Do you have proof to the contrary?

You're joking or just trolling? Maybe you're trying to follow into thespaz footsteps and start drama and get yourself banned also.
You think you can go and request for your replacement iphone to come with certain firmware build?
Its whatever refurb they send you, its just luck and he wont have any say in what firmware it has preinstalled obviously.

at least there's a new jailbreak for 3.1.3.

I have best buys protection plan. It's not insurance it's a protection plan, a relacement plan. I was told it's a rapid exchange, a refurb replacement in 3 days when I bought the plan. I wasn't told I would get one on the spot.

But since best buys sells refurb iPhones why can't they exchange it on the spot with a refurb one they have in stock?

Marc

Yes, at least there is a JB for the latest 3.1.3 but if you wanted an unlock also and your refurb device came with 3.1.3 preinstalled you would be out of luck.
But as long as you dont rely on a software unlocked iphone for Tmobile for example you'd be fine JB it.
Im not sure on Bestbuys exchange and refurb policy. You'd have to ask them and get more details on how that works.
I know with Apple they exchange them on the spot.

Apple protection offers exchange on the spot for cracked screen as an example?

Didn't know Apple protection covers cracked screen or water damage?

No, it wont cover any type of accidental damage at all.
But I was just stating how they do their refurb exchanges if theres any manufacturer defects. They do it on the spot without shipping yours out or making you wait for one to arrive thru the mail.
Not sure on bestbuys exchange policy, give them a call tommorow for details.

I did ask and I think the person who asked in this thread was either misinformed or didn't understand.

It covers everything except theft.

It's pretty much unconditional.

It's not on the spot. Takes 3 days and they give you a refurb iPhone. I bought a refurb so it doesn't matter.

Marc

It's not a warranty, it's insurance.
There is a huge difference.

When I signed up for it, I was promised a new one when my current iPhone got damaged.

you are getting a new one.. you won't know the difference.. the only differnece is the box it comes in... it even has new headphones..

Not to be rude or anything, but did you read the original post at all?

No, honestly I didn't until after I posted which is why I added on an edit at the end (which you quoted so you saw my post after it got edited).

And yeah, I'm not that helpful cause I have no faith in Best Buy. Good luck with that cause in my experience they'll do anything to avoid actually having to honor any warranty/guarentee after you already gave them the money.

Plus, it is of somewhat help cause fi you have State Farm, they're a lot cheaper for insurance than Best Buy (as I said, less than half the price you are paying if you do the math) so once this is said and done I'd investigate whoever you have insurance through (for your car or house) and see if htey offer something similar and drop Best Buy if you can.

They can't be handing out new 3 brand new iphone every day (average). This is the only option and a lot better then most places warranties where they send it out to get it fixed, this method you get a new phone within 3-7 days and a loaner phone to use during that time period. If you ask me its pretty fair.... also I don't know if you know apples refurb quality buts it is as good as new. I have bought all my laptops and phones refurb and im pretty sure anyone else on these forums will back me up on apples refurb quality.

Hrmph.

State Farm is charging me 50 dollars a *year* to insure my iphone. A lot cheaper than your 15 dollars a month (15*12=180 a year). And they'll just give me the replacement value (They called the AT&T store to make sure what I'd end up pyaing if I had to buy a replacement so they know how much they were insuring me for) and I go buy my own iphone.

Sounds a lot better than what Best Buy is offering.

Of course not all insurance companies will offer this. But if some one has insurance through some one, it sure doesn't hurt to ask cause it seems a real insurance company has better insurance.

Oh, and State Farm covers theft and loss ;). (To be fair, State Farm keeps its relations with its customers and tend to only insure low risk people. Where as Best Buy doesn't get to pick and choose who buys their warranties so they do have to have some tighter rules to protect from scammers).

Oh, and it doesn't surprise me OP was told that it was insurance and that he'd get a new iphone. Honestly, this is really old tactics across the board from most electronics retailers to sell their warranties/plans/whatnot. Circuit City used to do it to me all the time. The difference is they'd honor it when I bitched it was sold to me as this, not this. Best Buy put me through all sorts of crap and I realized my time isn't worth whatever I'd save buying the warranty. Of course I guess it pays to piss your customers off since BB survived and CC went away (that made me sad, CC always seemed to treat me well and I have had several incidents of good customer service there).

HOW ABOUT YOU TRY NOT TO F### BEST BUY
When I received my iPhone in December, we signed up for the $15 a month insurance that covers all accidents and physical damage outside of the phone being stolen or lost.

Does anyone know how Best Buy replaces a broken phone? Do they just give you a new iPhone in the box and you pop your SIM card in?

