Honestly - I think the speed is about the same. I am very good on the Apple texting and am a fast typer in general - but for the short period I didn't have my iPhone (3 months) I did have an Android phone with Swype, and I loved it. I'd like to have the option. Or at least a jailbreak app that implements that option.

Well if no one wants the feature added, whats the BIGGEST feature you want added to iPhone 5 or 4S or whatever it's called. I dont wanna make a new thread so ill just ask here.

Those who say they don't like it, are those who've never spent the six minutes it takes to watch three 2 min videos on how it works. It's the most amazingly fun, fast, and easy input method yet.

That's right, those ignorant fools simply aren't educated on why swype is the best. It can't come down to a personal preference, ever, its that they are just too stupid to understand.

i know i know you think a'm a troll but thats not he case. but i think swype is very awkward to use and if they include it it should be possible to disable it in the settings

yup, swype would be awesome on the iPhone. We can just turn it off if we dont like it...in my opinion it should please more people.

Who owns swype? If apple were to ever implement it (which they won't) it would have to be installed at the OS level.

It's actually being implemented to many Android devices as stock BUT you have a choice to disable it, use the native Android keyboard or a keyboard of your choice. This is something Apple should learn, people want choice and don't like to be spoon fed what Apple deems to be fit for their users.

I wish they would make it a paid JB app. But if you've ever read about the guy he invented SWYPE, he would never go for that.

Ha, are you kidding? Not a chance. Apple sued HTC last year for some pretty ridiculous patent infringement, such as swiping a "pre-determined path" to unlock a touch-screen device (uhh wtf else are you supposed to do??), or something like that. I don't know how that played out, but you can be damn sure that if Apple copied an Android feature like that now, it would not go over well.
I actually thought that was one if the stronger patents. Prior to the iPhone, touch screen devices struggled with how to avoid unintended activation. The most popular means at the time was physical lock switches. Apple had identified a long standing UI issue and patented an improved process.
In hindsight this solition may seem obvious, but it was a significant change at the time.

I had it with my old phone and I really didn't like it. I love the iPhone 4 keyboard a lot better. I type way faster and it's much better in my opinion.

and what old phone did you have that you failed to mention?

BTW the iPhone native keyboards biggest flaw is that it doesn't learn. Anyone that says they prefer it to other virtual keyboards simply haven't ventured to try other more intuitive keyboards. Welcome to 2007

I don't really see how it matters which phone I had? But since you care so much it was the Droid X.

Also the iPhone keyboard does learn.

If you hate the iPhone keyboard and you keep trashing that it's the same thing since 2007.. why don't you purchase an Android device and move to an Android forum? Apple doesn't like to change what's not broken, and I don't blame them. They would be stupid to.

Gesture unlocking existed on touchscreen devices by at least 2000. It was a very popular enterprise security option for a couple of years, until people noticed that you could often follow a grease/scratch trail on the screen to duplicate the "secret" gesture.

Swipe-to-unlock in a straight line, just as a way to quickly and easily enable a touch device, was first used in 2002.

Then, for five years, it was all pretty much ignored because it didn't make any sense as a security option, and the simple swipe wasn't obvious.

Apple had identified a long standing UI issue and patented an improved process. In hindsight this solition may seem obvious, but it was a significant change at the time.

Apple first threw away any idea of using a gesture for security, and instead actually showed the user the line they should follow. That was unusual, but not unheard of.

Their real invention was not only showing the unlock path, but also having a visible object follow your finger as an aid.

I've never used it but I've always been curious. I certainty wouldn't mind having the option. Having an option to turn it on/off in settings, or simply being able to download an app would be nice.

Precisely!

It's the very basis ( unfortunately ) of Steve Jobs empire. Program the masses that he knows what's best for them, take away their freedom of choice, and charge them for "the privilege".

I find Swype simply brilliant.

Those who say they don't like it, are those who've never spent the six minutes it takes to watch three 2 min videos on how it works. It's the most amazingly fun, fast, and easy input method yet.

it's amazingly fun, fast? LOL it's a ****in novelty feature and wears itself out after a while. it's much faster to type the regular way. this feature is more of "hey check this feature out on my phone, i have no friends you can try this out and be my friend"

i know how swype works, and i've used it. it's stupid.

yes, i thought it was cool and was amazed at first.

it's still faster to type than trace the words - fact

and i dont care if apple adds this feature.

edit: 1 more thing. the reason why i can see swype being successful on android is because the input keyboard isn't as great as the iPhone. i can't type as fast on android phones as i can on the iPhone.

I think this from the Swype website says it all:

"When/how can I put Swype on my iPhone/iPad?

Unfortunately, due to limitations imposed by Apple on the types of applications they will allow sold in their marketplace, we have no short-term plans to develop Swype for Apple products. If you love Swype and absolutely must have it on your Apple devices, let Apple know by sending them a friendly email! With a bit of luck and the support of our fans, hopefully we'll be able to offer Swype on the iPhone and iPad in the future!"

Exactly how long did you use swype? just wondering

anyways it might be faster for you to type using the iphone keyboard....but im sure a ton of people including the fastest typer in the world will disagree....but a ton will agree with you too

therefore an on off feature would be added to please everyone.

Adding swype would please the people who love it, and the people who dont care just wouldnt care for it (like I am towards hotspot right now)

simple as that.

How can some of you even mention the iphone keyboard in the same sentence as swype? Swype blows everything away out of the water. Honestly, the apple d!ck riding by some of you is beyond ridiculous.

Iphone is overall the best phone on the market but swype trumps all virtual keyboards.

Swype is amazing!

However, I don't know how lazy or revolutionary Apple will get with iOS 5..

Would love to see Swype on the iPhone - its one of the things (along with the notification bar) that I miss about my past Android devices.
