I am perfectly happy with the original 3.5 inch size. My phone is a phone, it's nice to do some internetish things on it but at the end of the day thats what I have computers and an iPad for.

I see coworkers huge phones and don't know how they can stand carrying them around in their pockets all day.

Ditto here.

I cannot wait for the larger 5.5 inch display. I cannot read on the tiny screen now and I drool over my friends Samsung phones. Its about time that Apple catches up with the rest of the world.:D

----------

The picture you show is nowhere near a proposed 5.5 inch screen. You make it and yourself look ridiculous.

Eat while surfing the web
Push a stroller while glancing at an email
Hold my child's hand while replying to a text

Doesn't really seem that difficult to imagine different scenarios where one handed use is preferred.

So why is it so important to people? Will it make the viewing experience THAT much better?

Great way to increase the risk of dropping my phone.

Having said all that, I'm looking forward to the iphone 6, but keep in mind that you want a feature that might come at the expense of another feature. Just because it's the feature you like doesn't make you right.

1. The first one seems practical, the other two? No. Ever seen the "Don't text and walk" commercials. You could learn some things from those.

2. You actually see more content, so yes it makes the viewing experience better as a matter of fact.

3. If you don't want to do the shimmy then stick to stretching your hand.

4. I never said my way was the right way, don't get it twisted.

k, bye

I'll Weigh In

For those that like freakishly big phones, Apple could simply choose to put cellular phone capability into the iPad Mini (not that big of a jump, considering it does data over cellular already). If you pair it with a bluetooth headset, so that you're not holding that plank up to your ear, it could work. For the rest of us, I think 4.7 is the max...one handed use is mandatory, and anything larger makes it nearly impossible to accomplish routine tasks with one hand.

1. Maybe people need to learn to be more coordinated? If you can run and dribble a basketball you can text while walking.

2.But do you see THAT much more content? Your point was that 0.7 inches doesn't make much of a difference in being able to operate the phone one handed. Surely it doesn't make that much of a difference as far as viewing content either.

Also keep on mind that this isn't like going from a 4S to a 5. They'll have to make the phone a little wider this time.

3. But you're still having to do something that is uncomfortable or at the least unnatural. Right now nearly everyone can operate an iphone 5 one handed without changing his/her grip. Will a 4.7 in display change that? I don't know. Hopefully not but it's a legit concern.

4. It sounded to me like you were blowing off the concerns if people who enjoy using a phone with one hand just because you prefer a bigger screen.

I wasn't blowing off anything or anybody's concerns. I don't care, really, as what ever iphone comes out next, I'll be getting because my iPhone 4 is crap.

I was merely stating what I've heard from other threads like this.

Sorry if I came with an attitude or something, but I am just expressing my opinion on why people want/do not want bigger screens, just like you.

I don't care.

i'd be fine with the current size. i think they should just redesign the back to be more rounded, and bump up the specs. for me, 4.0 is almost perfect. 4.2 or 4.3 would be perfect though.

You don't need a smartphone, so why buy an expensive one?

I don't care about the display either way. I want a smaller phone. A smaller iPhone 4 sized phone would be ideal.

You don't need a smartphone either.

Why wouldn't they need a smartphone? Because they prefer a smaller screen size? I prefer 4 inches, but 3.5 is still a great size.

I like the size of the 5c. If the size keeps expanding outward, by the time I am eligible for an upgrade, I may end up keeping my current phone and just change the two year plan contract a bit.

Gotta hand it to Apple. They did a great job brainwashing some folks into thinking anything bigger than 3.5-4" is just way too big.

Couldn't be possible that some people just don't like larger screened phones? Nah. Who am I kidding... your brain might explode trying to comprehend that people may just have different opinions than your own.

Maybe it will be in 3 size categories eventually:

iPhone 6S, S = small 4" screen

iPhone 6R, R = regular size (the 4.7" becoming the standard median size in the future)

iPhone 6P, P = phablet sized 5.5" screen

Not so sure about that. I think they will just keep the 5 in some form. The big question will be if the smaller screen unit will have any of the 6 updates. That may not happen so there will be a push for you to update to the 6.

IMO, a bigger screen is welcome.

