More and more often

I guess that I'd be closest to hating my Mac.

G4 Dual GHz MDD - windtunnel. It sits noisily under my desk, probably vacuuming up dust bunnies. It all started when I took it out of the box and started it up: the first thing that happened was it kernel panicked. Twice. Welcome to Macintosh.

After settling the bugs out, I started to like it. Until I realized that Core Audio took away something that I'd come to rely on: 16 channel recording...I'd have to boot into OS 9 to do that. Fun, fun. On projects that require less than 9 tracks, I do fine in OS X, except that there's some things that I could do before that I can't do in X: Audio freaks out if I'm not playing something through channel 1/2...go figure. (This could be a driver problem though and not related to Mac or the OS).

I stuffed 4 hard drives into my machine, after a week, one of them would constantly overheat and I had to pull it out and purchase a FW case. In switching the drive over, there was some kind of freak thing where my finder suddenly froze up, I had no choice but to reboot....doing that killed 105 GB of video on my FW drive.

My DVD-ROM drive burned up before my warranty expired, but I didn't get to call until about a week after. After spending $2500 on a machine, Apple wouldn't replace a $50 drive because it was a couple of days out of warranty. (This was my fault, though).

My ATI video card would flip out after my machine went to sleep. Apple wouldn't replace it, I had to send it to ATI before I could get it replaced (that's being without a video card for 15 days!)

I have two different DV cams: a Canon and a Sony. The Sony works fine everytime. The Canon will work, but audio doesn't sync up (I've spent MANY MANY hours debugging this). I have lots of problems using the Canon...it corrupts the firewire buss and there's no way to reset it except for a reboot (that I know of). The Canon seems to gum up the entire works, I cannot use any other FW gear while that's in use....it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I need to get work done, so I'll do it.

Firewire fun: I have a lot of FW gear. To put it in a nutshell: Hotswappable my butt! Almost every time I need to use a piece of FW gear, I need to restart. Sometimes I get lucky and will have an uptime of 20 days or more. I'm working on the magic sequence of making everything work together, so far, powering down, turning all FW gear on and powering up seems to work (except for the Canon DV cam). I'm hoping that it's just the DV cam mucking up the works....but still, it shouldn't be doing that; Apple supports using Canon cams.

I don't know what Apple's deal is, but there must be some difficult issues with Firewire. I can't stand it when my machine goes to sleep while my iPod is plugged in => The message "Do Not Connect" won't go away...if I was a true idiot, I'd never be able to use my iPod, but dammit, it's going to get disconnected/rebooted one way or another!

Lastly, with installing Panther, I've never had to endure so many spinning pizzas of death....mostly due to disk access issues.

Call me an idiot if you must, I'm not doing anything that I shouldn't be doing with my machine except for pushing it to its limits. I've owned an Apple for the last 12 years, and this machine has, by far, given me the most fits. I've worked with PC's and I know enough to hate them more. I'd jump ship to Linux in a heartbeat if they had good apps like the ones I'm using now, but I don't see that happening for a good number of years. I just can't wait to get rid of this G4 and start over with something with a little less audible prescence.

Don't get me wrong, there's things I like about my Mac: I can surf the web with no problems and Mail works just fine. But if that's all I did, I'd still be using my G4 450.

I'm not sure if this counts but I absolutely HATED my Color StyleWriter Pro, it always decided to stop working when you absolutely needed it. Now I think that technically since it was license from Canon it wasn't an Apple product, but I still hold Apple responsible for the nightmares that one caused.

Come to think of it the LC 575 that I had when I had the StyleWriter wasn't that great either. It was a pain to lug around, the sound quality was awful and the damn thing loved to crash.

I had an amazing Quadra 660AV and a few PC laptops after that. I absolutely hated all the laptops, they were invariably heavy, loud, with tiny screens and very easily breakable. My first Mac laptop was a Pismo G3 and I absolutely fell in love with it. Great machine, huge screen (for the time), fast and stable. However, it had to go back to Apple for repairs LOTS of times, the power port in the back came loose several times and needed to be resoldered, once the hard drive failed, another time the logic board failed, finally, after 4 years the screen started to get this nasty flickering problem so I broke down and got myself a TiBook. I've only had the TiBook for a few months but I absolutely love it.

I used to hate the loud noise my mirrored door G4 made. It still makes a hella lot of noise but I drown it out with my 4.4 multimedia setup.

Fortunately my PowerBook generally stays so cool to the touch that I never have to worry about it, but if it did catch on fire I'd probably find a way to get Apple to send me the first PowerBook G5 available...after I have my smores. :D

Can I change my opinion to something else: I love my Mac, I hate Apple.

Yesterday, my Finder wouldn't find, even after restarts. I had to reboot to get it to work again.

I'm spending more hours dealing with my Canon DV losing audio sync. Here's what I found: I captured 40 minutes in OS 9.2.2. It all sync'd perfectly. I rebooted in OS X (Panther) and the audio sync in the same file is all messed up. What's the difference? Operating system and quicktime. My Mac hasn't changed, only Apple has changed the software. I'm hating Apple. I was doing a 'video present' for my family....now it's ruined my holiday.

OK, so my opinion is changed: I Love My Mac. I Hate Apple.
