Yep, ugly. The unibody chassis is great, too bad about the glass-covered screens, the mini-displayport, and the lack of firewire on the MB.

The unibody is perfection when closed-- pure sleek and streamlined design. Once opened, it's rather pedestrian: the black keyboard, the black border, and the glossy display.

The lack of firewire doesn't bother me. If I were in the market for a new MacBook Pro (17". Yay-- matte display option!), I would definitely pick it up without hesitation.

it would be better w/o those horrible chiclet keys. I liked the polycarb better, but i dont have a mb so.....yah

o, and y are all these macbook threads popping up on here? is the macbook section not getting enough traffic?

I was trying to be general about the whole line up. I stay out of the macbook threads. I have no business being in places of which I don't belong. Pro is where it's at!

I don't think the design is stellar, but it's not that bad. At least I feel it's more durable than the older design—doesn't flex.

agreed

When I first saw them I thought my old macbook pro was aesthetically far better.....but since using this thing in the flesh I have definitely been converted, thinner, prettier, better(?)

The reason I am not sure if it is better is that I am having a few more issues with this one than my last, which incidentally was a revA core duo MBP

to be honest i like the new uMB but not the uMBP, I don't care for the speaker grate between the edge and the keyboard, and i do like the prev gen MBP, i bought a whitebook in August 2008 as it was perfect for me, 2.4GHz proc and i up'd the RAM to 4GB... still for a lot less than the new MB with a 2.4 and it runs iPhoto and VirtualBox perfectly, as well as doing video encoding (at the same time, almost pegging the thermal spec of the CPU, i've gotten it up to 94*c)

and yes, i know, no 9400M and no DDR3, but I have firewire and a 2.4GHz CPU and it didn't cost me $1500

Im not the biggest fan, they tried to do a MB Air/TiBook/iPhone hybrid and it just didn't quite work right for me. I like the shell/unibody but not so much the glass, bezel, black keyboard in that order. These in addition to the jacked up prices, sacrifice of important ports and introduction a new, non-backwards compatible port is what put me off the new models.

The design works well on the iMacs/iPhones but not so much on the laptops...IMO

They look good but also cheaper than the old mbp: less connectivity, unremovable battery, no cover latch etc. In fact for three days I own a brand new 17" mbp multibody, the very very last version of the old model.

Still prefer the look of the Air. I like the all silver bezel with black keys, no glass covering on the screen.

If there was a 13" MacBook Pro released with a silver bezel like the Air (and a physical trackpad button) I'd much prefer that.

I did. in fact I still do.

The thing that made the MacBooks look exclusive and 'apple' built was the White color, IMO.
White color looks exclusive, whereas silver/black tone does not. Thats used in almost every PC laptop these days. Though yes, the UniBody looks 10 times better than any of those.

Most of my guys are PC users, and I wanted to stand out. That has happened upto a good extent considering that these are people completely unaware of existence of Macs, plethora of Linux distros available.. anything tech.
However a White MacBook would have fit better.

I do not miss FireWire. I've never owned a FireWire device. Even my 6 year old camcorder is USB, though it does not work on my MacBook (no drivers).

I was intent on buying the White MacBook, but I got a sweet deal on the Unibody, so got one. At that time, the White one wasnt updated to 9400M GFx and 2GB RAM. God knows how much I regretted not waiting!

But then, its been quite a good journey. Proud to own a Mac. ;)

Yes. I think they're ugly. I don't like the keyboard (I've used one for a few hours, and my iMac at home has a chicklet keyboard, blahh)

Oh, and that black bezel and glass.. combined with the beauty of Windows 7... Is Apple trying to push customers away?

I love the new design and now the old one looks clunky and amateurish. Who uses plastic strips to join metal corners? The only thing I prefer from the old one is the speaker grill/power button. Everything else looks awful by comparison.

After a few reservations initially, I now adore the look of the UMBP. Combined with my 24" LED, it's easily the most magnificent computing setup I've had in 30 years of computing.

I *might* have gone with a matte 15" if they were available but I'm very happy with the glossy screens. My 24" is positioned to avoid reflections and my mbp rarely leaves the house, meaning I can easily rectify the lighting. If I used it on the go, I'd probably think differently.

Chalk up another one with a perfect UMBP btw, has worked flawlessly since December, touch wood.

The only design issue I have is with the closeness of the USB ports, but that's not an issue when hooked up to the LED.

Back in october when we all finally got to see the official images of the new line of macbooks many people on this site were saying how ugly they looked and how they were going to buy one of the previous models while they still could. Has anyone changed their minds about the new look or is it still a flaw you will put up with?

I was one of the ppl who thought they were really ugly, and decided to buy a last gen refurb 2.5 GB 250 HD MBP 15" in October. I don't regret my decision, b/c the notebook I bought was $2499 a week prior, so I really lucked out by paying $1400 for it! Plus, I really really enjoy the look and feel of the Early '08 MBPs.

But I don't think the new designs are ugly anymore. In fact, I like the look of the bezel and the feel of the keys (those were my two main complaints back in October. )

I suppose that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally love the look of my unibody macbook pro

the unibody macbook beats any of the previous style macbooks white/black alot more sturdy definitely has nicer specs.

the whole displayport / firewire thing...while i have a lot of FW devices and DVI displays....i can make do with a 400-800 cable, its not that bad and while the lack of it on the macbook might be abit stingy but i get it as its a very consumer oriented notebook and werent gearing towards prosumers and powerusers.
the display port is great imo. instead of having all sorts of varying standards of ports out there hdmi, dvi, dp, vga etc...DP can do what hdmi and dvi can do and hopefully be less confusing in the overall scheme of things when it gets adapted even more.
it sure beats having a horribly extra large unnecessary dvi port on the side of one these amazingly designed systems.

the only real complaint i have is i wish there was a latching mechanism on the 17" to get the HDD and Memory out easier; undestanding the lack of it for more battery space was a definite plus..itd just be easier to pop a latch and pop in drive & memory. but overall not a bad job.
