If you don't mind me asking, what informed your taste in music (looking at your vinyl list) - is it a proxy nostalgia of your parents era or a reaction against contemporary music?

Most of my vinyl collection was inherited from my mom/her sisters, and from there, was inherited from their dad. I've only added a few new records to it from Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Prince, Billy Joel, U2, Van Halen, and Howard Jones. I grew up listening to classic rock and have fallen in love with 80s music. My almost 1k song Spotify playlist is evident of this, where I have about 800 rock and roll songs/songs made before 2000, and only 200 modern songs. I only recently got into listening to more modern music, around 2010/2011 or so, with the previous 10 years being exclusively rock and roll thanks to that being the only thing my parents listen to. I still prefer timeless rock and roll songs to modern music that gets overplayed to the extent that its annoying to listen to, but that being said, I still do like a fair bit of modern music.

I listen to anything other than county, hard-core rap, and screamo/heavy metal. Billy Joel is absolutely my favorite artist and U2 is my favorite band, with Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Queen, and others being up there as well.

Boy, its been awhile since i've come back to this thread... so here's a machine inventory update for January 2019!

Also, I do a total monthly inventory list of everything I collect on Pastebin. This includes my computer collection, Apple device collection, video game console collection, video game collection, and Vinyl collection. Here's the link: https://pastebin.com/SqP2DWu4

God, I haven't been on this thread in a long time! I decided to load up MacRumors and check my inbox. Well, it seems your collection—in regards to size—reminds me quite a bit of my own. I have roughly 60-something Macs and HAD roughly 25 Windows PCs. In fact, by senior year of high school, I had nearly 100 computers.

When I moved to college, though, I purged the heck out of my Windows PCs, and I only have old family-owned computers left. I also decided to sell duplicate Apple hardware and so forth. As far as Windows PCs go, I think I threw-away over 10 computers. I no longer collect, so I need to get rid of the things that I don't need.

Cheers to everyone here. Some years back, I frequented the PowerPC forum—I was here daily—when, one day, I finally left PPC altogether (in around 2015 or 2016). I had been a user since 2004. :)

Well, inspired by my purchase today of a "new" 2015 Retina MacBook Pro 11,5 to phase out my 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1, I figured I may as well bump this thread for the first time in over a year with my updated inventory list. And for once, there actually is another PPC machine on it! Also, here's a link to my latest total inventory like I included on my previous post in this thread: https://pastebin.com/8RBQ3Kc9

While the growth of this list has certainly slowed over the years, its still quite impressive to me that I have all these machines in my possession. I've mostly switched my focus to Intel these days, as evident by 8 of the last 10 machines I've added being Intel Macs. Also glaringly obvious is my lack of a iMac G3, which is probably one of the few PowerPC Macs I'm still actively seeking. I don't really know many more PPC Macs that I'd want since I have so many now and acquired basically all of the machines I wanted initially, other than an iMac G3 and a Quad G5, although my addition of the most powerful G5, the liquid-cooled dual 2.7GHz, is quite nice.

EDIT: I'm now realizing that I am one more PowerPC Mac away from actually having the same amount that @PowerMac G4 MDD did in the OP for this thread, so two away :D

Yes indeed.

In fact, I've gone hunting for replacements after regretting selling some of them :)

The MBA 1,1 is one of the notable ones on that. I have a love-hate relationship with that computer. I dumped a bunch to get a good battery and SSD into the one you have now.

The one I have now has an okay-ish battery and a factory SSD. The KingSpec SSD I put in yours was actually better than the stupid expensive factory option one that's in the one I have now.

I'm not sure you believed me when I told you how terrible the MBA 1,1 was-it really is that bad. The 2,1 is quite a different story. When I told you I'd send you the one from the last batch of early MBAs I bought, I was glad that it yielded a good spec 2,1. I went hunting for the SSD that's in my current one, and that one(IIRC) fortunately came with one. As much better as the 2,1 is overall, SSDs are a pain since they only interchange with one model Xserve.

Are you an 80's kid ?

I never liked the G3 - it was slow and couldn't do much.. the G4 was a much faster processor and of course the G5 as well. I never came on board Mac during the G3 era, nor before the G series. The 68k's were worse because I felt those too were slow compared to a Pentium III.

LOL. This is like saying a slug is slow compared to a cheetah. Besides, the Pentium III was introduced in 1999, so why even compare it to 68k? The G4 is the one to compare it to.

Agreed. Couldn't get rid of mine fast enough - despite the RunCore Pro IV SSD that was in it. There's one good thing I have to say about it though: it can run Tiger (without accelerated graphics).

@bunnspecial/Gamer94/AphoticD/ProjectAlice and others. If you could keep one, and one only of your collection, which would it be? And the reason.
You show me your's, I'll show you mine.;)

My little 12” PowerBook G4 1.5GHz is probably my go to portable PowerPC, but my PowerPC workstation is the DC G5 2.3GHz. For Intel, my cMP 2008 gets plenty of power on time for file serving and general usage...

