Since everyone is throwing out their opinions on this matter, I don't think it should be open to high school students. I think it's nice enough of Apple to offer it to college students. As far as finding a way to get the discount without being in college, just do it online, if they don't verify it, what's the problem?! Every single time there is a debatable thread on this site, people immediately have to start throwing out insults. Not everybody has the same opinions. Be nice guys.

Of course she's the exception - your statement left no room for 'exceptions' as you chose to lump people of a solitary qualification ('did not graduate high school') into one homogenous class ('flunkies' too broke to buy a Mac).

I just have a bad habit of calling people on their wannabe-elitist crap.

Yes, I am one of those sitting at the country club sipping lemonade while a black person tends the course. How is calling flunkies poor, eltiism? Its a fact. Education gives you more money, it has been proven. A flunkie gains the least amount of education required by law, there in fact would make him the poorest. Now, of course this is looking at a trend, because I can't sit down and look at every person they used in the survey and say which one got lucky. I can tell you one guy who flunked out and made it big, but he won't need an Apple anytime soon, unless he suprises us with a switch to PowerPC.

Your hatred is generalization, not elitism. Maybe you should stop generalizing that an 11th grader who goes to public school and rides a bike to school is an elitist. At least my generalization had a whiff of truth. Yours is just assuming that I am the one typing this from the library of Harvard.

I agree: High school students don't need an education discount, as they don't need to juggle tuition, rent, other bills, etc.

If you're in Highschool and want the college discount stop going crazy. If you want the discount just sign up for a class at your local community college then drop it once you get your shipment.

I don't want really care any longer. I was merely replying to an orignal post only to get bombardments of elitism and the fact that highschool dropouts deserve computers and I don't. I bought mine. I'm in highschool. I got the discount. I'm not going to argue over a point that seems mute to me. I was merely clearifying a legal issue.

Probably more can afford it than me... I have 2 bachelor's degrees and am a teacher... teachers get paid nothing... student right out of dropping out working construction make more than me.... I'm not mad or bitter or anything ;)

Yes, but they must also work very hard PHYSICALLY for that money. It is a job no one could enjoy, unlike teaching. Also, they do not get summers off, and need to work about 260 days a year vs. ABOUT 180. I am not impressed when teachers talk about how little they earn without noting the fact that they are only working 9 months a year. Most teachers can earn an additional $10K/ year by taking up a summer job as well.

I would much rather teach for the rest of my life than work construction 'till my back gives out in my mid-30's.

And before someone jumps on me for being a teacher-hater, The above reasons are why I am actually working construction in the summers to pay for school to become a teacher myself when I graduate in two years ;)

? People here seem to be saying college students deserve the discount not highschool dropouts. Where did you get that from?

Chef, you don't seem to understand that part (most) of the problem is your use of the pejorative 'flunkie' - in itself the wannabe-elitism I referred to. (Wannabe because it aspires to learned elitism but falls rather short.)

Awesome! Then in two years you'll realize how ignorant your opinions on and about teachers really are....

I used the discount in Middle School, and I was never caught until I tried to buy something from the retail store and they wouldn't give me the discount.

While you can get the discount saying you're older or a teacher, I think it's illegal, but I don't know who will catch you. I installed a sinigle license version of Panther on several computers and it didn't do anything strange.

So, go ahead, but remember that it's illegal.

I will agree that high school students should get the discount. Sure it would give the discount to a whole lot of people, but why should Apple care about that? That means they are getting their computers out to more people as well. It would seem the whole reason they give the discount is not to reward people for getting a higher education, or anything of the sort. It would be to get students used to working on a Mac during their studying and while they are typing up papers and researching on the internet. At which point they should be hooked on that particular OS and want to continue with Apple for their work careers. Why not allow that same thing for other students?

Also, you guys should really quit with the arguing back and forth and nit picking at each other's points. Most people make generalizations in an argument. If you didn't then you would be stipulating way too much and the whole point would be lost. Such as: flunkies won't have enough for an Apple, except in the event that they find a good job, stumble accross some money, etc etc... there are way too many reasons to list. Or Education get your more money, except for when... list tons of cases when someone with no higher education still makes more money than people that do... (such as Steve Jobs, John Carmack, etc.) blah, oh well now I'm rambling... just wanted to toss out my opinion on why all students should get the discount (though everyone is technically a student as we are always learning new things :p )

I dont know how much you earn where you live, but here in philadelphia, they just renegotiated the contracts for the public school system this year. Teachers just graduating with a bachelors degree and NO experience will start at over 31K. Earning an additional 10K over the summer brings it to over $41,000/year with raises each year, and a step to a different pay scale with higher degrees. If you think 41k/year STARTING salary is not sufficient, then you are expecting FAR too much. There are people working much harder than you for much less. Stop whining and get a new job. :D

EDIT: P.S. Feel free to respond to this post on your "G4 15" PowerBook - 1.67 Ghz/1gbRAM/128vRAM/100gbHD/SD((Retail value = $2,849.00 US) " Mr. "my job doesnt pay enough".

About a year ago, the customer service rep. at apple.com told me that if your
parent is a Professor at a University (in the USA) then you can have the educational discount.

I am not sure if that rule still stands officially or if any other children / spouses of Professors or teachers are taking advantage of the discount....

I guess if you have a parent who is in academia, then they could pick it up on their name and you could reimburse them....whether or not apple allows the spouses and children to buy...but worth checking out though..... :)

10k a summer... That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.... In the 9 weeks off I have in the summer, I won't make over $1000 a week... Unless I work construction (where I would stand around with a shovel in my hand all day and "pretend to work"... see how ignorant that sounds? that's how you sound when talking about teaching.. See, I don't know about construction, so I don't talk about it like I do)

and those steps in the pay scale, those come from free school that I don't have to pay for... OH WAIT... I have to teach full time, go to school at night, and PAY for it... I get 9 weeks off, but during the school year I work 60 hrs. a week EASILY... those hours are not even made up in the summer time that I have off...

Yes... I have a $2,800 PB... But I also don't own: a DVD player, TV larger than 19", a stereo, a house, any furniture, or a lot of other things... I choose how to spend my money, and I spent it on a nice computer and sacrificed other things, and got a 2nd job...

Again, when you finally become a teacher, you'll understand... but right now, come back when you know what you're talking about....

Ugh, I really dont like to hear people complain about how little money they make.
Dealt a good hand in life or not, with enough work and by staying on the right track, almost anyone can become successful in life.
(I doubt people on these forums, people who can afford to buy a computer, are dirt poor/extremely under-privelaged.)
I think that almost everyone knows that teachers' salaries aren't the highest of jobs, but you should know that going in. It's that person's choice to become a teacher, so I really don't like it when people complain about it.

In my my original post, all I was doing was defending the idea that people who drop out of high school don't necessarily make less than those who go to college... I used myself as an example... I did not do any complaining about how much money I make, I'm quite happy... What I *did* complain about are the people who think teachers are overpaid or complain that teachers "only" work 9 months... Both my parents were teachers in small town Iowa, so believe me, I knew what I was getting into as far as salary...