My iPhone was recently dropped and the screen is cracked. The digitizer wasn't damaged so the phone is still fully functional. I plan on upgrading to the 4th iteration of the iPhone in June, but I am worried I have lost most resale value of my phone.

Could I wait until June with my current iPhone, get it replaced by Best Buy, and then immediately sell it as "New, In Box" after upgrading to the new iPhone?

I'm thinking I could upgrade the broken phone to the iPhone 4 and then return the broken phone to Best Buy for a replacement.

Once replaced I could sell the new iPhone 3GS for most if not all of what I paid for the new iPhone.

Is this a sound plan? I am not quite familiar with all of the legalities. And I don't want to do anything smarmy or illegal. I just want to take the best advantage of the insurance I am paying each month.

Thanks for any help!

How About You Try Not To Screw Best Buy And Dont Drop Your Phone:)

Best Buy isn't losing money on those plans or they wouldn't offer it ;).

Trust me, BB has done the math and they stand to win a lot more by offering those plans and sucking it up when some one actually has to use it (if they can't hassle the person enough they just end up not using it) than losing.

I am pretty sure that's where a lot of BB's profits come by honestly. I know they really push their sales people to push it cause they get mostly profit from it. Trust me, those plans are way more heavily weighed in BB's favor than the consumer's.

State Farm is similar really except that they probably are more weighing that they will make a lot of money on other insurance's on me but entice me to stay with them by offering that insurance (plus since they get to do checks on me and stuff they also can rate how much a risk I am and choose to keep me or drop me. State Farm is famous for not liking high risk people. And I'm actually halfway sure if I ever actually do need to use that insurance, they won't offer it to me again).

Any insurance you buy if they are going to be successful will weigh the odds in their favor.

And anyways, he paid for the plan. Best Buy should honor what they told him they'd do. Not whine like you that he shouldn't be screwing them for dropping his phone. If they don't like it, they shouldn't offer it!

I have iPhone also on our insurance Liberty Mutual 19.00/year.

But there is a difference between insurance and a protection plan.

BB plan is better than the likes of state farm but it's pricey.

Marc

How is BB's plan better than the likes of State Farm? State Farm will just give me what the declared value of the phone is so I can just go out and buy a brand new one (or even the newest incarnation). Plus it covers theft and loss as well as drops and breaks (BB's does not).

So, please tell me, how is BB's better?

THEY ARE NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU A NEW THEY WILL SHIP IT OFF AND FIX IT.

THATS WHY THE PLANS ARE HIGH BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU TRYING TO SCEW THEM. THEY WILL NOT JUST GIVE HIM A NEW ONE THEY WILL FIX THAT ONE. ASK YOUR SELF THIS HOW COME ATT WILL NOT INSURE THEM. BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE YOU WILL BREAK THEM JUST TO GET THE NEW ONE.;)

Called BB. They have a 40% discount if you pay 2 years upfront.

Works out to be $216 for 2 years.

How is it better than the likes of state farm ?

BB covers all accidental damage. If I nick it if I bump into something it's covered. If I scratch to screen by accident for any reason it's covered. If I notice a scratch on the screen that I didn't notice before it's covered.

Let's say I decide that I'm not happy with my iPhone for whatever reason. Maybe I think the battery is not good or I don't like the little scratch that happened when I was cleaning the screen from brushing it against something, I'll just go to BB and get another one.

For $8/month it's worth it, no deductible and they send a refreshed one to the store within 3-5 days.

State farm is better as it is cheaper, and you get a *brand new* phone that you purchase yourself from the store with the money they give you. Depending on the state of your contract with AT&T, you may even be able to get it at a discounted rate ($399/$499), and would be able to keep the extra $200 (as $599/$699 is technically the value of the phone - correct me if this is fraud, I'm not sure). I'm also pretty sure it covers theft.

Does State Farm cover accidental damage like I specified?

Let's say your working on your car and you nick your phone it still works but it's a nick or a dent . With State Farm are you able to get a new one?

I also have iphone insured with Libery Mutual our homeowners because it covers theft @ 19.00/year which also covers up to $5000 of computer related stuff like our 3 laptops and desk top.

Marc

First of all QUIT POSTING IN ALL CAPS!!!!!!! Seriously, it won't make people take you any more seriously (in fact they are apt to take you a whole lot less seriously if you do that).

Secondly, read this thread again. Read what people have said the Best Buy plan entails. It covers dropping your phone. That is by their terms.

But why do I have a feeling this is going completely over your head.