Although, if I had to give up all but one for the sake of remaining portable, I would keep my Aluminum MacBook Unibody ‘08. It’s certainly not the most capable in my collection nor the most feature rich, but it holds sentimental value. I bought it new in 2008 and it probably still gets more use each day than any other Mac.

In fact, I did exactly that in 2011. I hit the road with just one Mac, my ‘08 MB unibody. Once I landed and settled back down in 2016, I travelled to pick up my G5 and PBG4 15” from storage along with the rest of my gear and started building up a collection.

In short, I could let them all go again if I had to.

Thats a tough one... I could go in many different directions with an answer to this question, and this could easily make a thread on its own. But if I had to keep one single Mac regardless of if its PowerPC, 68k, Intel, supported, unsupported, up-to-date, etc, I'd probably choose my MacBook Pro 8,1 (Late 2011, 13in). Reason being is because it was the first Mac I had ever received and the first new computer I could call my own. That MBP opened an entire world to me and I can honestly say has led me to where I am today, kickstarting my interested in Macs, computers, and technology of all ages, then how I began to collect computers a few years later, and all the people I've met through that. It has really shaped me into who I am today thanks to those experiences and my knowledge of not only how to work on computers of various ages, but also looking at the professional business choices and decisions made by Apple and other computer/technology companies over the years to see what things worked and what didn't from a historical perspective.

If I had to choose one PowerPC Mac to keep, I'd absolutely say my original PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz, aka the one that started it all. That machine has served me well for it's several years of active use under my ownership and never failed to amaze me with its capabilities despite being over 10 years old by the time I started actively using it. Its a true testament to how amazing these machines were for their time and how apple really left PowerPC with a bang. Sure Intel overtook even the late G4s and G5s shortly after their discontinuation, but the fact that they were still able to do so much even up until a mere few years ago. While they aren't completely useless now in 2020, a lot of my daily routines (especially now in a post covid-19 world) just simply cannot be done on a PowerPC Mac anymore, which is a shame. Nevertheless, I'd still say my original G5 would probably be the one PowerPC Mac I'd have to keep above all else, including my rarer G4 Cube, iMac G4, 15 and 17in DLSDs, 1.5GHz 12in PowerBook, all of my Clamshells...

For Intel I would keep (and will keep as long as I can) the 2012 MacBook Pro as it's the last of the truly upgradeables, and for PPC my PowerBook 1.67 AI.

Cheers :)

Hugh

I only have two:

iMac G3/400 DV

iMac G4/1000 15"

I do have a 3rd and 4th PPC-based gizmos, but they aren't Macs (sorry 😊) but I'll list them here regardless:

Cisco Catalyst 2960SI (10/100M) x2

Cisco Catalyst 2950 (defunct, long gone)

That’s definitely a tough question. I actually have quite a bit more since the last time I was in this thread too. I’m not home but when I am maybe I’ll get an updated list.
If I’m keeping only one Mac in my “collection”? I’m gonna say my 15” PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz, because it’s actually very useful and near mint. Second choice would be 12” iBook G3 snow 500Mhz or 500Mhz iMac G3 (indigo) this is because the last two machines I got as a kid and have owned them for over 10 years.

if you mean one Mac at all, it’d have to be my 2009 Mac Pro (4,1 flashed to 5,1) with Dual X5680s and lots of other upgrades. It is my main computer for everything so it would have to stay. I don’t really count it as being a part of a collection anymore than the last PC I built.

It's such a shame the last 17s ever are plagued by those GPU failures.
I would call it more of a lack of cooling failure. Hopefully ARM will finally solve the lack of proper cooling that Apple has been dealing with for over a decade now. But one thing that has shown us, is that Intel CPU's are VERY resilient to high heat. The average GPU... not so much.

It's not really inadequate cooling. The GPUs in these are fundamentally defective, and even if you do things like keep the fan profiles aggressive to keep the temperatures down they will still fail sooner or later.

The 2008s were fixed when nVidia actually properly repaired the issue with the GPUs. Apple eventually started fitting LoBos with the revised GPUs installed(green dot in the RAM compartment), and if you have Dosdude fix one he fits the one that won't go bad.

The Radeons in the 2011s never got that repair, and it's not Apple's fault.

Some fair points for sure, but lack of proper cooling is certainly an Apple flaw over the last many years. If you look at wintel hardware with the same chips inside, they will always offer better cooling and temps. Apple has always known that Intel chips can get to 90c within a few seconds of heavy load if not cooled properly the whole time, yet have always kept a very subpar fan curve, and stayed thin obsessed.

The GPU failures, while not Apple's fault directly, certainly weren't helped with all that extra heat. And Apple also has a history of not choosing the best GPU for the job in many systems.