I believe that people have 2 'worries': 1) form factor and 2) one handed use (how ridiculous)

Form factor: how big the device is with everything included. People on this site are talking about not being able to fit a 4.7" iPhone in their pocket....are you serious? A 4.7" screen, we're not talking about an iPad mini form factor increase...I mean, come on! The device will be bigger, yes, but not to the point where it'll stop fitting in your pocket and end your whole life (that's how dramatic people on here are)

One handed use: a .7" jump is not THAT much. Think of the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5 screen and add a little more. I don't understand why people NEED to use their device one handed. It leaves me to wonder what they're doing with the other hand that is SOO important that they NEED one handed usability or it's a deal breaker. Practice your hand shimmy to shuffle the phone around. I've sure mastered it but I can comfortably use my iPhone 4 (3.5") and iPod touch 5G (4") with 2 hands.

People talk about not wanting it, but I'm sure that one of them is going to be ordering the phone or standing in line at launch day, that's written in stone.

Be more open to changes on the phone. Apple needs to change as the needs of people and the market change. If it's a deal breaker, get yourself an iPhone 5S and hang on to it, it's future proof for a few more years.

A very common use case for me is when I am holding something in one hand, and want to use my phone in the other. It can be groceries, documents, packed lunch, anything. I am currently very comfortable with manipulating my iPhone 5s one handed.

Reach into my pants pocket, hand takes out iPhone. During this time, my thumb is already unlocking my 5s via Touch ID so that by the time the phone is raised to my eyes, it is already at the home screen. Launch app, swipe around with thumb, swipe from edge to go back to previous page. It makes checking email or reading news apps while walking quite convenient, or even crafting quick replies via Siri. I can even take landscape photos one-handed.

The thing is, I am sure I am love a larger screen for when I am sitting down and viewing my phone, but I am not sure the larger form factor will be as ideal for portability. I switched from an ipad3 to a retina iPad mini earlier this year. While I love the improved portability, the smaller screen just doesn't feel as suitable for tasks like browsing and reading pdfs. Typing on the smaller keyboard also feels awkward.

It's a package deal. We will all lose some and win some.

Sure Apple should adapt to (some) changes in demand, but there is no need to ridicule people with different opinions. I for one am very skeptical about going bigger. I hope 4.7 isn't too big for me, but as I am someone who uses his phone with one hand more often than not, it might be.

What could be so important that I don't have two free hands? When I'm cycling, running or skating for one. Also I'd like to use my phone whilst looking something up on my pc, or even just taking a sip of my drink.

I think they will keep the 5s around and it's still a great device. I welcome the larger size because a stretched 4" screen just doesn't cut it anymore for me

It depends. If rumors were confirming a 4" screen for the iPhone 6, everybody would be yelling how perfect a 4" screen is.

However, rumors are stating a bigger size, so most will naturally follow. It's important to justify one's investment with posts on a web forum, it seems.

4.5 to 5 inch is really the sweet spot. Still a phone and mostly usable with one hand. I base this on my Nexus 5

I would pay $100 more for the smaller screen

Everything I read talks about paying $100 more to have your phone turn into an iPad mini. Honestly, if you want a bigger display, just use an iPad and a text/call app. I firmly agree with the idea of keeping the phones the same size. I have a 5S and I like it a lot and my wife has a 4S which I believe i like (size only) even better. I guess we are in the unfortunate minority, but I would be happy to pay the extra $100 to keep my phone smaller.

With the exception of a 5.5" model the iPhone will be they same price as it is currently. Apple is already pushing the boundary of pricing to stay competitive for the hardware you are actually purchasing. User experience only goes so far with the competition closing in and to many already caught up and surpassed.

I don't think adding fractions of an inch to overall dimensions will negatively effect too many once they get it in their hands. Some won't like it but Apple loses either way, some want bigger some don't. So like years prior they will still offer the previous years 4" model. Your 5S will continue to work flawlessly.

I don't think saying to get and use an iPad if you want a bigger screen is a very valid argument when it comes to mobile devices.

Unless there is someone out there that thinks carrying a 4" iPhone AND a 8" or 9.7" iPad is easier then just a 4.7" iPhone.

As far as pocket size. I find that to be quite the stretch. Screen size is increasing and bezel size decrease albeit not proportionately with more rounded ergos. But let's assume overall device size increased .6", without doing the math that's going to be less then 1/2" sides and top (worst case). If that won't fit into your current pockets it won't matter because that means you can't fit your hand in to get your current iPhone out to switch over to a new phone.

Also keep in mind this is still a rumored product from Apple. They are good at what they do, have faith.

Plus someone could always keep there current iPhone or switch to a competing device. That beats stomping around like a child having a temper tantrum.