Once again, as several people have pointed out, it is a plan that covers you if you drop your phone. Otherwords, by Best Buy's own terms, you pay them to give you a refurbished phone if you break yours. They agreed to that term. It is not ripping them off. What would be ripping off is if they decided to tell you they weren't going to do it. Cause you paid them to cover you if you broke the phone. Then they would be ripping you off cause they wouldn't be providing the service that you *PAID* for. What do you think you pay for when you buy one of these plans anyways? Seriously, if you think that dropping your phone by accident and having Best Buy replace it when you bought a replacement plan with them is scamming htem, what do you think you are paying for with that replacement plan? Or do you think that Best Buy needs donations?

Do you understand yet?

Honestly, I know it covers me if I drop it and break it cause I asked specifically. In fact I also asked why it was more expensive to insure than my Macbook despite my macbook being pricier and their response was cause it was small and carried everywhere it was more likely to be dropped or stolen .

Now, I don't know what they'd say if it got chipped but it still works. I'm sure if the screen was cracked they would but not sure about cosmetic damage. I wasn't worried about that and I sure as hell ain't going to pay Best Buy (even if I liked them) three times as much so that I can always have a pristine iphone (my iphone plan costs me 50 dollars a year). Especially since my experience with Best Buy and their "plans" is they will do anything to try to make it as hard as possible for you to get them to actually honor tehir end of the bargain. And honestly, I'm not worried about my iphone looking a little used. Long as the screen is still good and it works fine, I'm good.

And yes, I do get a new iphone if I drop and break it. They just give me the 'replacement value'. And I go buy another one (which would probably these days get me the 3GS which is an upgrade even on mine). I have said this, the person you are replying to has said this. It covers it being broken, stolen, or lost. The only thing I don't think it covers is if it just breaks on its own (the kind of stuff an extended warranty would cover).

Keep in mind, Liberty Mutual is not the same as State Farm so maybe they don't offer hte same thing (so you can't really say cause yours doesn't mine doesn't. As I said, I specifically asked to make sure). Also, what LM is charging you is less than half of what State Farm is charging me so it is very likely my coverage is different (more expensive cause it covers more). But I'll take State Farm's plan over Best Buy's or LM's. It's cheaper than Best Buy and covers more (including the stuff I'm most worried about, me breaking my stuff) than LM or Best Buy.

State Farm is $ 50 year with $50 deductible?

If so then if something happens in a year the cost is $100($50/premium and $50 deductible)?

With BB the cost is $108 year no deductible.

And a claim doesn't go against my home owners.

So the cost can be the same.

Marc

No deductable ;). It was designed to supplement homeowner's or renter's for particular items you really wanted to protect (and apparently they stopped requiring you have either before I found out about it and insured my computer + iphone with). And I don't have homeowners or renters with them, just car and motorcycle.

Oh, and even if there was a deductable, think of it this way. Best Buy the cost is definitely 180 (15*12 is not 108) whether you use it or not. State Farm's (if it was a 50 dollar deductable) would only be 100 dollars if you dropped the phone. Otherwise you only lose 50 dollars if you don't drop the phone.

No, Best Buy can't compete with State Farm. State Farm I think is getting most of their money from my car and using the extra stuff to keep me a customer. Plus, they can drop me if I become high risk. On the other hand, not everyone has State Farm (or can have state farm as state farm can choose to cover you or not and I'm pretty sure they only offer this plan to those who have other insurance with them) , not everyone's insurance offers such a thing (my friend's insurance outright will not cover an iphone), so not everyone has access to what I do.

Oh, and even without having State Farm insure your phone, I'd say the Best Buy plan is a rip off. Why? Cause apparently Apple will replace your phone with a refurb for 200 dollars (20 dollars more than Best Buy's plan would cost you in a year for the same thing). So you only save 20 dollars if you drop the phone (in a year, go more and it gets more expensive than just not having it). To me that's not worth risking losing 180 dollars to get nothing (after all insurance/protection plans are a gamble that are heavily weighed towards the insurance/retail store).

But if any of you do have State Farm and want to insure your iphones, I'd highly suggest talking to them (it's how I found out was some one else was talking about them covering his iphone. State Farm doesn't really advertise the service very loudly).

Final Post:
I work in Geek Squad (say whatever you want but making $13 dollars an hour as a college freshman is pretty good) and I am the one who process the iphones.

1. It is Rapid Exchange. You bring your phone in and any damage or problems with it we will send it out. (Except stolen or submerged in water.) Also you will get a loaner phone assuming they loaners in stock.
2. In about 3-7 days you will get a refurbished unit back. (Apples refurbs are as good as new. Only difference is box, you even get new accessories with it.)
3. It's $15 bucks a month which may be more expensive then your insurance company however, I would like to see an insurance company get you a new phone or the money for one within 3 days. Maybe its possible, but all I know is best buy sells tons of these any usually at least 1-3 phones are brought in a day to get sent out. Best Buy is a business and they are trying to make money.
