My girlfriend had her iPhone 4 since it launched on the first day and has yet to sync with iTunes once.

To each their own I guess, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that in case of the need to restore my iPhone. I have a lot of information that changes on a daily basis on my phone, so I sync it every couple of days.

Laziness. That's all the OP is exerting. You still plug your phone into the wall with a CORD. You say that you aren't avoiding syncing due to the "annoyance" of it, but you aren't giving any information as to other reasons why you dislike it? iTunes is a great back-up, and I do agree that a cloud based backup system would be better and more efficient, but it's not here yet, so quit bitching and plug your phone in.

you're in for a heartbreak one day when and if your phone fails...you will lose everything you purchased over the air if you don't back it up to a pc...this goes for music, apps, and video...at the very least transfer your purcahses once a week

Exactly...I don't understand exactly what he's trying to accomplish....he's basically avoiding iTunes just so he can say "look at me, im different" and frankly it's irritating.

I sync daily because it's easier to download podcasts on my Mac in iTunes than individually on the iPhone. I do wish there was wireless syncing, though. I have a ton of wires on the corner of my desk right now.

Okay it's seems to many of you guys that it's the struggle of syncing that is taking me away from doing so. It's not the case.

wow lazy and now a giant flopper. OP get off your high horse and acting like some cloud based guru, you said it yourself

"Omg guys It's too hard to plug in a USB cable, I could break a nail doing all that work"

To sync I have to get my laptop to the area where my iPhone dock is unplug the usb end of the cable and plug into my Macbook & set my iPhone in the dock.

So it's the bringing my laptop to the area to sync.

Many of you guys think I'm trying to be different or being lazy about it but I honestly don't need to sync.

- I have the Apple wall plug and iPhone dock and the USB end is connected to the Apple wall plug. I never disconnect the USB end of the plug. the cables and dock stay stationary.

- I don't have anything to sync except apps. And most apps uses the cloud.
ex: ToDo, Netflix, Reeder, Pandora, Facebook.
& some apps that does not have any progress that is saved
ex: WIKI, Radarscope, IMDB, Alarm Clock apps, Flashlight, photography apps.

- The apps take up storage on my macbook when bringing it over to iTunes

- I could always take a photo of my screen on my iPhone and send it over to evernote so if I ever break or lose my iPhone I know what apps to redownload.

The reason I am doing this is because of hearing Apple coming out with a subscription based music service so you don't have to sync with iTunes, or hopefully not to.

I just love the idea of the cloud and being able to have device not having to switch between being plugged into a wall and plugged into a laptop all the time and just have one stationary area to get charged. My laptop is never stationary.

I only sync when I left my mp3 player in my car and didn't sync the new additions to my library so I can't hear any of the new songs in my car, so i sync it to my phone instead and listen to it from the phone, otherwise...no i never sync.

my contacts are synced with google as opposed to address book and everything else I don't care about.

Sync once a week. But I gotta sync. Pandora has such horrible taste in music. And I gotta scam Pandora via a jailbreak app to get unlimited skips? Come on. I can unlimited skip my own music thanks.

things MIGHT become cloud based. But have you ever thought about people not liking that 'Google-way', of your one phone provider holding all your contact data, conversations, etc. etc.
(i mean, don't get me wrong, i don't mind, still)

and cloud syncing won't be around for a while, so just buy a freaking 2nd USB cable, Problem solved.

Yeah its clear its pointless to argue with this guy

I'm guessing a majority of the people only sync their phones every month or two. Technically you don't even need to sync it after the first time.

it's like trying to argue with a person that says he doesn't wear a seatbelt because it takes to much time and believes that relying on just the airbag is good enough

we don't sync our phones because it's pleasant we do it because it's functional, and like a seatbelt it's worth the extra safety it provides in case something were to happen. I'm sure in the future cloud syncing will be a hit, and maybe airbags will replace seatbelts too

Exactly, and the OP DOESNT WANNA BE LESS DEPENDANT ON iTUNES, HE JUST WANTS TO BE LAZY.

Look at his posts. He keeps saying that he just doesn't like the fact that he has to unplug his phone from the wall and plug it into his laptop. It's annoying. That's the same concept as searching for 10 minutes to find the remote control, when you can just push the damn power button on the TV.

I can't believe that someone is crippling their iPhone because they are just too lazy to plug it in to a computer once a month. Honestly, you don't need to sync the damn thing everytime you make a purchase. Mine gets synced once every couple weeks and i'm okay with that. But never syncing your phone because it's "annoying to plug it in" is ridiculous.

How is it crippling?

I, the OP and several other posters have pointed out that you can do virtually everything without iTunes.

I avoid using iTunes whenever I can.

It's one thing to only use iTunes when needed. Such as for updates and such, but avoiding iTunes completely is ridiculous. There's just no point to it. Maybe for someone who stores virtually nothing on their phone, there is no point to iTunes, but if you have downloaded large sums of music/movies/ringtones/games/etc. and are not backing up, there is something wrong with your head. I don't know about you, but I have a couple hundred dollars worth of content that I have downloaded OFF MY DEVICE ALONE. That includes games/music/etc. and losing all of that data simply because im too lazy to plug my phone into my computer is just ludicrous. Plain and simple.

I have already said that I only sync up around once a month, and that is nothing compared to some people that sync everyday, if not more. I just don't know what NEVER syncing accomplishes. Besides leaving your phone in a vulnerable state and with an older version of iOS.

You just described YOUR usage. The OP clearly(read previous posts) has differ usage.

Yes there is. I don't have to wait for my computer to boot up and then iTunes to start doing virtually nothing for 15 minutes.

Why!? It's just digital content. I can download Apps again for free. Apple will usually allow you to download music etc. again if you lose your device

This could happen any time. I could download an album or a movie and the phone could break - £10 down the drain instantly. Not syncing isn't the problem, it's Apple's limitations with the service.

I can't see a situation where I would have hundreds of pounds worth of content on my device that wasn't synced with a computer.

Other people that I know don't sync very often because they find the process slow and cumbersome. It's difficult syncing between different iTunes libraries and many people are simply worried about losing content they've bought or data stored by their Apps.

you obviously weren't reading my posts. you just said you wouldn't download hundreds of dollars of content without syncing, but that is exactly what the OP is describing. he NEVER wants his iPhone to sync. I wasnt talking about hundreds if dollars in content being downloaded at one time, but over time it builds up. and if you want to try and argue with apple about losing 1000 songs or 100 apps or whatever you've downloaded be my damn guest, but I'll take the easier route and spend 30 seconds syncing my recent purchases. I for one, don't see why someone who wants to be cordless and has basically stated that they are too lazy to plug their phone into the computer would want to deal with the hassle of tryingto persuade apple to givethem their paid content back. (which im sure htheir not going to just be like here's a $200 giftcard, have at it. )

virtually everything =\= as everything
it's sad how much effort and time you guys must waste for something the rest of us do automatically just by plugging in a cable
