I've had 4 jailbroken iPhones in the house for the last 2 1/2 years and I think we'e synced our phones less than 10 times. I've only had a phone crash once and it was because I was messing around with it. I back-up before I do any modifications.

I don't really like iTunes and find no reason to use it. Everything can be done on the phone and OTA.

virtually everything =\= as everything
it's sad how much effort and time you guys must waste for something the rest of us do automatically just by plugging in a cable

Again, what time and effort am I wasting by NOT syncing!?

The only thing that I can't do any other way is:

1) Updating my iPhone (I do of course use iTunes to do this)

2) Backing up my phone (I also do this occasionally).

I download Podcasts through iTunes on the phone. I download the odd song on the iTunes Store (possibly one a month) through the phone.

How does syncing with my computer solve anything? What time am I wasting here?

I can see where syncing less often could be beneficial.

For example, my mother is purchasing an iPad soon but her computer for some reason (I am going to try and troubleshoot when I see her next) will NOT download/install iTunes. Anyways, due to what she will use the iPad for, I told her it would be no big deal to just "activate" the iPad on one of my cousin's computers with iTunes that lives near by and not to have to worry about it again.

She is agreeable to this but I told her I would work on her computer and see if I can get iTunes going (This is a well documented problem on the internet--Windows 7 64bit--so I'm going to do some of the steps suggested on MS forums).

My iPhone gets sync'd probably once a month--the iPad has been sync'd only 3 times in it's life (shortly after release).

you all seriously need to read what we are posting. if you EVER plug into iTunes, then our arguments about crippling your phone are irrelevant to you. the OP NEVER wants to plug in, not even to back up or update and only an idiot would call that not crippling.

yup, I don't understand these people

As a multi-platformist I've been totally wireless on the PC laptop side for a long time. If not for iTunes I'd be totally wireless on the OS X laptop side. That said I don't reach for a wire other than to recharge. I don't use the camera on any of my smartphones, since I'm serious about photography as a hobby and have my dedicated cameras wifi / 3G equipped.

Sorry but could someone please explain the difference between backing up your iPhone and synching??

Is it the same thing? What is achieved with each of them?

Thanks.

Backing up means to back up your data.

Syncing means synchronizing your data.

Pretty simple if you ask me.
