What are people's thoughts on its continuing omission from the iPad? I mean initially the talk was that intelligent voice control would be the new vogue for interfaces. Does the fact that it's still only a 4S feature imply that apple feels it only makes sense on a very limited niche of devices? or is it actually a matter of it not having caught on like they hoped and they might actually be abandoning long term development?

I use Seri a lot more now than when I first got the 4S. For the most part Siri works well for me.

I doubt they would abandon long term development, I think they expected this reaction. Once siri is improved and refined it will really be a great way to communicate with your phone. It already is now, but it's a bit choppy at times.

Apple knows Siri isn't perfect, but they acknowledge that it's in beta. It can't do everything for everyone, but for some people, it has no value. The functionality just is not as vast as it could be. I don't think Apple is willing to put a beta product in all of their major devices (computers, tablets), when they have yet to fully integrate its use into the iPhone. They can always provide Siri to new iPads via iOS updates anyway.

Don't hate siri, but it was a factor in me not getting a 4S. And really, how long is it going to be in beta?

Siri's beta status seems to be Apple's way of saying "we know it ain't great, but here it is anyway". "..and by the way, it's a major feature of the 4S".

I like Siri. There is a lot negatives towards it but it wasn never going to be perfect. Unless we all sound the same its impossible to predict how well it was going to do.

It works great for me and sometime I think there is no way it understood my garble it comes up trumps.

It would work flawlessly with Mary Poppins :D

For me it is only about 50% to 60% reliable. And I am not referring to accuracy. It seems that there are frequency's of the purple swirl with nothing happening or I hear "I'm sorry but something has gone wrong, could you try that again"

just to clarify, i'm speaking as a person who has a 4S, and siri actually works quite well for me as far as the speed and accuracy of processing requests. imo, the biggest issue is the limited amount of functions it can perform. i'm partially constrained by living outside the US and having no location search functionality. but from what i've heard about jailbreak tweaks, seems like there are lots of possibilities that apple has yet to explore.

i can see the argument of "lets not put it on anything else till we get it out of beta," but the flip side is that not aggressively getting it out on all new devices relegates it to more of a hobby status, where they don't have as much accountability or urgency as if it was a core feature of iOS moving forward.

i guess only time will tell, but its starting to feel like siri was a one-off experiment. for example, just think of how it would look if apple released a new mac without thunderbolt at this point. its also a technology in its infancy without a lot of utility yet, but the only way it *will* gain traction is if they get it out into enough users' hands. i guess in siri's case its at least encouraging that they're still adding languages.

Siri works well for what I use it for. Hands free calls/texts, settings reminders and asking some wolfram alpha questions. All I use it for but it does all of that very well, and much quicker (reminders) than I can by hand.

I use Siri to set reminders.. Both "Remind me to.." (specific date/time) and "Remember to.." (no specific date/time) reminders. (This is my biggest and almost the only thing I use it for)

Tried it for finding places that are nearby when driving, but really misses what I'm saying. Then I just start cursing at it and get mad

I'm hoping Apple eventually allows Siri to turn on/off WIFI, bluetooth, etc. I would use it for that.

Oh yeah I did use it for determining how many ounces are in 1.5 quarts just the other day at the grocery store. Worked well I must say.

I actually use Siri for iMessage. I'm not big on texting, but recently have had the need to. I'm not quick with typing so Siri helps me a lot with text dictation. She does make some errors and I do need to edit, but no big deal.

If I talk slow enough, Siri get's it right about 90% of the time.

I have not had any problems using it. I tell her to call someone, she does. I tell her how much I hate her and she asks me why I have to be like that. She puts me in my place sometimes. Sometimes I think she hates the questions I ask.

I dont understand everyone bemoaning the beta status. A service of this magnitude has to run a public beta, or you'd all be whining when it releases in full. Siri is where its all headed. With OS X and iOS slowly merging, as well as increasing airplay functionality, its only a matter of time before I'm Siri controlling my entire ecosystem.

Oh definitely, I can totally understand this point of view, too. There's certainly two sides of the coin to how people view Siri's exclusivity to the iPhone. I think Apple just wants to expand its functionality before going to widely used. Perhaps there's some iPad-specific functions it wanted to roll out all at once? Maybe they're saving it for iOS 6.

Either way, for me, I use Siri pretty often, especially when I'm in a rush. I do a lot of walking around school, town, etc. I'm a big public transit commuter with a busy schedule (except for right when I get to the office lol), so I appreciate being able use voice dictation instead of manually input as I walk around. I do a fair amount of texting, text-reading and calling through Siri.

And aside from app-specific functionality, I wish you could use Siri to play music when the iPhone is plugged into an accessory (i.e. speaker dock or car stereo's USB).
