I keep Windows gated and locked up like a wild monster in a virtual machine (vmware). ;)

I've always had windows on my imac for games, but only on one macbook for WoW basically.

For my rMBP, I'll be storing windows on a USB3 drive, along with the games. I'll probably have Diablo 3 run natively on OS X though, and probably most blizzard and steam games as well.

I saw someone mention booting Windows from a thumb drive, is that possible?

I think I read that Windows prevents this from being possible. Also, it'd be a horrible for gaming. Bootcamp is the way to go if you want to play games. Otherwise, Paralells/VMWare.

Do you game on your Retina MBP? If so what games do you play and how well do they run/how much RAM do they take up?
I do. I've played Diablo III, Skyrim, Crysis 2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution so far (the latter three in Windows). As far as RAM goes, I haven't looked during play, I'd imagine not nearly 8GB since they aren't 64-bit executables. Well, I guess Skyrim is. But yeah, I haven't had any cause to investigate RAM usage as of yet.

Do you run Windows in BootCamp or a VM? I'm genuninely interested because I just ordered my base Retina MBP with 8GB and was wondering if I should just shell out the extra money to upgrade the RAM. I'll be doing a lot of work with Photoshop/Illustrator/Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Aftereffects/Lightroom as well and I've read so much about it my head is getting dizzy haha.

I run all games in Windows booted natively (Boot Camp).

If you're doing work in After Effects, regardless of what else you do with the machine, get 16GB. AE eats up RAM like nobody's business—pretty much as much RAM as you let it have, that's how much it'll use.

How much throttling would you expect to see on 8GB? I've been doing most of my work on my university's 2010 iMac computers that have maximum RAM upgraded on them.

When I bought my first Mac, I decided not to load Windows so I would be forced to get used to OS X. A year later, I have two Macs and neither is running Windows. I've been lucky that I don't need any Windows-only apps; I know a lot of people do for work. And, for the record, I LOVE Pages. No MS Word for me!

Well, it just depends on the project. If you're not doing super involved AE work (with tons of layers and complex effects), then you'll probably be fine. I'm just thinking in terms of future-proofing when working with an app that has demonstrated itself so clearly RAM-hungry.
