Other similar areas of concern would be theatres, cinemas, etc, etc - when I turn my iPhone off in those places I know it will stay off, not turn itself back on and annoy people sitting next to me
get a clue. If your battery is in your nokia, it isn't off. As a matter of fact, your visible on the network if your battery is in, no matter what "state" you think your phone is in. iPhone is the only GSM phone I'm aware of that can truly power down with the battery installed.
Agreed. What's being asked for in this thread sounds like a horrible idea.
Turning off the phone right before a movie or a meeting would no longer be enough. I'd have to hunt through my calendar and my clock to make sure no alarms are set before EVERY meeting or movie I go to? Yikes!
This is exactly why there is a 'sleep' and an 'off' mode. They both exist for a reason.
How so?![]()
Because the iPhone is the first phone I've ever had that doesn't have this function. I am assuming of course that the iPhone isn't his or her first phone either. If it is, I am incorrect, but if - as I suspect - they have ever owned a Nokia, Motorola, Blackberry or Samsung phone, they have had the ability to set an alarm and it work even when the phone is off.

I'm with Jamie on this one. Whilst it isn't the end of the world, I would like to turn the phone off (so I don't get woken by texts or emails coming in and to save battery life) and still be woken by the alarm.
Most of the phones I have had since 1995 have been able to do this.
Also guys, please keep the vitriol down. This should a place to share ideas and views, not to have a go at each other.
You've misunderstood. Calendar alerts are one thing, and agreed, it would be annoying if they fired your phone up when you were in the cinema, but an alarm that is set (within the clock function as opposed to on the calendar) is supposed to be able to be used as an alarm to wake you up, in which case you are unlikely to be in a cinema.

Since the iPhone doesn't have a removable battery, it needs to have an off mode thats physically off. These other phones that let you use the alarm even when the phone is off, obviously the phone is not physically off, and its still using a small amount of power.
If you want your iPhones alarm to sound but not receive calls, wont putting it in airplane be the same thing?
...Full disclosure - The alarm app could use some redesign. Surprised there aren't some apps for this. I once saw a mock up of an iPhone alarm that would require you to do a quick puzzle to get it to turn off.
so if I have my iphone in flight mode the alarm will still go off? i need to have my ph in some sort of off mode otherwise my emails keep me awake all night........help!!!!
Your "mobiles" never actually turned off. iPhone has a sleep and an actual power down. If your alarm works, then it is not fully powered down. Why the heck does anyone want to power off the phone fully? If you have an alarm set, but don't want to recieve calls, then put it in airplane mode.
Seems to me that some people just want what they understand as the norm instead of a more varient alternative i.e. this phone can sleep AND fully power down without removing the battery.
