Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll maybe just try it once or twice and see what happens. I feel guilty telling kids to be quiet since it's their home as well and don't want them to feel like they cannot enjoy their time around the house.

I was curious to see if any users to work regularly from a Starbucks etc.

Thanks again, Rob.

But this is your business. Your kids are fed because of said business. I realize you feel badly, but perhaps before going into business for self with a home office (or the obvious lack thereof) or opting to work from home for another company it may be prudent to ensure your home is conducive for work. I understand this very well, I work out of my home. In order to do this I had to prove I had a dedicated workspace and quiet. It is also a requirement that if there are children in the home they're in daycare or cared for by a in-home nanny. You're in business for yourself so there aren't rules, but if you want to really succeed, I think you need to look into an office of sorts or daycare. It would be a shame to see you cannot be a success because of your work space.

I've known more than one Brit who has successfully worked from their garden shed. If its done up nicely and is water tight (not all sheds are sheds 😉 ), you could easily spend a few quiet hours there.

No one is saying the kids have to be silent every where in the house. You are trying to make a living so your kids will continue to have a roof over their head. Expecting them to be quiet around your home office is not unreasonable.

Now that I think about this, it's probably a great idea. Unlimited access to caffeine should increase your productivity dramatically.

Can't you just go into your bathroom when you need quiet to make a phone call?😕

Kids are like cats, a closed door pisses them off. 😉

A back-yard shed, with all the wiring, and a lock on the door, sounds ideal.

You could achieve the same thing with a high-top commercial van in the driveway. 😉

Starbucks coffee is bloody horrible! Costa is far better!

Working from either hmm you must be nuts!!

Question is, do you think this is acceptable or will the manager take exception?

I can imagine a coffee shop manager somewhere taking exception if you are there on a regular basis, clearly involved in "work", but I guess it depends. If the place is full of people in conversation, I think it could be quite loud. If your wife can help, a better option might be to lock yourself in a bedroom. 🙂

I doubt that. When I was unemployed, I went to Starbucks regularly to get out of the house. Same people working there every time I went.

Please don't be the douche in the restaurant/coffee shop who has to be on the phone all the time.

That is beyond rude to other customers. Phone calls should NEVER take place inside a restaurant like that.

Nothing wrong with going to grab a coffee and sitting with your laptop and emailing/web browsing for a bit, but anything more than that is kind of ridiculous. It's a coffee shop, not a table rental store.

Additionally, if you're at a sit-down place that has actual servers, you are going to be costing your server lots of money by taking up a table for a long time. And when those servers make $2.63 an hour and rely on their tips from customers for a living, they will not be happy.

Tell that to all the college students in Boston chilling at Starbucks/Panera all day.
