple releases iPhone OS 4.2 before updating?

Mostly because I want it now.

Well..I jumped in and installed 4.2GM on my 3G and NO AIRPLAY. This is very dissappointing.
